I have a huge concern can I get an answer please! I’m 5 weeks post op acl and meniscus surgery. I was sitting in a chair and I felt the swelling inside my knee just loosen and the swelling went away out of no where. I have a lot of movement now it feels like. Did I hear my graft?!

Hi, what you are describing sounds very unlikely to result in an ACL graft tear. If you were just sitting and not standing or twisting on your surgical leg the likelihood of tearing your graft is very very low. I can not explain why you felt the swelling go away or why your movement increased but what you describe does not sound risky for an ACL graft. If you are very concerned please seek out an in-person manual assessment by a licensed physical therapist to determine the stability of your ACL graft.

It is not as common but some people do have swelling at 8 weeks after ACL surgery. As long as you are not standing for too long or letting your leg hang down in a chair for too long your swelling should be gradually reducing. Has the swelling reduced over the past 8 weeks?

I just so happen to have the “rare” permanent numbness. It’s been 5-6 years since my surgery I still have no feeling & lots of ankle pain.
@curovate
@curovate Ай бұрын
I'm very sorry to hear that. Yes it does happen that some people do not regain normal sensation around their knee after an ACL surgery. Does this loss of sensation impact your function in any way? I know for many people it does not. The numbness however can be very annoying. The ankle pain is not something that I have heard of after ACL surgery. Was there something else involved with your surgery? Or is the ankle pain related to your numbness.

Hello, there are very specific diet restrictions prior to any major surgery and we have written a blog about that here: curovate.com/blog/preparing-for-knee-replacement-surgery-part-1-are-there-certain-foods-i-should-avoid-before-my-knee-replacement/ However, these restrictions do not exist once you have had surgery. After surgery I would suggest a health diet that allows your body to heal. Drink enough water and consume enough food to provide the energy you need to do your daily exercise and get around. Things that are not great for healing after surgery include: alcohol, highly processed foods, and refined sugars.

Hi Henry, based on what youa re describing it does not sound like you put your healing ACL graft through enough strain to tear the graft. It does not sound like you did any activities that involved twisting around your surgical knee, you did not fall or twist awkwardly. It is not impossible to retear your ACL after walking and swimming but it is very unlikely. Usually a return to sports at an early stage can retear the ACL. It is possible that you did more activity than you are accustomed to and therefore you are experiencing some knee pain and swelling. With that said I can not be certain and if you are very concerned about reinjuring your ACL you should seek out an assessment by a physical therapist to assess the integrity of the ACL graft. Good luck and I hope it turns out to be nothing.

Hello, I had an ACL reconstruction surgery on April 30th (quad graft) on my right knee, so I’m almost 5 weeks out. I had a minor MCL sprain and tear in my lateral meniscus, but according to my surgeon, both are healing on their own so no cause for concern there. Progress was moving normally until this past Friday during PT. While practicing sitting down to standing up, I felt a click on my right knee, just to the left of my kneecap. I know some pain/discomfort may be normal but this click left a bit of a stinging pain feeling on my knee (specifically to the left of my kneecap). My best guess is that this happened to do a bit of overexertion when practicing knee flexion as I did a few exercises before that one in quick succession (little rest between exercises). I told my PT and she mentioned that pops and clicks are normal, but to just monitor the situation. I resumed PT that day with little to no problem. The next day however, that same spot kept bugging me and the stinging feeling persists when I try to bend my knee past ~30 degrees. I was able to sit with my right knee bent ~70-80 degrees and hold it for a while before relaxing, but now I can not sit in that 70-80 degree position for too long without the stinging feeling returning. From what I described, am I just being a bit paranoid or is there cause for concern? I highly doubt I retore my ACL, but I’m a bit frustrated because I was making good breakthroughs, and I don’t want this to set me back. If you believe this is a setback though, I would like to know that
@curovate
@curovate 2 ай бұрын
Hi, I can understand your frustration. You certainly have been working hard on your recovery and you have not done anything that could risk your ACL graft so I understand why you are both concerned and frustrated. Based on everything you are describing above this does not sound like enough stress on the ACL graft to cause any damage at 5 weeks post-op. My guess is that your pain may be related to patellofemoral pain syndrome and not the ACL graft or MCL or meniscus. It is common to have patellofemoral pain with sit to stand exercises especially while recovering from ACL surgery. This issue means that there was some pre-existing wear and tear behind your knee cap and this now results in pain due to the rest (after injury and early surgery phase) and now returning to challenging exercises for the patellofemoral joint. If it is patellofemoral pain syndrome it is nothing to worry about and gets better with exercises. Here is a blog we wrote about patllofemoral pain syndrome: curovate.com/blog/patellofemoral-pain-syndrome/ Also we have an app specifically for people recovering from ACL surgery which you will find helpful and you can find that here: curovate.com/ I would suggest mention these comments to your PT and see if patellofemoral pain syndrome can explain your current symptoms.

@@curovateI appreciate the message. I’ll keep patellofemoral pain syndrome in mind and speak to my PT on the matter. When you mention pre-existing wear and tear, do you mean there could’ve been some damage (for lack of a better word) behind the kneecap prior to the ACL tear? And it seems like rest and reduced activity helps recovery. Is this pain syndrome something to be concerned about? This may be tough to gauge but on average how long does this set someone back (another way of asking it is how long does it take on average to recover from patellofemoral pain syndrome)?

@@banana_cheese5189 yes that there was likely pre-existing wear and tear around the patellofemoral joint and this is very common. No this is not something to be concerned about and typically gets better with continued exercises. It also typically does not require rest. On average it can take 4-6 weeks for patellofemoral pain syndrome to get better with continued exercises.
@curovate

@@banana_cheese5189 no I do not suggest stopping your exercises. It may require a slight change in angle of your knee and hip to make this pain feel better but you should not need to stop the sit to stand exercises completely. All of the mentioned exercises should still be safe.

Hi Whitney, it does not sound like your knee is unstable which is good. For the noises that it makes that do not cause pain I would suggest you ignore these noises. I would suggest you read this blog that we wrote about PFPS and see if it sounds like what you are experiencing. curovate.com/blog/patellofemoral-pain-syndrome/ Please read this and let me know if this applies to you.

What is the ACL is repaired right away, no cartileage damage, and the rehab is done properly. Would you still be at higher risk for OA? Seems like your knee and leg would be pretty much normal again afterwards
@curovate
@curovate 4 ай бұрын
It is the trauma caused by the ACL injury that causes some of the osteoarthritis of the knee. @kqh123

@@curovate yes my understanding is that damage to the meniscus and/or articular cartilage is what produces the OA risk, not so much the ACL tear. @@kqh123 your understanding is correct that it is damage to the cartilage and meniscus that causes knee osteoarthritis. Hello my name is Aaron. I underwent an ACL surgery on my left knee about 8 months ago. After 7 months I started practicing cricket and there was no pain. But a few weeks back while jogging, while taking a pivoting turn I felt a pop accompanied by a little pain. My Physio told me to apply ice and not play for a few days. After that I went back to playing and nothing happened. I didn’t feel any pain but again 10 days later I started feeling some pain on my left knee and now I can’t really hyperextend it as much as my right leg. Standing up after 20mins of complete sitting down gives me a bit of pain. Have I torn my ACL graft? Or is it something else?

@curovate 6 ай бұрын
Hi Aaron, after an ACL surgery the recommendation is to wait at least 9-12 months prior to returning to sports that involve pivoting and twisting such as cricket. It is advisable to wait before returning to sports for at least 9 months and even then you should meet some criteria that suggests you are ready for sports. Here is a great blog we wrote about the requirements of returning to sports after an ACL surgery: curovate.com/blog/when-can-i-return-to-sport-after-acl-injury-or-surgery/ Unfortunately I can not answer your question and it would be very tough to know if you have torn your graft based on your description above. Hi, I tore my ACL while playing badminton 3 years ago during a basic backcourt movement(I was not playing an aggressive game). I underwent ACL-R surgery with a Hamstrings graft + internal brace 2.5 years ago. I had good physiotherapy and achieved strong quad muscles and improved single-leg balancing. Despite my surgeon clearing me to return to sports after evaluating my graft and quad strength, I didn't play badminton for 9 months due to fear of reinjury and waited 2.5 years instead. Now, I've started playing badminton again for the past month, progressing gradually. However, two days ago, I took a wrong step, and I felt a sudden, abnormal twist in my knee with a brief sensation of pain. The pain subsided in 2 to 3 minutes, but this has triggered fear of reinjury, even though my knee is currently okay. How can one overcome the fear of reinjury after waiting for 2.5 years to gain strength and confidence? Thanks.
@curovate
@curovate 9 ай бұрын
It certainly sounds like you have waited more than long enough prior to returning to badminton. If you had already retrained your basic badminton movements such as cutting, lunging, pivoting etc then you likely did everything that you needed to do prior to starting. I would suggest ensuring that you have equal or better strength in your surgical leg compared to your non-surgical leg now that you have returned to badminton. Basic things like can is your vertical jump, double leg jump for distance, single leg jump for distance, single leg triple jump all the same height or distance. If so then they are close to the same strength. Also you can't ignore the mental aspect of returning to badminton. Fear of reinjury is very real and it is tough to overcome. The best thing you can do is train the motions of badminton to feel more comfortable and keep up with strengthening of your surgical leg. Does that help?

Im 3 weeks post op and i felt my knee kind of buckle yesterday but with no pain. Is there a possibility i might’ve stretched or maybe even retear it?

If there was no trauma and you were just doing your permitted activities it is unlikely that you sustained a tear. In the first few weeks your knee can "buckle" due to weakness of your quadriceps muscles. If there is no swelling, no pain and your knee does not feel unstable it is likely nothing to worry about.

@@EasyMoneyHooper yes it is very possible that this was a result of fatigue. I hope it settles.

Hello! It's been about 7months after my acl surgery where they took the graft from my hamstring, and while I havent done much exercise things were completely fine and i could walk normal for a couple of months. However yesterday as I was walking down steps I slipped a bit and felt my kneecap slipping out BUT popping itself back in without rlly dislocating. I'm not sure if it was because I was wearing a knee guard at the time or because the surgery didnt work, im really scared. Pls help!!

Hello, sorry to hear about your slip. What you are describing sounds like a patellar subluxation. This is when the knee cap slides out slightly away from where it usually glides and then quickly slides back to the position where it normally glides. Based on your description I can not be certain if there was any damage done to the ACL graft. I suggest you continue to monitor your knee and if your knee feels unstable, swells, has more pain then you should seek our an in-person assessment by a health care provider to heck the integrity of your graft. Does that help?

I had acl reconstruction (hamstring) and meniscus trim 3 and a half weeks ago. I feel a pulling sensation from the front of my knee while bending when attempting to walk normally, as well as feeling a popping sensation doing this at times. I couldnt bend my knee fully for 3 months before the operation. Is this feeling due to atrophy of whatever muscles are used for full knee movement, or is it to do with the acl? Thanks

I can not be sure but it does not sound like you put enough force into your knee to tear a graft. If you were lacking knee range of motion prior to surgery you will feel pulling and hear all sorts of sounds which are not a concern. Nothing you describe sounds concerning at this point. If your knee starts to feel unstable you should have it assessed.

After 20 days of my surgery something knee swelling will increase and some time it's decrease. Pain is almost gone I can bend my knee around 120 degree but unable to fully straight my knee. And near my knee mussels are getting tight. It is normal suggest any opinion.

Swelling after 20 days can still be normal. It sounds like your knee range of motion is also improving gradually which is great! Keep up with your daily exercises and the swelling should improve. We also have an app for ACL recovery which you can find in this video description.

Hello i had my acl surgery done 55 days ago ... and m still not able to have hyperextension of knee ...is it a retear of my graft? I have only done walking and climed stairs as my doc said to do so ...

It is very unlikely that you have a tear of your graft from just walking and using the stairs. A lack of extension of your knee does not mean that you have torn your ACL graft.

Is there any way to extend my knee extension?
@curovate
@curovate 11 ай бұрын
@@harshkonde5674 yes by doing daily knee extension with a small weight above the knee cap to improve your knee extension.

What if you start to feel the pain years latter will the surgery help or is it too late
@curovate

If you have already had an ACL surgery then there should be no need for another surgery 1 year later. If the ACL graft is intact but you have pain this is not a reason for another surgery. There has to be something wrong with the ACL or the graft to undergo surgery.

Hello, I'm 7 weeks post acl surgery. Today I was walking and it was already a little bit dark so I didn't see a bump on the sidewalk and I didn't expect it so I stepped weirdly on it with my operated leg and I didn't feel pain but I felt more pressure that went through my leg I was able to continue in walking comfortably but when I came home and lie for an hour I spotted reddnes around my kneecap it doesn't hurt but I'm just little bit worried because of the reddnes, it also doesn't seem swollen. Thank you for response

Update I put a cold tissue on the knee and the redness slowly disappeared

That's great to hear that applying some ice reduced the redness. What you described above, stepping awkwardly does not sound like it should cause your ACL graft to tear. I would suggest continuing to use ice and monitor the knee to ensure that it returns back to normal.

Hi Lauren, It's been 12 days since my Acl reconstruction surgery, I'm doing physiotherapy and I am allowed to bear weight on my surgery leg. The problem is that I can feel something in my knee where the surgery has been done when I plantar flex my ankle and do some ankle exercises. I just want to know do I need to worry about this or it's normal after ACL surgery.
