I think collecting the popular artists all those years ago was the gateway drug to seeking out the obscure stuff later on. Back then inexpensive unwanted vinyl was a great way to discover music. It was a unique time when people didn't want old records like they do now. it would have been nice to have my current knowledge of music when I was younger, but I'm grateful to have collected what I still have from those days. To this day I'm still learning about music I've never heard before.

Hi Mike, nice to look and listen at your video's, especially when it concerns 78's. I hear you talk about label names en sometimes in combination with the colour it is (physically). Can you explain what the colour has to do with the label and the record? Thanx in advance for your reaction. Greets from the Netherlands by Paul PS: you also uses the abbreviation R&B. Do you mean rhythm and blues by that?

Some record labels used different colors, often to make it easier to identify genres. Columbia 78s had a red label and they put out a bunch of common stuff. I always say to check those red labels since rare blues 78s can also be found on Columbia.

For visiting Americans a guide to UK Sunday car-booting. 1. Set the alarm for 5.30 am. When it goes off spring out of bed and throw the bloody thing across the room and go back to bed till 10.30am. 2. If it's raining stay in bed. 3. If it's sunny stay in bed. This is the UK and it's sure to be raining within 30 minutes. 4. DO NOT take the wife. She will only spend the entire time complaining whilst you flick through the Val Doonican rarities. There's also the strong possibility she will buy a load of useless tat that she insists you can't do without even though you've got through the first 60 years of your existence without any of it. 5. Be prepared for disappointment. The last decent Northern Soul 45 was found in 1983. Every chance of coming across a Whistling Jack Smith but unless, like Mike you're as mad as a hatter, then best to leave it where it is. 6. Whilst perusing the records on sale take the time to reconsider your collecting habits. If you had not settled on collecting doo-wop, rockabilly, or soul and instead had gone for James Last you'd be making out like a bandit right now. 7. Return home ignoring the wife's pitying told-you-so looks and kid yourself that next week it will be different. Well, it'll still be raining !
