They actually look great! I wondered if I’d need to retouch them but they look the same. I did do two topcoats though so that probably helped

I thought about that but then you wouldn’t be able to fill the nail holes in when you secure the stairs. So I added them did wood filler and then stained

Your carpet didn't work too nasty to me. Now you got noisy stairs that could really cause some damage if you or your kids fall down them.

A useful hack I figured out . I got a really thin plastic place mat from dollar tree and a thin plastic brad folder cheap . I slide them behind cabinets , stair treads , fake beams , ect to use as a paint shield . They work great . Also you can use flashing material if it will slide into the gap . I keep an 8' roll of flashing just in case .
