Our family grew up in Gloster and many of our ancestors found their resting place in the area. The “W” in Arthur’s middle name stands for Winston; I wrote a research paper about him long ago. You did a great job! Thank you.

@exploringthesouth975 I'm not a man, and I grew up there. You're talking about a town that takes 10mins to drive through, and averages only a few murders per year. It's your typical rual, poor, southern town. Just because some stupid little rapper got shot( like they all do) doesn't make it "dangerous town". Of course you have(certain) goofy locals trying to hype it up, because they don't get much attention out there. Maybe you're not well traveled, maybe you've never been to places that are actually dangerous, idk, but it's not a good look to get offended when someone who's actually from there corrects your content.
@exploringthesouth9752 күн бұрын
Not offended at all. I expect critiques and comments. Very understandable defending where you are from. I do my research. I can only go by what the stats are telling me. And the stats are not good for this town. That is the reason for sending you a stat link. But you are from there and think different. We can agree to disagree.
@fieldsonfire2 күн бұрын
@exploringthesouth975 Fair enough, and I've read the stats. I'm not trying to defend it. It's definitely shi*hole with major problems. I just wouldn't consider it dangerous.

How I just got on UT and this BS came up. Stop falsely Opelousas for violence and views
@exploringthesouth9752 күн бұрын
Not sure what you are talking about. Stats don't lie. I am from Lafayette with family in Opelousas. Opelousas is not the best place to be right now. Your former police chief was not worried about fighting crime, he was caught up in a love triangle where him and his wife was shot by his mistress and all three are in law enforcement. Traffic lights in the downtown area are are terrible. The sensors do not work. You may sit at a red light for over a minute with no one in sight from any direction.

Most small towns in the south are violent. No jobs, drugs, and guns make for violence. Opelousas is the third oldest city in the state. Everything is under lock and key. Black-on-black crime is rampant in Opelousas. I live in Opelousas so I know.

I've been living in Beaumont for about a year and a half now and really like it. Both the town and people still have a real and authentic feel to them (unlike say Austin which has become an appalling shadow of it's former charming self). This video is unfortunately an accurate portrayal of downtown Beaumont, especially on weekends, as most business have abandoned it for more popular areas like the Westend and Dowlen Ave. My understanding is that every few years or so, the city attempts to revive the downtown which inevitably fails to gain much traction. And so the city center remains a mostly well-preserved but empty landscape. Overall crime statistics for Beaumont are quite high, which are somewhat misleading. A few pockets are extremely dangerous, which negatively impacts city wide statistics as a whole. But just as some areas have high crime, other areas have low crime.

Appreciate your comments about downtown and your comments about Austin (the new California). Will be headed that way soon.

It was originally a town built on a railroad line. The hill he was going down on Main Street used to have a depot on the rigth. The plywood plant (Georgia Pacific) shut down and there was no need for the railroad after that. Well, a little deeper than that, but there was a railroad there before.
