I think for an emergency start the system is also used in the B52s till today. Of course the "cartridges" are bigger , the size of a thermos bottle.

Cordite is a British cylindrical propellant nearly the length of a cartridge case. It is not a general term for gunpowder. Most American powders were (and still are) short cylinders or tiny spheres, aka ball powder. Pet peeve of mine.

The Sea Griffins fitted to RAF target towing launches had Coffman starters fitted to them. When in public, starting both engines at the same time was an amusing trick, lots of noise and black smoke.Used to frighten those not in the know.

The Coffman Starter wasn't standard on F-4-F Wildcats. They used a ship's air connected air started on later models, the early Models used twin hand cranks that deck crew "wound them up" to start. I wasn't aware that F4F's of FM-2 ever used a Wright engine. The F4F's all use Pratt & Whitney "Wasp" engines rated at 1200HP "War Emergency" settings. All Curtis Helldivers DID only use Coffman starters. The F3F Grumman biplane fighters used Coffman starters on their Wright 1825 Cyclones (yes, the same engine without a turbo-supercharger, as B-17D's on used). Without a supercharger, they were rated first at 950 HP at takeoff, later at 1175 HP at takeoff. Pilots that flew F3F's knew a fighter that would MANUVER!!! I worked with a Navy pilot that flew F3F's, F4F''s and F6F's. He broke his nose snap-rolling an F3F!

The 'English Electric Canberra' bombers, used by Australia in the Vietnam War, were still started via a shotgun cartridge, albeit a much bigger one, and they were jet engines.

Magnificent. Started right up. Long live Pratt & Whitney! Edit: Oops. While most Wildcats ran the P & W R1830 Twin Wasp 14 cylinder engine, this variant most likely has the Wright R1820 Cyclone 9 cylinder. My Apologies. Long live Pratt & Whitney anyway!

Just because a technology is "old" does not mean it is out of date. I still shave with the straight razor my great grandfather game me and my father taught me to use. I read a steam locomotive will still out pull a diesel but the diesels are easier to start and other offsetting advantages.
