The spikes look like spheres in volume view because they're 4D cones. The same way that a 3D cone is a circle extended by a perpendicular line segment, narrowing from the wide end to the pointy end, a 4D cone is a sphere extended along a perpendicular line segment.

the step from 4d to 5d is at least as difficult than 3d to 4d. in the tesseract level. you track surface was the tesseract which is the typical object people show when they want to symbolize a 4D world, but now in 5d this is no longer an object, but just the surface of an object. thats why you could hit the ball out of the track

Mostly it's probably just the complexity of the models and size of the textures. You'll need a lot more stuff in the world unless you want it to look completely empty.

I think I have a pretty good intuition at what is happening. 3D golf is technically 2D that bends in 3D when there is a slope. If you were to view 3D golf from above, the seemingly random movements caused by gravity don't make much sense. If you look at the course from the side, the movement of the ball makes more sense but you can only tell where the ball is in one direction. Same with 4D golf. 4D golf happens in a 3D hole that bends in 4D. Volume view is technically the best way to see the course like how the best way to see a normal golf course is from above. You can only see the cause of the seemingly random movements from what we see as a pretty normal looking game of golf, but you can't tell where your ball is in the 3D course. That is so bizarre, I love it.
