I have a wood porch floor that's about 20 years old and it's only had sealer on it and I pressure wash it from time to time. My question is which stain will cover the old grain best but penetrate the wood? I want stain that will only fade over time and not flake up like paint does. Any suggestions on which I should use? Trying to hide imperfections as well.

What nails would you use on mahogany? Our decks nails have all popped up. They look like very flimsy finish nails.

My deck is nailed down all nails have backed out little bit need to be hit down . So I'm gonna take them out and flip boards bottom side are perfect no angle cuts (if it did i'd flip board over then flip left to right angle be the same) Dont care bout putting crown side down. Quick sand while boards are off good stain sealer. Good for years .

Thanks for the information. I have an old generation trex which my handy man kept pressure washing. We were unaware of it. For the past yr mold has grown. Unable to remove it. Called the manufacturer. As per their recommendation Used 5% vinegar directly on the mold, with soft bristle. Doesn't seem to work. Hence used a harder brush and 6% vinegar. Seems to have worked better. But feel it seems abrasive. Pl. help what to do. Also olympic premium brightener is what Trex has recommended to use. But I don't see good review on it working well on mold removal. Pl. help. Any updates on versacryl? Have you had any good long lasting results with them? Pl. help

Everett- is it absolutely necessary to follow up sodium percarbonate with oxalic acid? What if you’re working around water ways or certain plants? Doesn’t using oxalic acid negative the environmental benefits of sodium percarbonate? Thanks!
@wizardofwood
@wizardofwood 11 күн бұрын
@@kylebaker8224, as in most things there are exceptions to every rule. The “Clean Water Act” states no chemicals into the water of the U.S. So, definitely no acid. Sodium Percarbonate and Hydrogen Peroxide are both considered environmentally friendly chemical compounds. I prefer sodium percarbonate when I am on a situation where I can use it.
@kylebaker8224
@kylebaker8224 11 күн бұрын
Thanks! Will not using brightener after cleaning with percarbonate cause any issues with the follow up staining? Or does it not need to be neutralized like metasilicate and hydroxide do?

Cheaper price usually don't equal to quality work. This looks like 💩 my landlord would do to cut corners to spend less..... its just a bandaid method. A lot of what I've been seeing is not letting the treated lumber dry out first before building. I've had to do a lot of repairs due to that. Same goes for not protecting the cut ends of your boards. Shoulda, coulda but ya didn't, now it's gonna cost ya!!!!!!

Hi Everett! Great tip on using both Stripper Plus and Stripper. My thought is if there’s more deeper organic growth after that would you use Stripper Plus again so you don’t need to brighten or higher concentrate of Stripper?

Tough task to remove a solid stain or paint. Not many strippers are effective on solids and it takes quite an effort. Then there is usually some sanding involved. deckandwoodstain.com Has a product DRP Stripper Plus that helps remove these types of coatings. Deck Restoration Plus is the manufacturer of these products.

Great video Everett. Do you have any thoughts on staining the underside of a (8’ high) deck? We’d like to freshen up the underside but are worried about trapping moisture in the joists etc. Would using a breathable stain avoid this problem? Apologies if you’ve already posted a video on the subject.
@wizardofwood
@wizardofwood 23 күн бұрын
Great question! On an elevated deck it is best to just keep it clean with no coating. However, with today’s focus on outdoor living space this may not be an option. Many homeowners are adding paver patios, stamped concrete patios, and more types of living space under their decks. Some folks are adding a roofing system under the decks as well. So, if you are going to coat the underside for appearance, the best option is a sealer, next would be a semi-transparent. Be careful of solids and semi-solids that will chip and peel. The underside is much more time consuming labor wise. Also, if spraying you must be very careful spraying upward between planks. Sealers and semi-transparent will be easier to maintain and re-coat in the future.

i recently clean a 5 year old pressure treat deck that had thin cedar boards. Looked new when I started but had some green algae in areas. After finishing using my normal process (1 cup SM to 1 gal and 1 cup oxalic to 1 gal) the deck looked grey and had some fuzzing. Not sure what happened have used the same process other times and had great results< any help is greatly appreciated.
