the visual of the spineless waiter has been lodged in my brain ever since i was a kid. absolutely amazing animation throughout the whole movie

I still remember my English Lit teacher about 14 years ago explaining how his visual style is supposed to fully represent the phrase "to bend over backwards".
@RuSosan7 ай бұрын
It's funny though, for a _spineless_ man he sure places himself between the gangster's guns and the dog without a single second thought and uses that "spinelessness" as a method of appeasing the crooks. Add to that his usually "closed eyes" look. He opens his eye only to observe the mood of the crime boss so I think the butler/waiter character is much more than the first glance... Edit: And just to be clear, this isn't me looking for an argument or something. I just think the characters in this movie have a lot of cool nuance hidden between the lines and this character in particular is a Grade-A example.

It’s been years. Remembered a lot of scenes but forgot this one even though i loved it. Btw not very many French people are overweight.

The waiter makes me anxious but it’s not necessarily a bad thing. I really like movies that evoke that kind of emotions. Some self observation 🤔☺️✨✨

Such a beautiful film. And I love that they get by with virtually zero dialogue - there's no language barrier, since we're all human. Well, not the dog, but you get the idea. Another gorgeous film that similarly tells a story almost completely bereft of dialogue is L'Iceberg (Belgium, 2005). It's not animated, but these two movies rank right up there for me alongside Chaplin's work, as far as telling a story purely visually, Check it! Much love from California USA. Thank you for posting this.
