I understand that Ridley Scott is a filmmaker and was trying to set the "tone" for his film with this scene, but the cost of that was truth - this depiction of Marie Antoinette and her final moments are totally false.

This whole movie was a mess, from start to finish. It was a bad concept to even start with - you couldn't put Napoleon's life in a single move - let alone this contrived mess. Scott still knows how to frame an interesting picture visually, but his ability to actually tell a coherent story has gone, sadly.

“Ça Ira” is a song that can be applied to the state of our current world. The class divide and systemic issues and oppression the working class from the bourgeoisie and upper class is horrible. Vive la Socialisme!

Notice in the beginning, how Marie Antoinette desperately tries to protect her children from a vicious mob. That’s one accuracy in the depiction. She stated that her enemies were, “all those who would bring harm to my children.” The night before her death she wrote on the back of her prayer book, “My God have pity on me! My eyes have no more tears left to weep for you my poor children. Adieu, adieu.” 😢♥️🙏 (They accused her of disgusting things, but I believe that was orchestrated. These quotes give some truthful insight of her character.)

I didn't rate this movie at all. A man that conquered most of Europe having fought so many famous battles, along with being a military genius, and the focus is on him lovemaking with Josephine numerous times. Such a wasted opportunity.

The French Royal Family needed to be deposed, just like the Czars of Russia in 1917. However, the mass murder and executions of innocent people serve to discredit the Jacobins and Leninists alike. They went to extremes with blood-lust and a desire to purge people merely because of disagreement or "thought crimes." No revolution can be sustained on this kind of mob-violence and mass-murder. People get sick of it and seek to topple the very regime that promised them deliverance from absolutism. Bonaparte's regime was a vast improvement over the Bourbons in terms of the justice system, meritocracy, education, healthcare, economic productivity. The problem was that the Great Powers of Europe would never forgive France for deposing their king and queen in such a way. Had the Jacobins sought to, and actually succeeded in creating a moderate constitutional monarchy, as folks had done in Britain, things wouldn't have spiraled out of control and all the bloodshed of 1789-1815 could have been avoided.

I'm a big Marie Antoinette fan of her fairytale , but Hollywood movies made her seem like a saint and she tried to help some But she was never meant to be a queen and was never taught to be one but her mother and fate chose her to be one. But she was a terrible queen.

Once again, superficial films sanctify Maria Antoniette and demonize Robespierre. Marie Antoniette didn't deserve any mercy. She plotted the invasion, partition and plunder of France with the european aristocracy, and gave vital war information to the enemy. Also, she was out of touch. Her lifestyle in Versailles couldn't (of course!) win her the sympathies of starving masses. Her selfishness caused too much damage.

Ridley scott a spiteful brit alas, this trainwreck had me in total disbelief as how could a man of the stature of Bonaparte be displayed in such rancid manner. The fact that they spent 200 million on this trash heap is so pathetic. English truly know how to bring down even their own achievements not withstanding those of their foes.

I cannot imagine how Marie Antoinette feels about this wave current of revolution heading her way. I bet reality must have hit her hard and realized it was too late to change France for the better. It goes to show how naive she has been despite being a mother and wife to her husband which leads her to think "Oh France is okay since I am their queen, right? Wrong sister! The citizens try to find better ways to get food and a roof over their heads because of wars, economic failures, taxes, and famine that purged France for years since her reign. And since she keeps disappearing from Versailles nobles even the people felt that their queen cares not for them which lead her as a scapegoat to their hatred.

Is there anyone who actually likes this film, because I’m seeing a lot of hate here.

For me it is not the historical inaccuracies but why? Why does a film about Napoleon begin with the execution of Marie Antoinette? Apart from the historical Napoleon not having a hand in it, the opening does not effectively establish Napoleon as a character by giving the audience insight into his motivations and general psyche. Scott could have used this scene to bridged onto Napoleon reflecting on the Regin of Terror (which he disapproved of in private) and his personal ambitions. Alternatively, Scott could have opened with the storming of the Bastille, of which Napoleon was a helpless observer (instead of the execution) and used Napoleon's actual journal entries about the incident to accomplish the aforementioned.

If she had just left with the Countess of Artois and Provence she would have lived much longer. Its so crazy how the crowd treated her and didnt care she was the daughter of a Holy Roman Empress who had the biggest empire in Europe at the time. Oh such a pity

Historically, there is so much wrong with this scene. But hey, its Ridley Scott, the guy who always asks "Were You There?" Well, no, but a hell of a lot of others were-& recounted it for posterity. But Ridley's never let the facts get in the way of a dramatic movie scene. Which basically accounts for so much of this movie as a wild tale of fiction-not what actually happened.
