I know that the common doctrine is to set powered speakers to 0dB, but it's interesting to note that if you dig deep into QSC documentation, you will find that the recommended settings for the KW family when used with their Touchmix digital mixers is 5 clicks past 0dB, and 4 clicks past 0dB for the original K series, and 2 clicks past 0dB for the newer K.2 family. Basically, the amp module from every series has an optimal setting that is not 0dB and is not equal to other series either. These settings gain stage well with every digital mixer I've ever used these products with, not just the Touchmix... so I think the take away is this: 0dB is NOT NECESSARILY the correct value for every powered speaker with every mixer or audio source out there. I don't think going to +2 or +3 on these Presonus boxes is actually a problem. Might have been nice if the LED was labeled "Input Clip" to make it more obvious what is actually clipping.

Great video! How do these speakers hold up in the sun?
@SignalStrengthAudio2 ай бұрын
I’ve had them in the sun for hours at a time and no issues. The rain hasn’t been as issue either as I have run into that. Only performance issue I’ve encountered was lack of AC power. They will fluctuate in volume when the power source isn’t great, but that’s by no means the fault of the speaker. I’m really liking them!

Great job here.! Question what are the differences between the two CDL12p and the CDL12? Just Dante connection and a birch cabinet.? Plus one per side would there be enough volume for 200 people in a 3 piece band situation?
@SignalStrengthAudio3 ай бұрын
As far as I know, that is exactly the differences. The software for controlling them via Dante is quite good tho. Haven’t had the poly box next to the birch box yet.

@@SignalStrengthAudio Would they have enough volume for outdoors?

I have used 4 of them (2 per side) outdoors multiple times with crowds up to 1000 and they did great. Also had 2 double 18 subs. Honestly is great box.

I do musicals with children. I need mics that can pick up voices from farther away from the mic. Try as I may, half the kids back away from, not towards, the mic when they speak. Fear, I guess, but parents want to hear their babes speak. Any ideas?
@SignalStrengthAudio3 ай бұрын
Are the kids in a group or individual kids talking one at a time? For the group of kids, you could try a shotgun mic, or even a couple of choir mics, I have had great success with Josephson C42, the Lewitt LCT40, or really any small condenser mic for a group usually will work well. For individual speakers, the distance and room would really play a part in which microphones to use. The sm58 is a good choice for most situations! Good luck!

If the first speaker is going to be at +3db is the second one stay at 0db or that one at +3db as well?
@SignalStrengthAudio4 ай бұрын
Yes. In theory they would want to have the same output in order to work together properly. So both (or all) at +3

Do you think an outdoor gig using only 2 CDL’s would cover 5-700 people?
@SignalStrengthAudio4 ай бұрын
Well yes and no… depends on the type of music and the layout of the venue. Also if you get the speakers up in the air it definitely helps get that throw going. And subs. I use 2 double 18 subs with 2 cdl’s per side and covered 500 people easy with a rock band. Without an issue. Concessions were about 300-350ft away from the stage and I could sit there and enjoy the show easy.
@SignalStrengthAudio4 ай бұрын
I miss read your question sorry… one per side would be more like 300 people. If your space doesn’t have people too far away from the stage then it might be enough…. I recommend 2 per side outdoor in general.

I don’t know what Presonus engineers had in their mind when they decided to show a hell of that clipping light showing as if the speaker is about to die but in reality they just sound great. I have used them on a gig for several hours and they did so well. Probably they need to send the updated/ upgraded version of the dsp board to the customers as a recall/swap option of this issue.

The clipping indicator is useful, but it does seem to me like they could have better optimized the gain staging of the thing. clipping the ADC of the DSP should not be the bottleneck... There should be enough gain built in to the DSP and amplifier that the first thing to clip would be the amplifier.

I usually do 4 to 5 outdoor event with bands and I have JBL SRX and QSC systems which works out great, but sometimes the guest are farther away from the stage becuase of shade. So in order to not blast out the people in the audience I'm considering buying a Pair of the Presonus CDL12p and have them approx 100' - 150' away from the stage. I was concern about the clipping problem from talking to other DJ's but your settings seems great. I'm going to get a set to see how it works out. Thanks for the info.😁

What db did you set your boxes too? Also what was the db of your master fader? I ask cause many people bring up the clipping issue
@SignalStrengthAudio5 ай бұрын
Greetings, yes the clipping issue. It seems the box clips on the input section of the amplifier….so the input is clipping, not the actual amp. Depending on the show, I will use 2 boxes per side, with the input at +2. It seems a good balance (better perhaps) of what the input wants to control and the actual output of the box. I’ll admit the clip seems excessive when using the 0 db input setting. I use subs 99% of the time and utilize the low pass filter on the box, and I will also cut the lower frequencies with EQ on the mains.
@ryandavis3175 ай бұрын
@@SignalStrengthAudio I have tested the boxes to +5db and the master fader on -4.5 or -10. No clip 😁😁😁…I have 1 box per side.

Awesome review of it! I did on on the CDL 10P and it’s almost exactly the same as you mention, the vocals shine, and the weight 10Ibs less but has the same output!!
@SignalStrengthAudio6 ай бұрын
I wanted to add something to this that I wish I would have said in the video about the Crossover points of this box. Vocals absolutely shine with these speakers because the crossover point is in the 400htz range while most boxes cross over in the 800-1200 range. Thanks for watching!
@TylerMarletteNY6 ай бұрын
line array boxes have just as much output or more then point source or constant curvature. almost all line array boxes have 2 LF drivers and a large horn. I use HDL6As (one of the smallest true line arrays) and they have just as much or more power then a k12. they can be used with 1 or 2 boxes per side also but being 10x100 you have to place them right above head height if that’s all your using and that coverage is only the horn not the LF
@SignalStrengthAudio6 ай бұрын
My next investment is going to be the rcf hdl6, I'm going to start with 4 per side. Super happy with their performance! I can still use my crank stands with 4 boxes easily. Makes things so much easier. Output of a single line array box (which in reality is a point source in this scenario) is good yes, but when their friends play along its where it shines. Back to the CDL's, one thing that really makes them great is the crossover point being down in the 400's, it really helps the vocal intelligibility and thats key on all my gigs. They won't win and SPL races however. How many HDL's are you normalling using? After working with a few different brand line arrays, the rcf is hard to beat for the money. Adamson is super nice but you'll pay premium....the Meyer/L'Acoustic range is simply out of my league lol
