*FUN FACT:* I learned from listening to Sharon’s new audiobook that both Debbie’s wig & “colorful” t-shirt collection were purchased by Sharon herself. She went to a local gay shop & basically bought a bunch of wigs and every shirt that made her laugh. Out of all the wigs she bought (in natural & crazy colors) in the end she chose Debbie’s signature red hair for her characters hairdo. I can’t recommend her book enough it was so good & this woman’s lead SUCH an interesting life. It’s titled, “Apparently There Were Complaints” by Sharon Gless & you can either by a paperback copy or the audiobook which is read by her. Loved it! 💜💙💚💛🧡❤️

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rc9dp5amxqnFc6c.html in 1984, the crew on CAGNEY & LACEY was working long hours making this history-making show, and there was some disgruntlement in the ranks that was reported to the wonderful and conscientious executive producer, Barney Rosenzweig. He reached out to a 'consultant' who visited the production and recommended that Barney establish a more "personal" friendship with each and every crew member by inviting the individuals to have a quick and friendly private "conversation" with him in his office. The consultant (as near as I can recall) suggested this to improve "esprit de corps." I was a newly promoted (from assistant location mgr) location manager on the show, and the other location manager, Steve Dawson, and I thought it would be funny to video a gag "conversation with Barney" for me, utilizing my infamous ability to exhibit narcissistic grandiosity and a sense of self-importance to comic effect. There was noticeable resistance among the crew to sit down with Barney, as the whole idea made many of the rougher personalities uncomfortable with the idea. In the end, Barney was simply too busy and the attempts to get appointments confirmed with him and the crewmembers (who were busy themselves - SHOOTING the show! -- the whole idea was quietly cancelled!).Steve Dawson and I thought this video would be a fun "poke" at the 'powers that be' and would be fun to show with the gag reel at the wrap party. But upon viewing it, we concluded that I hit a little "too close to home" on several subjects, so the video was vaulted and never screened. After all these decades, I've decided, for better or worse, to unveil it finally, and "let the chips fall where they may!' There are several "inside jokes" contained : 1) Stanley Neufeld, the executive in charge of production at Orion Television was a notoriously cheap and penny-pinching former Unit Production Manager, who reportedly told the propmaster on an early black and white TV series made in NYC to put CAT FOOD on the crackers on the platters of hors d'oeuvres in the hands of the extras portraying waiters during a party scene, and to tell the other extras not to eat the props - because the other extras (the "guests" at the party) were eating all the props, and the propmaster was asking for more money to buy more food for the scene. The propmaster responded that he wouldn't put cat food on the prop crackers because in might sicken the extras, and he suggested a chep, edible, alternative "SPAM" ("We ate in the army - it's cheap, but edible - barely!"). Stanley reportedly acquiesced but said, "Fine - use the SPAM, but TELL them it's cat food!" On cagney & Lacey, I was the early-hired assistant who cleaned the warehouse we used as a studio and put used furniture in the offices of the producer and his writers. In the video I allude to Stanl instructing me to provide Barney with a junk couch that was tossed in the alley behind Orion TV's office building. (this is a joke, of course, but the couch in question was pretty awful, and everybody who ever sat on it commented on that.) When I cleaned the warehouse, I tore out a lot of old disused air conditioning ducting overhead above Barney's office, but a continuous dust residue accumulated on his desk, and he complained to "production" about it, assuming the janitor was incompetent. That janitor is seen laying in the hallway of the "tenement" hallway set visible at the beginning of the video. We thought it would be fun to include Sylvester, and he cheerfully agreed to portray a passed-out wino for us. We portrayed the tenement hallway as leading to Barney's Office as a gag, and you'll notice that the door I open doesn't match the one actually in his office. Ralph Singleton, the amazing Unit Production Manager on our show, had negotiated a directing opportunity for himself with Barney on the 2nd season, much to the chagrin of Tyne & Sharon (the stars) who assumed he was not good enough for their show, which was accumulating a cachet for quality. They put up a fuss, and as I recall, were even demanding his head (they could be pretty intense, back in those days!) but Ralph directed his episode successfully nonetheless. Barney had a popcorn machine in the outer office. of him and the writers, and he instructed his staff to keep free popcorn always available for those passing through the office. The shortening used, though, left something to be desired and was the source of much quiet commentary behind his back.
