This is so helpful; thank you. I am the same way; I like to get straight to the point/math concept and my children learn better that way. TGATB has gorgeous artwork for sure and maybe someone who has a child who needs the busy work to internalize a concept would benefit from it. A lot of co-ops I know use TGATB. At home we do the very simple and affordable clean-cut Spectrum curriculum for some subjects. I’ll have to check out Math-U-See.

Do you have any videos or social media platform that shows “a day in the life” of your day? I’m sure every day is different, but I’m so visual. I’d love to see what a day looks like of unschooling for you. Thanks

I've been balking at unschooling for years because I just didn't understand it but having a seemingly unfocused 17 year old, it's thwarted me on a desperate search for a different way because he is a different learner. All that to say that this podcast was so eye-opening for me!!! Thank you so much for making unschooling plain!

My little boy is 9 and starting 4th/5th grade because I incorporate things from both grades into his curriculum. I find as he's getting older, I feel like I'm not giving him enough work to do, he gets grumpy and is constantly trying to "barter" with me on how much work, how many more pages... etc, and it becomes a struggle, then he shuts down and I can tell that he's no longer listening or learning anything and I end up stopping because I'm tired of the arguing. He has never gone to public school, and he knows what is expected of him, yet, he's pushing the boundaries, that I feel overwhelmed. Any advice?
@BethPavlik
@BethPavlik 8 күн бұрын
That's tough. My advice is to let him know that the work has to be done, but if he'd like to do it in a different way, you guys can talk about it. I always have my kids do one subject with me and then take a break (because I have four kids to teach and they all do different things); that way they aren't sitting for too long. I also sometimes set a timer and tell them that even if we aren't finished with our lesson at that time, we can quit for the day. I'll also break the lesson down into smaller chunks so that they can see, hey, you did that chunk, I think you can do one more. Oh look, we did that chunk, we only have one more to go! And then lots of hugs when it's done and a nice break for them. :)

I have four kiddos that are 9, 7, 5 and 3 and my three year old just dropped his afternoon nap this summer and I’ve been so nervous about not having that afternoon quiet time with my older kids, now that he’ll be awake, once school starts soon! I wish I would have been unschooled as a child. I did miss a lot of school and ditched. I used this time to walk around town and watch cartoons. It would have been easier if my parents would have been on board. My dad was such an unreasonable guy. He told me I could not drop out and needed to get a diploma. What was he thinking.

To be honest, I think a lot of the people who are participating in unschooling don't seem to understand the learning part. I am a tutor and I'm also a special needs tutor ESE. I cannot tell you how many children I have come across that were byproducts of unschooling that were allowed to develop massive gaps in their knowledge. I think in concept it's great!! However, I think it's more appropriate actually for your Juniors and seniors who are getting ready to go into the workplace who have already learned what they needed to have academic skill wise but do need experience and exposure to the world to know what they like and do not. I am not a huge fan of traditional public Schools by any stretch however the unschooling movement has become dangerous as it is not at all being facilitated in the correct manner. I cannot tell you how many parents I ran into who have told me things like "My child learning how to read would be traumatic for them." It's kind of a dumpster fire education at the moment but hopefully we can pull through and reach each other with empathy and kindness. Also, There is a group of students who have exceptional needs who may not be the best fit for end schooling and yet we see parents attempting it and then parents kind of get in over their heads. I think the concept is great. I personally prefer traditional homeschool. I will absolutely tell you that traditional homeschool does a fantastic job!!!!!!

Just found you today and while i find most of what you said to be great, you did make me cringe a bit with the "when are we going to use this in real life" point. It's not you, btw - it's whenever i hear this point. I'm a science and healthcare person and i wanna cry in biology major all the time when i see people do very basic stuff incorrectly. One example, every year a story hits the news about someone clearing out a Walmart or McDonald's because they mixed ammonia or some other chemical with bleach. My mom and my MIL used to do this as well but couldn't figure out why they were coughing and had to run out of the kitchen. It's very easy to make a deadly gas when you mix things with bleach. Yet i hear all the time, when am i going to use chemistry? It's under your kitchen cabinets, it's in your medicines, it's everywhere all the time. Another example is i constantly see people recommend mixing vinegar and baking soda to use as a cleaner. But if you know basic chemistry you know that you've just neutralized those chemicals and from a disinfectant standpoint. But your point is taken - one of the biggest downfalls of education, imo, is that teachers generally fail to teach kids application so that they care to learn the subject.

As it relates to the CC Foundations program, it does cover 7 subjects in respect to memory work which is great for students just starting, ages 4-7ish. However, I discovered it was not a full curriculum and that I needed to supplement for each subject that I planned on teaching my son as we were entering 3rd grade and on (around 7 or 8). It was made clear I would need to supplement for math and English, but it was not made clear with all the other subjects such as Latin, geography, history, and science. In addition , CC does not offer their own curriculum for these subjects so I either had to go with their recommendations such as Story of the World or research my own curriculum.

Sorry, I accidentally hit send before I was done. Anyways, researching curriculums was not a problem, that’s what we homeschoolers do! It was trying to coordinate each subject with that years cycle in CC, in addition to that weeks memory work. I ultimately ended up purchasing lesson plans from a seller on etsy in addition to the required books for those lesson plans which got quite pricey since I was also paying $1,500 for being in community in 23-24 (we were in both Foundations and Essentials). Additionally, CC did not provide songs for a lot of the subjects. This made community challenging for my son since he likes to use the same song once he has it memorized. As a result of CC not providing all of the songs across all of the 7 subjects, tutors were required to find their own songs for community days and I found the inconsistency from classroom to classroom and from year to year difficult to navigate and in some ways wasted time. All that being said, I do enjoy CC’s approach to memory work and we still employ it at home as it fits into our schedule. However, I ultimately chose not to continue with community for these reasons. Can you tell me if I would find similar issues with Claritas?

I'm late to this video, but I wanted to say something about his comment on being "unrealistically concerned" about dangers. I feel that it also really depends on where you live. I live an hour south of Seattle WA, and belive me, the dangers are real. There was just a man here in our school district (thankfully we homeschool) that was trying to grab kids on their way to school in the morning. He was never caught. We have registered offenders that live a block to a couple blocks away in almost every direction. And whenever we go to a park we have to keep an eagle eye out for needles. People have tried to grab children right from their parents in store parking lots, and even in the middle of stores around here. I wish my child could have the freedom I had as a child, but there is no way. Not around here, anyway. And that's a very sad thing, indeed.

I’m curious how best to introduce them to things for them to be curious about. This topic seems reasonable but seems like they should still be led to different topics. How would they know they’re interested in learning rhetoric or logic or government or electrical circuits or medicine? Those things don’t just come up in the play room so I don’t totally understand the child led concept.

I am a certified teacher and I create educational modules for homeschoolers. I have already been taking this approach even when I thought of the public schools. I no longer teach in the public schools but create lessons for those who are homeschooling their children so the parents can be in control of their child's learning. The key is to think outside the box where the parent or teacher is the guide on the side rather than the sage on the stage. I am a musician, writer, and producer so I use these skills I have in these areas to produce highly engaging materials. My approach is very media oriented. I own a tech and media company as well. I think we should connect because I have resources that would help with this viewpoint and philosophy of education. Contact me if you like or check out my content. I do believe that kids should be able to focus on what they want to learn the most so that they can create a career around this eventually. Some of the most successful people in high fields of industry are self-taught as well.. it is important to teach kids how to make sure the information they find is truthful because there's a lot of false information out there. Keeping this in mind with the unschooling idea is the ideal marriage of two schools of thought. [email protected]

I'm completely sold on the idea of homeschooling my children but I'm worried I won't have enough knowledge to guide them properly.
