I allways ask following question when I write action: Why are those characters the only one who fit into the conflict? If I can change the characters and the action still works, its bad.^^

Some of my favorite action scenes are not at all moving the plot foreward, but are all about the characters.^^

Words cannot describe the soothing, power of your voice, Kate, in delivering an over-the-top meditative session. I do these practices with you wherever i happen to be and I did this one just now while leaving Starbucks! Meditated leaning against a brick wall, totally oblivious to the cars passing by. Your videos always seem to pop up when I am most stressed (preparing for a trip to CT to visit family this weekend.) God Bless

Hi K.A, thank you for putting out these meditations. I wish knowing how I came to your channel but you’re so kind that I guess I’d been looking for mediations for writers. I like what these meditations do for me personally and as a writer. So, I thank you. 🙏 ❤ Please keep doing what you’re passionate about in these meditations. They bring me back home to myself and learn more about myself in the meditations. I’ve been struggling with creating and falling flat. Your meditations help me get back to being present. Lots of love and support ❤❤❤😊

Hearing you talk about this, talking about Buddhism, I was thinking about something I was looking into a few months to a year ago. Have you ever heard of the “Vinegar Tasters?” The allegory goes: Three wise men come around a jar of vinegar. The first one takes a scoop and tastes it. He goes “It’s sour! We need to form rules to ensure it tastes good!” The next man took a scoop and says “it’s bitter! If we want happiness, we should avoid it!” The third man takes a scoop and drinks it. He smiles. “It’s sweet!” “Sweet? How could you think it’s sweet!” “Because I knew what it was, and I came to expect it.” I think the issue is that we have not learned to disassociate. At our core, we are social creatures: we need other people. I go online, I get a sense of fulfillment; we can argue about how genuine it is, but people get their socialization from the internet, and if you can’t get that from the real world, a poor facsimile is “good enough.” In the real world, people get tired and retire from interactions, and you’re forced to walk away. On the internet, there’s always someone to take the place of someone getting offline. There’s no room for reflection if you don’t learn to pull back yourself. Sometimes introspection comes from silence. Other times, it comes from interactions. I enjoy exploring divergent thoughts to challenge my own viewpoints. Regardless, I think it each individual’s own journey. And for the record: I don’t get why people would drink vinegar. Drink some cider, or juice! Or water!

Speaking of British television, I noticed how good their dialogue was in Little Women (BBC) and North and South (bbc, 2004). I was blown away at how a tv series made two decades ago had such well done dialogue and pacing. It all drew the story forward and was layered with subtext. I highly recommend North and South by BBC! It's a well done, clean period drama.

The quote is new to me: "A man is rich by what he can live without." - Immanuel Kant. My favorite movie that touches on consumerism, minimalism, and breaking out of the matrix is "Fight Club". Some cool qoutes from the movie: "The things you own end up owning you." "It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything." "Man, I see in fight club the strongest and smartest men who've ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God d*mn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy sh*t we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very p*ssed off."

So, you're saying it's better to never change your characters' personalities and beliefs? Better for what? Sales? Because artistically, it's absolutely the other way around.

Agh, the outline!!! I literally put off writing for 2 decades, because when I went to my teacher asking for writing advice or resources, the only information she gave me was to "create a plan". I guess she meant an outline, but having been 13 years old, and experience with just a 1-dimentional planning, like to-do lists, I could not imagine cramping my ideas into one "to-do list". At that time I could not imagine that the teacher could be wrong, and I had no other idea where to look for information (times without internet in my country). I have decided then and there that writing books is not for me. I mean, how am I supposed to know how my book is going to end from the get-go? Not to mention, that teacher made it sound more like a chore and another assignment than something to be actually enjoyed. Then, 20 years later, I find Brendan Sanderson's writing classes and I am ready to give it another shot.

About "people can't see themselves, they need therapist to tell them what's happening". It's not true in some cases. If a person is very introspective, then they can see those moments and verbalize them even in the most rough plain variation, because those thoughts are hard to catch sometimes, and the version can change even in the next line. It's just an internal process of thinking. Therapists mostly give you another perspective, therefore a person's beliefs can shift over time even with new experience or friend's perspective. So if a character has a tendency to analyze themself, or they jump from one version to another, it can be realistic depiction of trying to find themself. People can info dump in real life too. But it has consequences, and people react accordingly. It can help with showing trust and patience in relationships, for example.

Hi, girls. First of all, I really love your podcast. It's not just the topics (which I love), but you two as well. It seems this year the episodes are less frequent compared to previous years. Did I miss an announcement saying that? It's totally okay if you have dialed it back, but I'd love to know so I can adjust my expectations.

I love all of Abbie’s videos so much I listen to them like music on repeat. I have always done some of the suggestions both sisters mentioned in this podcast. One reason I prefer GOT to the new series House of the Dragon is character development. I simply don’t care about the spinoff’s characters and can stop watching the show at anytime. The charters drive the plot, I know there objectives but I can’t connect to them emotionally like the characters in GOT. There’s no Tyrion or Starks to pull me to the story😔

Where are the differences? "and a peace sign tattoo on her left ankle from her freshman year in high school when she and her friends had all dared each other to get tattoos." Such a great, telling contrast to the rest of the description, whether the first version or the second, (which was otherwise better than the first). Now you mentioned that in the story, the tattoo doesn't matter, but something must matter. Using some quirky, unexpected difference that is relevant to the story would improve the second version even more, providing insight into the character AND raising questions in the reader's mind about the very relevance of the contrasting description. I am not a fan of tattoos, by the way, (though a couple of characters in my current work do have them,) so that's not what drew me to the line, but the quirk and contrast to the rest of the paragraph are definite hooks for me.

I absolutely LOVE this meditation. This is the 3rd time I have used it since I found it a couple of days ago, and each time, by its end, physically my whole body is vibrating and especially in my chest and forehead. Emotionally and mentally, I feel relaxed, refreshed, excited, confident, and peaceful after it also. Do you have any more meditations?

My female main character's journey is in a way mirroring my own and she eventually gets to fulfill the dreams and desires i currently can't fulfill. I've been putting off the deep dive into the character profile because i have to relive my own painful journey, but it seems like its a huge must to clarify the misbelief and aha moments.

On the idea of "satisfying your reader": there was a TV show some years ago that I loved the first season of. However, I was so satisfied with how that season ended that I've never cared to go watch any more. Continuing on with the characters feels like it would ruin the perfect ending I already got from the writers and performers.

I recently had to take a medical leave from a job I love and I don’t know if I’ll be able to return because my dissociative disorder became too debilitating to function. I have always judged my worth by performance, whether in work or school or what I can produce creatively, and having my progress slam to a halt like this has destroyed my self worth. I’m trying so hard to implement what you’ve said in this video. Thank you🫶🏻
