I live near former Boston and Maine and Maine Central tracks that were bought by Pan Am and now CSX so I consider this my railroad heritage (through CSX), and it makes me feel connected to 3985 without ever seeing her in person.

My son is special needs and he loves trains 🚆🛤🚋🚞🚝🚊🚉🚈🚇🚅🚄🚃🚂 especially F Units like those he thinks they along with E units are highly underrated and all should be preserved, restored, and put back into service pulling and pushing passengers and freight. He also thinks that Progress Rail, Siemens, or any other company that builds railroad equipment should build full size working replicas of F Units and E units with updated features like recycled ♻️ aluminum bodies and frames, LED headlights, ditch lights and strobe light, Cummins and Caterpillar genset diesel motors that run on biodiesel or renewable diesel with mufflers and catalytic converters, Plexiglas and safety glass windows 🪟 , head end power.

That’s quite a list of particulars. He sounds like a fine young man. 👍. I’m glad he enjoyed my video. I didn’t include it in my description, but as an interesting side note there was a rare earthquake early that morning. It’s epicenter was in Westchester County, New York, not far from where much of this excursion took place. It woke me up in my apartment in Queens. It’s the only tremor I have ever experienced. I now live near Atlanta, but my brother and sister on Long Island recently experienced 2 earthquakes in the same day. They were located on the same Ramapo Fault, but further to the west, in New Jersey.

I wonder what happened to cn 3254 and her whistle
@yankinga2 ай бұрын
She has been retired. Sometime during her active service life, she collided with a Great Northern locomotive. As a result of the collision, she was left with a bent frame and was a rough rider. I can attest to that, having ridden in her cab once. It felt like she had square wheels. B&M Pacific 3713 is supposed to take her place once it’s been restored. (They’ve been restoring it since the dawn of time.) Don’t hold your breath. Steamtown is as hapless and hopeless as the rest of the federal government.

@yankinga3 ай бұрын
Born 8/29/57 66 Years old. The other commenter is a pal of mine. The part about "bashing passenger trains" is an inside joke. "Bashing" is a British thing. It involves riding behind every locomotive of a particular class and trying to log 1000 miles. We both know a British transplant who "bashes" Amtrak P42s. It is totally meaningless to me because A) I way prefer railfanning trackside and chasing over riding trains and B) I couldn't care less about Amtrak and commuter trains. To me, the P42s are ugly and the Siemens Chargers are uglier still. The only reason to ride for me is for the mountain scenery. I've ridden the Coast Starlight, the California Zephyr, the Sunset Limited and the Southwest Chief a couple of times each. I'm done with those. I rode the Empire Builder once, out of Portland. The Columbia River Gorge and the section of the Rockies that we passed in daylight were nice, but too much of the best scenic locations are passed in the dark. From Havre Mt. to Chicago is a boring nothingburger. Won't be doing that train again. I've ridden over Sand Patch on the Capitol Limited. Th only remaining routes I want' to cover are the Pennsylvanian over Horseshoe Curve and The LA to San Diego run, once they've stabilized the railroad. I rode it once but they were substituting buses for the best part of the route. The construction work is still ongoing.

would a steam engine carry this train,
@yankinga5 ай бұрын
Not sure exactly what you mean, so I’ll answer it in two parts. Is there a restored and operating steam locomotive that is capable of pulling this train ? Absolutely. There are a number of them. Does CSX have such a locomotive, or care to make arrangements to use one of the existing ones? Absolutely not. Apart from Union Pacific, no class one railroad is “steam friendly” and UP will only allow the two that they own (844 & 4014) to operate on their system.

I hope the creator of these movies is still at it. The shot locations were excellent, well away from the whistle blow-zone. I like the sound of the engines and boilers. The whistle from a distance is filled with romance, close up it's overwhelming and annoying. Monster passenger train, 30 cars. I know a bit of the railroads around Huntington, WV. The rails run along the Ohio River and the gradients approach 0%. I don't think it would take much of a hill to stall that locomotive with that train.

The early to mid 90’s was a heck of time to be a little kid. I got to see 3985 come through Cincinnati on the way to go do this Santa train. Rode behind 611 up and down the old N&W Peavine from Cincinnati to Portsmouth(missed school the next day because my eyes were glued shut from all the cinders.) Stood on the walkway of an old control tower on the C&O bridge coming into Cincinnati while came through when she was painted up at C&O 2765( in place of 2716). The southbound freight that passed before scarred me to death with all the vibration the diesels caused. When 765 came through everything was as smooth as glass, very little vibration. Everything changed after Amtrak and CSX changed their policies on insurance and age of equipment, but for about 5-7 years in the late 80’s and early 90’s vintage steam reigned supreme.

so steep even the trucks on the road are struggling
@yankinga8 ай бұрын
To be fair, the highway is much steeper than the railroad. Whereas the tracks snake through what seem to be endless curves, including the famous loop, Hwy 58 goes straight up the pass. On the other hand, each truck only moves a pittance of the weight of a train. The advantage of trucks is that they can take your freight from your loading dock directly to the other guy's loading dock. Railroads have the advantage over distances greater than 400 miles. That is why you see so many JB Hunt, Schneider, Amazon, FedEx and UPS, etc. vehicles on trains. Most of them are containers but UPS still prefers complete trailers on piggyback flat cars. The railroads don't like piggyback because of the higher tare weight and wind resistance at higher speeds, versus 2 containers per well (platform) on articulated double stack cars. I believe that UPS's reasoning is that their trailers have a below-floor-level cargo space that is built integrally with the chassis and can not be separated and stacked like containers can.
