One idea is with new product going forward is to put a "radiation card" that is sensitive to the radiation from the scan and it turns an incriminating color once scanned. The trouble with this, though, is what if a malevolent customer then scans the radiation card intentionally after opening a box that had no hits in it, just so that they can try to get a bogus refund out of it. Otherwise, what materials can the wrappers be wrapped in the block out the scan? Lead sounds, uh, toxic and sketchy, though, i know it would work. Anything less toxic and cheaper to produce?

Sports card collecting has become a Pyramid Scheme. 99.9% of collectors will lose their money. The card companies has figured out to keep the marks, sorry collectors interested in this dead hobby is to put out cards with out of 1 or 10 or some bullshit number. At the end of the day sports cards are junk unless you are talking about the 1960s and earlier. People are paying stupid prices for some of these newer cards are for me “mentally retarded “. I personally think we should all boycott the industry for a year or two (not easy)... Let the manufacturer (Topps, Fanatics, Panini, ect ) know that without all of us the cards are worthless. If you watched the entire interview, this has been happening for years and was kind of a "dirty little secret".... They are currently investigating a number of big breakers as being crooked and especially the couple of breakers who are foolish enough to predict their pulls seconds earlier. I personally will not be buying from any breakers (especially the big ones).... This is truly sad news! Why do you think everyone is a breaker now??? Seriously, think about it!!! I am sure that there are legit individuals breakers but how do u know that their distributor has not scanned previously. This simply sucks!!! Can't trust anything in this industry right now!!! Sorry for the pessimistic view!!!

People think $15 is too much to grade a card. I don't think many packs will be scanned at $75 per. But can they do this at scale? I wouldn't think so. So the hobby is grumbling over some negligible amount of packs being scanned? I just don't really get the uproar.
@SportsCardsLive
@SportsCardsLive 7 күн бұрын
You’re missing the big picture man. You think the only way to scan product is to use these guys at $75/pack? Technology moves fast and is copycatted and this doesn’t seem to be proprietary so it’s only a matter of time before there are scanning stations set up in everybody’s basement just like the personal computer used to be unattainable now every household has several.
@lapp3r30shockeycardflips

@SportsCardsLive I don't disagree tech moves fast. The PC has practical home use and need, and even that is fading since we all use phones. The CT scanner does not hold practical use where it is needed to be mass produced at scale. It has a nuanced use case. I don't think the PC is a good comparison.

That Griffey Cup Auto card sold for very low, because it’s not licensed by MLB and Griffey is wearing a generic blank hat with no Seattle Mariners logo which would have made it much more valuable! I’ve thought this through a million different ways. There is actually 1 way to completely solve this issue but hobby shops/3rd parties would be hit. Direct from Topps/Panini to consumer. All worry would be eliminated as they already see all the cards that they create. I believe Topps is heading that way anyway as a lot more can be made doing so.

Definitely feels like the easiest excuse for the card companies to cut out every middle man and claim "for the safety of our consumers" we are strictly doing direct-to-consumer / online distribution / licensed breakers. To counter that, this breaks their fundamental selling point of trading cards: the gamble. So if everyone knows what's inside, then it becomes about addiction and fomo, which to be fair has been Topps' business model for a while now, and it has been proven to work very well. Pack weighing and attached value to weighed packs has been around for a long time, and rumors of some LCS/online distributors weighing product has also been around, so this new tech adds another layer to the 'trust' aspect of the hobby supply chain. No matter what or who is doing it, be it one company publicly or many privately, one thing is undeniably true: any currently sealed product from any era before this discovery has an *. Whether or not the card companies will protect their product from this type of tech is yet to be known, but I think most collectors would appreciate it if they did, and hopefully without just going to direct-to consumer. PS: A possible idea that could help is doing what Pokemon Center Japan does, which is do lotteries for a single box at cost before the product release date, so X number of consumers can get a direct-to-consumer price and product shipped to them on release date, but before there is any possible tampering or price-bump from the secondhand market.
