I’ve run from a gun and I’m here to write this (I’ve had 3 guns and 2 knives pulled on me, I shite you not) - the reason you can turn and flee (if you have space) is because you determine when you go/when the race starts and the attacker must react, so yes there is turning time, but there is reaction time as well.

It went down like a lot of these videos. This is happening in Aus a lot lately, so sad and insane😢.

It is the Phalanx, that's the Ancient Greek formation. The same under over attack motion was used with the Romans, with the Scutum shield. That was a better shield with it's curvature that protected more of the body, but also allowed more angles of attack than the huge Greek Hoplan shield.

When I first started training some knife defense , the mantra was " Don't do that because an experienced knife expert will just....." . Then I met an actual experienced knife expert . I asked him if he had seen any real knife fights. He said never. But then he said "But I have seen lots of people after they'd been stabbed . Because if they know what they are doing , you will never see the knife . It's the rest you need to train for." Exactly what you are saying here Yes, they WILL hold it like an ice pick sometimes. And use way more power than needed. I've heard for decades not the use something like the X block , because somebody will just trap and draw cut . Again , if they can do that , I'm already dead . When we pressure test with dummy knives or giant markers at full power , I use versions of X blocks all the time , as a shield. It works for me so I don't care . I teach my students that this is what works for me , they'll have to decide themselves . Priority one is shut off the computer if you can't get away .

Going to add... the many Thugs that have been to Prison.. when they get out, they tend to carry Hidden razor Blades, and or shanks. At one time I was dealing with such a dude... and he went to put his hands behind his back.. and I knew he was about to draw a razor blade. I was smart enough to keep my distance, and eventually walked away... without incident. One other thing to do, if you get into a bladed fight... is to try to kick the attackers wristbone, or inner / outer arm. This is often far more safe of a move, than trying to do the same, with your arms. Its also far less expected. The issue is that if you are not skilled with your legs... or have very slow leg acceleration... then this might not be a good option. Also, be aware of, and use the environment to your best advantages. Maybe there is a stick or rock nearby, that you could make your way towards. Anything you could pick up, acts as a projectile, and or force multiplier + gained distance... and maybe even act as a protective shield too.

The KZfaq "Armchair Violence" channel did a similar video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i81xh7yqpqvQfYE.html If you haven't watched it, you should because there was completely different conclusions. The Armchair Violence guy categorized the knife attacks into different outcomes and tactics, and the two best options, by far, were "grabbing an improvied weapon" and "running away". I would love to see you two discuss your findings in a video and debating your conclusions.

The knife problem in the UK is down to gang culture mostly. We don't generally have guns here so these gangsters who "need" some protection carry knives. I've seen lads with other things too, like koshes (expandable batons). A lot of the time when a fight kicks off, people just grab improvised weapons like bottles, bricks and just blunt things to strike with.

The shirt cant block stabs, only cuts and only a little bit. its not a real shield. knife forward shirt back is making it so the stabs are coming at you towards the inside of your arms, rather than the outside. like how a lead hand hook goes in the middle of body but the rear hand hook comes from outside in, over the shoulder.

Most cops in the UK do not carry guns. Also they dont seem to have a lot of respect or power. they tend from the videos ive seen to be very passive. Theyre more like counselors. The armed police are separate from the average cop. then above the armed police is like swat and stuff, whatever theyre called in the UK. I could be off base, but this is what ive gathered from violent videos ive seen from there.

On the topic of the British police force. Apart from Northern Ireland, most officers are unarmed. All of them carry pepper spray. Some of them are allowed to carry tasers. I think they have to do a special course in order to carry one. Then we have the armed response units. In order to become a armed officer, you have to complete your 2 year probation period. Then you can apply do the training to become an armed officer. Over in Northern Ireland, because of 'The Troubles", all police officers are required to be armed. They can even keep their service pistol when off duty

I'm curious why more people don't use the matador defense. Someone showed me that you can take your defending hand and twist one side of a jacket sleeve and hold the corner of the jacket with just the finger tips of your knife hand. This essentially hangs a big cloth shield in front of you. It could catch the blade, but I can also be used when the opponent rushes in; you swing the open jacket at their face to block their vision/make them defend, then go for a finish.

Really good analysis piece but just so you know, most beat cops in the UK in Ireland do not Carry firearms. Also, there was a majpr riot in play following the murder of 3 young children also, those guys might have beem just security - Either way due to what was going on, they may have been content just to secure their area of responsibility. I agree with regard to neutrslising threats though - Not so long ago armed police here in Ireland shot a guy that went on the rampage with a Meat cleaver. (Thankfully they got him before he seriously hurt anyone)

I really appreciated your thoughts. And I agree with the problem with the "just run" idea. I spent ten years as a bouncer, ten years as a paramedic in a predominately urban environment, and a few years in executive protection. The Gracie/Gym Rat, "just run" is just silly. I've trained for my entire life and I'm a shade over 50. I started Judo and TKD at 8. Competitive boxing and wrestling at 11 and 9. I've trained in everything you can think of Savate, Kali, Muay Thai, several forms of Karate and Kung Fu. Blue Belt in BJJ and Purple in submission wrestling. Black Belts in Kempo and Tang Soo Do. I agreed with everything you said, it well thought out. I made a small purchase at your store since this much needed video will d3m0n3d!

Thank you. Great ( not great) to see these. Very clear, attack to completely incapacitate at 200 percent or get away. Accept you’ll probably get cut. And, seems also, just don’t get in the fight! The guy on the train used kicks with some effect. Maybe you could explore that a bit? Of course that opens one to a greater chance of falling, don’t high kick, but I really just don’t know.

18:38 I agree that when you are in a closed space like a subway running is useless, but thats not the case when you are in an open space with some distance between you and the attacker and you can see that he is a bit overweight and you are an insanely trained runner running is the right answer. Its very situation dependent.
