I like my drums perfectly on a grid. With how i record my music... I suck at playing on beat. Idk how tho. Been playing for years. When I go to record my guitars with an imperfect drum track everything will just feel so off and annoying to me, I just hate that. Like I'll play to a metronome and everything will usually look pretty dead on most of the time with the click. Or I'll play and record my guitar first with a metronome perfectly but after i record the drums to it, it sounds so off. No lantacy issues at all either.. like it will sound great live but listening back sucks. I would have to go back and edit soo much of my midi hits...I may just need some quantization?

This was me when I first started. I stumbled across your video and bam. I watch a good amount of your videos and man my mixes, while not perfect, are actually pretty decent now. One of my buddies who’s been mixing music, and does quite well, actually complimented me and pointed me towards your videos and other mixing materials. Thanks for what you do!

Very good video! Those that complain about squashing or ruining the mix doing this, completely overlook that you have to be subtle! Over-compression, saturation, limiting, and soft-clipping WILL ruin your mix. The trick is to not be lazy and throw all your processing on a bus and hope it works. Take the time to attack the transient tracks individually, fatten the non-transient tracks subtly, and remove resonances to increase loudness while maintaining clarity. If you’re unsure you’re doing it right, GET A REFERENCE TRACK to check yourself! Don’t marry the meters and live by what they say. After you balance your mix (without plugins), you can focus on taming the transient information, but make sure you listen to your before-and-after to make sure you’re not straying away from the balance you’ve created.

@@thefuse03101 I took raw samples of the drummer's kick/snare and blended them in about 30% for consistency. But none of the drums are from pre-packaged sounds, all were recorded at the studio.

I have this issue where the signal will go jagged for a partial second. I cant tell if its comin from my pick ups or bad frets, or my cpu falling behind. when i look at the actual signal you'll see it look all jagged like a lightning bolt . mayby its from recording direct into the interface and not with an amp thats mic ed .. I dont know

hey man i know its not your genre, but any chance you can talk about mixing/tracking/panning guitars for indie music or even just basic alt rock? Do the same hard panning rules apply and should i still edit guitars on time to some degree? maybe not as specific as prog metal but yk…

I'd recommend if you want the room mics to sound like what the drummer is hearing, work out the distance and then delay the tracks to replicate the return journey to the drummer. Sound travels at just over 1ms per feet. The Haas effect occurs beyond 40ms, so ideally you will get the best results with room mics being greater than or equal to 20 feet away from the kit. A tip learned by watching videos of Steve Alibini recording.

If you have a whole song in perfect synch on the drums, that's okay. Unless there is a part with 16th notes on the bass drums. Then you should only edit them slightly to fix the obvious off parts. A ballad can be edited 100% and sound great.

i'll have to try this. my go to for making "fake" room tracks, is to actually record the drum sound from my daw in my mix room with a LDC and another LDC in the hall just outside the room, essentially creating a real drum room track, but it's more than work than just doing it withhin the daw

Another awesome and very simple video. Thank you. I was struggling with a mix and toying with changing the low end eq between bass and kick and watched your video. Literally followed your advice to a tee and now it sounds wayyyyyyy better. The bass is cutting through with clarity. So simple. Thanks again.

I got an even better idea. I keep listening to what i like and don't listen to what i don't like. Ok but in seriousness i really don't dig that it's going in this direction i fear what we'll end up with is people making music with just AI because it's convenient for them but i hope i'm wrong 🤞

I'm struggling to make drum bus compression with ezdrummer. Can anyone explain it to me? I'm opening ezdrummer as a virtual instrument and I route every single drum sound on different track. Once I'm done, I create another track, which serve as folder for all other tracks including the one with ezdrummer. The problem is that when I apply compression on the folder fx track, I cannot solo it to hear it separately, because it's in dependency with the original ezdrummer track. If I mute the ezdrummer track, automatically I cannot hear the folder track with compression. Any ideas?

Something I was guilty of, and seen HEAPS of people do, is hit their master bus chain waaay too loud... or slamming a single compressor to try and be loud...
