By the way, your painting was created by Samuel J. Reader of the The second Kansas State militia cavalry. The Regiment became isolated from the rest of the union forces, and was attacked by a brigade of confederate cavalry under Sydney Jackman. Jackman murdered a number of Kansas prisoners and captured the piece of artillery. This is known as the battle of the Mockbee farm.

The battle of Westport was not a three day battle. This is nonsense that was made up by the author, that everybody reads, Howard Monett. His book, action before Westport, is full of errors. He includes the findings of October 21 through October 23 and claims that constitutes the battle of Westport The battle on October 21, 1864 is actually the battle of the little blue. The battle of October 22 is the battle of big blue. The battle of October 23 is the battle of Westport. This battle consisted of fighting on two fronts. The divisions of James F Fagan and Joseph Shelby fought Kansas forces on the prairie south of Westport, Missouri. A couple of miles to the east the cavalry division from the department of Missouri under general Alfred Pleasanton attacked and carried Ford on the big blue river in the face of opposition by confederate cavalry under John Marmaduke. At the climax of the battle, the Kansas forces and the Missouri forces joined together, and drove the Confederates southward off the battlefield.

I'm sorry to hear about this. When I was in primary school we were taught that Europeans settlers, and later US military, were soley bad and the indian was innocent. We were quizzed about treaty violations and massacres the white man did towards Native Americans. Turns out the truth is not so one sided. The indians were just as bad (if not worse).

Hello. What herbicides do you use to ensure that the plantation is weedless? Is the active substance glyphosate?

Oftentimes that is the choice yes. However, in your own holding you can use any treatment, including yanking and bagging the weeds when you are scouting.

This what happens when people devalue human life. Trump is trying to the same with Jewish people. Bet they could have transported white people and made arrangements so that very few would have died.

I am from Eureka Kansas. We are 30 miles east of Eldorado. Grew up in Eldorado my whole life. The point I wanted to make with my comment is this. This oilfield they are talking about poured thousands and thousands of gallons of oil in the ground due to cable tool drilling. Take special note at the awesome green grass in the pictures. I want to celebrate the pioneers of oil production in Kansas. And to hell with people who sit in offices with nothing better to do than dream of ways to keep a boot on the necks of the working Kansan.

I just heard about this event in an audiobook, I’m surprised I hadn’t heard about it before with all the old west content I consume. Thank you for the video! It’s an amazing story of survival for those made it out alive. I’ll have to find a copy of that book.

My Great Uncle Hubert was able to do this (we called it “witching for water”) and it was not seen as weird or freaky whatsoever. He was a farmer and the whole family (also farmers) and other neighbouring farms all employed his help for decades to locate the best spot to dig their wells. He could even tell you how deep it was and he was never found to be wrong. I know it sounds far-fetched, but it’s just a fact He always only used a willow stick and I believe he told me it had to be fresh. When my parents bought some new land, they asked Uncle Hubert to come water witch and I was lucky enough to see this as it may have been his last time (but I am not totally sure, ) He was a very very old man by then and had nearly totally white eyes (he had developed severe cataracts ) and I remember thinking he looked kind of scary to my 11ish year old self, but he was such an incredibly kind and sweet man and so I really liked him. Anyhow, his near blindness did not stop him whatsoever. He walked around the whole property and found the very best spot to dig for the well. It was quite something to see and I will never forget it. Unfortunately, some people don’t believe in this kind of thing and mock it and trust me we could never explain it ourselves, it was just something Uncle Hubert was always able to do, and only one of his sons, and one grandson were able too apparently. I’m not sure if anyone else after that has been able to as Uncle Hubert and my own Grandparents have passed on years ago, but please believe that this really is a thing. My family were not at all hippy dippy types WHATSOEVER or flaky or anything like that. Just really good and kind, practical, salt of the Earth, hard-working farmers with fantastic community spirit. They were really respected and liked in their region. Anyhow, thanks for letting me share about my Great Uncle Hubert! 😊
