One thought regarding a video recording of a surgical procedures is patient privacy is compromised as it relates to their bodies and various exposures. However, I agree with the idea of a verbal recording which would be no different than the written recording that we do in charting.

Really important to know about the resources. I have been both an OR RN and an Asbestos Contractor/Supervisor and to have access to awesome guidance from AORN makes it so much easier to think about how and what to prepare for to continue to provide safe patient care. TY❤

You’re talking about OR nurses, but What about scrub techs who are standing up at the surgical field, often leaning over the patient and the site on which the bovie is being used? The smoke is often rising into the faces of the scrub tech and the surgeon, causing them to directly breathe it in. It’s not as big of a deal for a nurse standing 10 - 15 feet away, but for those up at the surgical field, it is often going in their faces .

I don’t like this video. The circulators are taking credit for all the work the SURGICAL TECHNOLOGISTS do. Most nurses I see scrub do a mediocre job at best. Nothing in a nurses training or education teaches them how to scrub a surgery. This is why we need National Certification for Surgical Technologists. Having anyone other than a CST scrub a case is dangerous for the patient.

What about the plastic bits that comes in the sterile packaging, like plastic caps on laparoscopic trocars? There has been an incident in our practice, the plastic cap was left inside a patient unnoticed for 2 years till he came for another surgery. Is there a count policy for those?

OHSA has not acted because there is no convincing evidence to regulate the very tool that surgeons use to incise vital organs. OSHA has been looking at this issue for decades, ever since Tomita et al was published in 1982. NIOSH has done investigations of the air quality in multiple ORs across the US and has never found anything of concern in the air that the OR team actually breaths. The Harvard School of Public Health published data from the Nurses' Health Study that showed that OR had a LOWER, yes lower, risk of lung cancer compared to Nurses who did not work in the OR. By pretending that the OR is an environmental hazard you will potentially scare nurses away from the OR and thus increase their risk of dying from lung cancer.

It would be nice if ALL THE OR PACE would be this slow. Unfortunately, not in real life. It is 10x faster than this! If all the OR cases would move this slow, you'd get alot of backlog and bumped cases. C'mon now, be real.

Dear colleagues, Great video, thank you so much. I have been working in surgeries for 18 years and have many specialist courses in this field My question to you are what are the requirements for practicing the profession of OR nurse in USA. I searched a lot and found nothing specific about this topic. Is there a specific exam to practice this profession?
