How would a black student feel in this class? Surely his or her mind would not be on the dad who was stuck in the cave?

As a math teacher, I have very rarely used slides of any type. It saddens me to see how many of my colleagues teaching other subjects are using this same tired delivery method every single day.

How do you accomplish this with dense information (like government, which the students I am teaching have little to no background knowledge)? Also, what do you do for students that are absent? I really enjoy your content and really want to learn from you about this topic.

When I was student teaching, my students would ask and I was always honest, I was like, yeah dude, I'm not 100% sure, someone ask Alexa for a jolly rancher! Or, that's a great question, I'll look that up and I'll have an answer tomorrow, if someone wants to find an answer by then too, I might have an extra jolly rancher... Wink lol. It was extremely helpful building a relationship with my students.

How frquently do you think these discussions should be with our students? The ground reality is, we have to take lesson plans, we have to take curriculumn to the class, course completion etc.

Imagine trying to manage money without knowing how much money you had. Or worse, believing that it is infinite! Trying to manage time while not grasping that we have a finite amount of it must be the same. Our desires are infinite and our time is not, we have to make hard, permanent choices with the opportunity cost of entirely different lives and futures. That's a huge weight for adults to bear, let alone children.

I searched "what makes a good curriculum" because I'm trying to learn how to use AI to help me organize my solo online learning and this was the second result. I'm not sure I got any smarter about that. But I did learn a lesson. Thanks.

I love numbers and yearned to be a high school math teacher but school officials, particularly the DOE, discouraged me as much as they could (without making it look so obvious) from chasing my dream. I also recall CUNY guidance counselors discouraging me from pursuing my academic objectives. This was all done in an effort to keep certain minorities from reaching success and job security. The New York City DOE is the definition of toxicity. So, I did others things with my life. Now at 59 years old with three (not boasting) college degrees, I find myself working as a security guard making peanuts for a living in a dead-end job with no pension, no benefits, a simple but confusing 401k (knowledge of the stock market is needed), and the list goes on and on. How about that for a story? P. S. I also worked as a substitute teacher for 8 years in NYC public schools. The worst 8 years of my life.

It's so bizzare to me the concept of how students act. When i was in highschool a few years ago i always was respectful to teachers (i always was a teachers pet i chose to be a TA twice and be a ta in 5th grade aswell 😂) But i also was so lazy with my work. If i was interested I'd put in effort into my essays but then I'd get A's on essays that were supposed to be 3 weeks long, but then I'd do it all in 2 nights and somehow get A's constantly. It honestly made me put less effort in cuz students that put in no effort. During covid my proudest assignment i got a B or B- and i had great feedback on thr assignment and i felt i actually deserved that

I really wish we were teaching them as littles that cramming is not effective learning. I give my college students some tests early on and then I ask: Are you getting the grade you want? How are you studying? Then we talk about effective studying based on science snd misconceptions about cramming. Then we go over how to make a 90-minute session more effective.

I’ve been teaching history (World and US) for the better part of a decade. I cannot tell you how much I connected with your story; being overwhelmed, teaching as a performer, wanting the best for my students, but feeling as though I’m going to fail them. Right down to the moment that you closed the laptop and decided to connect with them as human beings. Your story is one that I wish every teacher/person heard. That while we might want to “be the best”, we are our best when we are true and authentic with those around us. I cried when I heard this, because I realized, “I’m not alone!” This feeling that I have to act in order for my students to learn, I realize, like you, that I can just be myself and care for my students; and that authentic presentation, that is what makes me a great teacher. That is when they tell me, “This was the best class I’ve ever had.” Thank you for sharing this, brother.

Basicaly its trying to replicate the self-directed learning in the school class. And as a teacher you are acknowledging it. Like: yes it is not learning positive environment, but we are all in it together, yes the grades are little telling, but we are in it all together,... and soo on.

You are the poster child for what teachers should NOT EVER BECOME-- “a PERFORMER “! No - I am not at all MISSING. The point of your video! We all get that part! The “performer”attitude and it IS YOUR WANT- is going to destroy your attitude and career- a lot SOONER than you think!!! You are not an actor, you are not a performer- you are not in the classroom- to -- “constantly be on STAGE”! You sir, need a much better balance between creative approaches and teacher of concepts! Good teachers do want to inspire students to understand and retain concepts that will hopefully inspire them to want to learn more and be life long learners! I GUARANTEE your students like your “ entertainment “, they look forward to being “entertained” Your “dog and pony” show WILL create a LACK OF DEPTH, because it’s “”just a show” NO- your TEST scores DO NOT- reflect long term learning! Long term learning and teaching that inspires that, is demonstrated when your students get to the point- when they are--INTERNALLY MOTIVATED to INDEPENDENTLY take the CONCEPTS YOU teach and go deeper to understand more keep it! This is very different, than your confusion between “entertainment burnout” and “inspiring”!!

I was looking for advice on presentations to show my daughter. I told her to delete the text from her school project slides and leave just the titles and pictures. She said that everyone else would just read from the screen, so that's what she should do. This video is great, but in places it doesn't follow it's own advice. 5:17 is literally a slide that uses 21 words to tell you never to use more than 10 words on a slide. ;-)
