You probably know this, but why did Cessna chose to rout the fuel tank vents all the way to their opposite sides? Think I saw the lines exposed there. Thanks for being THE guru of Cardinals
@cardinalflyer
@cardinalflyer Ай бұрын
The question to ponder is what will happen if a Cardinal is parked on a side slope? If a tank is vented out its own wingtip, that wingtip could become the lowest point in the fuel system and let all the fuel out. But crossing the vents over the top they avoid that issue. It took them a couple of years to come to this conclusion... the early year or two didn't do it that way. This led to the POH requirement to always select the right tank when parking... those years were designed to have minimum risk in that setting.

Yes, along the way I upgraded from an STEC 60-2 to an STEC 3100. Great autopilot! Most (and all later) videos are recorded on a Drift Ghost camera, I have had several along the way. More details in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/neCdrKl_zdbZZ3U.html They were wired directly into my intercom with a resistor voltage divider I custom built. One also needs a good microphone, which is my Lightspeed headsets. Thanks for the kind words!

Two questions, where do you get weights like that and would you be interested in a little extra cash and make and sell the bracket? I have no idea how to weld. I've got an X300, hopefully not much difference between mine and your X370. Thought of one more question, do you use chains?
@cardinalflyer
@cardinalflyer 2 ай бұрын
These weights came from Craftsman across the years. I had a couple to start with and my father in law had a few more. I'm not sure where you'd get them now... farm auctions perhaps! These kinds of things are built to fit, so I'd hate to try to make one remotely from the target tractor. Plus there's shipping.. heavy stuff! I would probably help a friend with one, but don't plan to build to order. Perhaps you can find a retired mechanical engineer like me near you who would like a project! We are out there...

So, is this being done during prebuys? Are owners allowing this type of opening of their plane? Cardinals have made my short list. It would be a deal breaker if this can't be checked during prebuy.
@cardinalflyer
@cardinalflyer 6 ай бұрын
No, this is far too intrusive for the pre-buy process. And there is no need, as we can see the spar from the back seat with the ceiling panel removed to confirm that the AD was properly complied with. That should dispel all concerns with this item. I do pre-buys and have a Buyer's Assistance service, check out the process at cardinalinspections.com

I have a question for you. I have a 73 rg. The POH calls for the fuel pump to be left on after priming and turned off after the completion of the start. Is there variations in the POH starting procedure or have you adapted based on your experience?
@cardinalflyer
@cardinalflyer 6 ай бұрын
Yes, that is a strange thing about the POH starting procedure. If your mixture disks are in good shape it probably won't matter, but there's a risk of flooding if the boost pump is on. It says not to use it if warm... certainly true. Personally I only use the emergency pump for a few seconds, to prime when cold, then leave it off.

Great video, thanks. I'm looking at the 370. Do you find the snowblower clogs up much, like regular blowers do? Is a 2 stage blower? Thanks
@cardinalflyer
@cardinalflyer 6 ай бұрын
It is 2 stage, I find it clogs less often than others I have used, but in very wet snow anything will clog. Most often if it does clog I try to find some fresh snow to push in, often that blows out the clog. On those very wet days it can be annoying, but again I don't think any others are better. Some suggest using silicon spray or other products inside the chute to try to help, I've never found much difference from doing that. But I do try to keep it painted: sand, prime and paint when the chips build up.

The old aircraft spars don't look like yours. They where bare aluminium. We spent a day buffing the spar and it is nowhere as nice as yours. Doesn't the AD still ask you to prime the spare with zinc chromate. You only did the eddy current.

How may times are you going to make the same general comment? You are incorrect on several levels here... you would do well to not try to mislead people! Read my answer to your last comment for specific answers.
@Roboliver712
@Roboliver712 8 ай бұрын
The AD requires cleaning inspection for corrosion metal prep alidine eddy current then zinc chromate. It looks like your spar has already been treated and painted. So to tell pilots it's no big deal at 200 dollars is misleading them . Someone has spent alot of time on that spar.
@cardinalflyer
@cardinalflyer 8 ай бұрын
You seem to have misunderstood on several counts. The coatings preferred by the AD are epoxy primer and Corban... zinc chromate is an option but not preferred, and that's not the last coat. Also, Alodine is only required if not already done. At the time of this video my spar was still as original, although with Corban applied during one of the SEL stages. No one had spent time cleaning or alodining.... that's how it has been for some 50 some years. After this video I cleaned off the Corban, epoxy primed then re-applied Corban, along with paperwork as mentioned. As for misleading, I clearly said this was inspection was done of part of the overall process. In my case this was the only portion which required writing a check, but most other people won't be in a position to avoid hiring some of the work done or buying materials for the process. Check out my video about the headliner removal for more information on the overall process. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ncl4aLSH2p_WmH0.html As for whether it's a big deal, that will depend on what they find!
@Roboliver712
@Roboliver712 8 ай бұрын
I was sent your video from a pilot who now believes his AD inspection should only cost 200 dollars. His spar was in bad shape and required a lot of work. I told him you probably had the SIL done first leaving only the eddy current inspection.

Hey! Do you have any tips if the belt is super tight? Like at least an inch off and will not get around?
@cardinalflyer
@cardinalflyer 9 ай бұрын
Just make sure everything is seated properly and the best is seated fully in the pulleys and is run correctly. At times I have fussed with the idler pulley assembly to get it's motion correct... that arm could be stronger and can bend down. If you continue to have trouble you might ask your local JD Farm dealer to help, they often have an R&R service and see enough of them to know what it should be like.

Hello Keith, it seems the spar still has its anti corrosion paint on it. There was no need to remove it before inspection?
@cardinalflyer
@cardinalflyer 9 ай бұрын
Are you referring to the Corban or the Alodyne? The Alodyne stayed on through the whole process. There was no need to remove the CorBan for inspection, but I could not put the epoxy on over the CorBan. So the Corban needed to come off just to get the layers into the proper order.

So did you have to strip the Cor-Ban and then Zinc Chromate the spar before having to re-apply the CIC?
@cardinalflyer
@cardinalflyer 9 ай бұрын
You have to do what the AD says to do... please don't get your definitive technical requirements from KZfaq! Ultimately, the spar needs Alodyne (Bonderite), then Epoxy primer (or Zinc Chromate), then Corban. Personally I've seen too many zinc chromate surfaces which did not hold up well over multiple decades, so I stuck with the epoxy.

I'm a day away from doing this for the eddy current test and plan to use a small battery-powered driver, is there a reason you didn't?

The screws are short, so not many turns required. Many have a tiny head, and the angles can be tricky. A powered tool really would not save much time, and getting the torque correct is an important detail.

I have no clue why the 177 would have this AD, I understand the the 172-182 but the 177 doesn't not have the same moister issue as those planes nor the same spar placement, I wonder if there was a real reason for this AD or are they just playing it safe. See my point look how nice that spar is. no moister means no corrosion,

I have the same setup for my iPad Mini and it worked fine with one exception. In the Texas heat and desert west, especially at lower altitudes where cabin ambient temperature is a bit higher, the fans proved insufficient. I have an older one and the thing has FOUR fans! To remedy the direct sun and to stop fighting the heat issue enough so the fans could do their job I looked at solutions at both Sun ‘N Fun and Oshkosh. They have some solutions but at a high cost and they seemed flimsy for minimal benefit. I designed and built my own solution. Turns out a piece of small brass rod, a piano hinge and some fasteners worked great for building a movable sun shield frame covered with some inexpensive material. The end result is a physical cover blocking about ⅔ of the screen from direct sun. That was enough to allow the fans to keep the thing from overheating. You may say the Xnaught is enough, and for the most part, that proves true. However, it seems my need was more extreme on the yoke and this fixed the issue. It’s not bad looking for a home brew setup and the reason this was even possible is the Xnaught has ventilation holes I used for the fasteners. I was hesitant to drill holes for an experiment I didn’t know would work for the over high cost. Unfortunately, you’re right about the various unique sizing. My iPad died, it was not economical to repair, so I replaced it with the newer 11” iPad Air. Now not sure what I want to do about heat management. Using a generic/temporary solution untilI figure it out. I may wind up reverting to the Xnaught regardless of the price. I can say is the Xnaught is an excellent product and if that’s all you need, I certainly second your recommendation. And it allows for DIY solutions. Keep the videos coming. I check for them at least weekly.

Yes, I've found that adding weight helps me keep moving on my particular property. Chains would also work, but they tear up the driveway surface. Rubber chains work, but are a pain to get on. The bracket is doing very well, works out perfectly. I had an earlier one which was more challenging to get on and off and held less weight, so this was my second design. As a general rule, in aircraft maintenance including overhaul as well as routine maintenance, the bolt is never rotated except by hand to assist in engaging the first thread of the nut. This is because it is possible during the rotation of the bolt rather than the nut, to score circumferentially the shank of the bolt and so inflict a stress riser. In the case of cap bolts this rule cannot be complied with.
