I tried it on the wheel and my hands are extremely sore to the point where I can barely move them.

Yes, groggy clay can be painful. I use latex gloves sometimes and it seems to help.

You do make it look so easy. I was wondering how you glaze fire it? Do you put sand under it?
@GauleyRiverPotteryMountLookout3 жыл бұрын
Thank-you. We wax the bottom. No sand. I have heard of some potters doing that though.

What happened with the bottom flange of clay you separated from the bottom of the plate? Did you leave it in place until leather hard, then cut away? Also how much clay did you start with? Thank you!
@GauleyRiverPotteryMountLookout3 жыл бұрын
I used to leave the little flange until leather hard but I have been pulling it off right away now rewedging and making something else with my scraps. I use 4.5 pounds for my 10 inch pie plates(finished size) and 3.5 for my 9 inch pie plates. Thanks for the comment.

Wow, never seen a standing potter at a wheel, but for the Indians, standing over those manual wheels (armstrong!).

Could you please give the dimensions of the plate and also the thickness. How much did this plate shrink?
@GauleyRiverPotteryMountLookout4 жыл бұрын
HI Lauren, My pie plates are usually 10 inches wide and 3 inches tall. I Make them about 11.5 inches wide and about 3.5 inches tall to get that in the end. The clay shrinks about 15%. I am not sure about the thickness maybe 1/8 inch. Thank-you for your comment.
