One of Will's that I rarely hear, and a truly excellent side, and it sounds wonderful on your Brunswick Panatrope. Osborne's likely the arranger for the ballad here, although this Freddy Martin's orchestra truthfully, if I'm not mistaken.

I’ve never heard anyone call it a Panatrope, I’ve always called it my 1918 Ultona, as per the reproducer and the fact that the latest patent date I can find in the thing is from September of 1918

@thecanadiankraut2788 I'm not an expert on Brunswick machines, it could very well be an alternative. But never trust the patent dates, those are related to the manufacturer and/or labels. If people did, then any Victor you'd find for the 20s would be 1906 at the latest! Find a serial number if there is one, just like it would be on a Victor machine.

I have reason to believe it could be from 1918, considering a newer motor I bought from the 20s to replace some old broken parts had several later patients stamped on it going as far as December 12 of 1922 that my other one was simply missing, however I will take a look into that serial number as getting a more definitive date would be wonderful

With the recording of this one side in December, 1932 is likely what started the descriptive nickname that followed Osborne for about a year or so after, in which the common critics of him and his orchestra called his "Just An Echo Of The Vallee", still sour about his former rivalry with fellow crooner Rudy Vallee back in 1929 - 1931.

Kind of interesting to see one of these old machines play a record that was made for it -- the tone arm is moving towards the center at a rate that is actually noticeable over just a few seconds. The label looks like it says "For convenience use tungsten needles". If that's what it really says and not just a trick of the shadows, that would wear the record out really fast, because tungsten is insanely hard, approaching corundum; not sure if it is the absolute hardest metal, but has to be getting up there. The advice I read many years ago (but never had occasion to use) for playing records like these was to use cactus spines as needles, so that the cactus spine would wear out instead of the record, and you would just change needles after each record.

Most people use soft steal needles as apposed to the “tungstone” needles, and while cactus needles can be good for some of the more obscure delicate records, they’re not quite as loud as soft steal

Unfortunately as of right now, my 1918 Brunswick Ultona is the only phonograph I own, but I do agree a brighter sound would improve the quality tenfold.
