Way to take responsibility for yourself. Most record store people are chancers that don’t care about condition. There has been a phenomenon here in Los Angeles over the last few years that hipster record stores put out high end records in shit shape and try and project the idea that it’s somehow more desirable because it’s been in the wars. This is of course moronic. When people try and resell the record, they’re shocked that they can’t recoup their investment. That said, unless your IQ doesn’t surpass your shoe size, every record in the world should have a sign over the door saying “buyer beware”. It’s your money and your responsibility. And to your claim that I’m a dick…Of course I’m a dick. I’ve worked at record stores all my life and owned one for the last 30 years. Hooray for me. I get to deal with record collectors all the time.

Oh God no....another list like this. The Modern Lovers are not a punk band, The Stooges are proto punk. The B 52's are not punk, BLONDIE IS NOT PUNK. Television is NOT punk Elvis Costello's only album that could remotely be called punk is This Years Model, The Soft Boys are not punk THE PRETENDERS ARE NOT PUNK......please you're killing me. Joan Jett is rock not punk. Never heard of the Body Snatchers. Surf Punks and Mojo Nixon I'm unfamiliar with. How you ever came up with Scream I don't know given your other choices but they are one of the greatest hardcore bands ever. Unfortunately its their debut, Still Screaming that is their punk masterpiece.

I wasn’t, but I know people who were, and they told me Blondie, Talking Heads and B-52s were just as punk as the Ramones and any of the other bands that played there. It was entire movement and there was a togetherness to it with all those bands. But hey, you’re entitled to your opinion. You can split hairs between punk and new wave. Punk is an attitude, not how hardcore something sounds.

@@giantorangerecords I was there at CBGB in 1975, have hosted radio shows on punk, have written about punk, have given punk lessons in my apartment etc. Those CBGB bands you mentioned all flew under the punk banner because punk was the next "big thing" Of course, Rolling Stone magazine and newspapers and the media all lumped them all into punk bands but THEIR MUSIC IS NOT PUNK!! If you want to say it's all punk attitude and the sound of the music doesn't count, then go ahead. Its your choice of course. Here is a part of an article I had posted on an audiophile site on the top 15 punk albums . Rocket to Russia: Released November 12, 1977. Reached #69 on the U.S. charts. Ramones formed in Forest Hills, Queens in 1974. There is a video on KZfaq of them playing at CBGB's that year and an argument breaks out over which song to play next. They already had their signature style in 1974 for God's sake! So please let's not have any more fighting over who was the first punk band, Ramones or Sex Pistols. I saw them play in 1975 and years later I wrote. " Saw them at CBGB's and was blown away by their power. What a wall of sound! What a rush! Would have loved to talk to them after their set but their leather jackets gave me pause. The only other people who wore leather jackets at that time in the East Village were the Hell's Angels and I had already had an experience with one of them near their clubhouse on East 3rd Street. Not really a big deal, but after that I decided not to start up any conversations with them. So, my fear got the best of me and I missed an opportunity to talk to the greatest band in the world in the mid 70's. To this day I play their records and they remain one of my favorite bands." For most people who weren't around punk music and the Ramones at the outset, it is difficult to imagine the effect they had. Mary Harron interviewed them for the first issue of Punk magazine in January, 1976. This will give you some idea of what it was like. "When I first saw the Ramones I couldn't believe people were doing this. The dumb brattiness ‘Beat on the brat with a baseball bat.' There was this real cartoon element, and yet you're in a real place, you want to do something real, so you're in a situation where they could be real, they could be genuinely delinquent. It had an edge to it: they looked dumb-smart, smart-dumb." From the Ramones' press kit in June, 1975: " Their songs are brief, to the point, and every one a potential hit single...The Ramones all originate from Forest Hills and kids who grew up there become either musicians, degenerates or dentists. The Ramones are a little of each. Their sound is not unlike a fast drill on a rear molar." When their eponymous debut LP came out all my punk friends bought it and played it to death. Believe me, we had never heard anything like it. It was brutal and undeniable. Listening at stun levels we were in awe of its relentless buzzsaw power. In light of hardcore (the louder, faster, more aggressive music that came after punk and spawned slam dancing and stage diving) Ramones songs now seem almost mid-tempo. But I've read people at their live shows were literally holding onto their tables when they played--it was such a potent force coming at you. Choosing a best between the first three Ramones' albums has always been difficult for me. I must have heard them all fifty times and for this write-up I listened to all three twice again. And you know what? It’s still difficult. Their debut, Leave Home and Rocket To Russia all contain loads of great songs. How to pick just one? It would have been easy to pick their debut. That would have put everything neatly in chronological order, but this is not the 15 most important punk albums, it is the 15 best. There are two major differences that for me narrowed it down to just two. The mix on their first album is different from a more conventional one found on the others--Johnny's guitar is in the right channel and Dee Dee's bass is in the left. Some listeners might like this, others might not. It does have its perks. When I was giving punk lessons in my apartment, I could turn the knobs on my amp to isolate the two. The kids I was teaching loved hearing how skillful these two musicians were. Man, those guys could play! Let me tell you, hearing "I Don't Wanna Go Down To The Basement" like this was a joyful thing. Secondly, some of the best songs are faster and longer on the next two albums. So my two preferences narrowed it down to either Leave Home or Rocket To Russia. These are not 1 and 2 in my book; they are 1 and 1A. I would have chosen both of them, but decided in the end to pick only one album from each band. Actually, any of the first three LP's would make a fine choice on any best list.
 I nearly choked at the prospect of leaving off an album that contains "Glad To See You Go," "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment," "Carbona Not Glue," "Pinhead," "Commando" and "You Should Never have Opened That Door," but that's just what I did. Rocket To Russia has great songs too, leading off with "Cretin Hop" (what an attack they had!) Then there's the classic "Rockaway Beach" (which reached #66 on the U.S, charts), and "Sheena is a Punk Rocker" (which reached #81). Colin Abrahall, singer in the great British punk band G.B.H. has said that hearing "Sheena is a Punk Rocker" at age 15 on the radio was a huge influence in his life. But more on that when we come to G.B.H. "Locket Love" is a sweet little bubblegum song disguising a murder. "We're A Happy Family" has just about the wittiest, funniest, pop culture lyrics ever in a song and "Teenage Lobotomy" is not far behind. I think the album has just a smidge more power than Leave Home, there are fewer songs under two minutes and Johnny Ramone's signature lightning downstrokes unleashing pure punk power are better showcased. Rocket To Russia is my choice to start our quest for the top 15 punk LP's. Here are three songs for your listening pleasure:

Well, I understand your pain, but it's impossible to do anything other than visually grade large amounts of run of the mill vinyl. If you've been doing it for any amount of time, you can detect slight warps and major problems by sight, but the onus is on the buyer ultimately to check their purchases before you mosey up to the register and ask for your discount. That said, any reputable record store should allow returns on such items as obvious mistakes. Now if all you wanna do is bitch about how life is unfair(a common theme in record stores), I can't help you and no amount of advice is going to temper borderline personality disorder, but it never hurts to try.

@giantorangerecords 20 күн бұрын
Well Ken, I've bought a lot of records from a lot of record stores over the past 25 years. I'm just trying to educate people so they don't run into the same issues I've had. Some record stores do it right, but sadly many do not. If these were in the dollar bin and they were pretty messed up, that'd be one thing. It's the dollar bin. But it seems like you look down on and don't bother checking the condition of "run of the mill vinyl" that gets listed for, in this case, anywhere from $6 - $22. In this case there should be a very obvious note about it near the price tag. Who wants to spend $22 on an unplayable record that they won't take back that I cannot resell due to its poor condition? I wouldn't even give this away. Or who wants to spend $6 on a record that could break your stylus? That's not a good business practice. Again, I happened to be able to find The Ventures "Flights of Fantasy" on Discogs for the same price in much better condition, and I'm very happy with this record, but when I'm in a real record store that's not what's on my mind. I've learned to be more careful. The really good record stores will not put such junk out on the floor at all, or if they do, they will make a legible note of the condition being an issue. Don't assume that I ask for discounts, because I don't. I never said life was unfair, I said please don't sell me broken records or unplayable records. There's a not-so-subtle difference. I love to support small record stores, but many have let me down over the years. Even I can't spot everything when I'm browsing at record stores. The excitement of finding a record can hijack a record collector's brain at times. I'm not going to sit there with a flashlight and magnifying glass and scrutinize every record. That's the store's job. That's my opinion and I'm allowed to express it. I've been doing this record collecting thing for quite a while now.

I think I have an OG of that Amboy Dukes that I haven't gotten around to listening to after a pretty big haul. Thanks for the recommendations, I will def check them out online!

Emergency Third Rail Power Trip is a mindblowing album! I showed their follow up mini album Explosions From The Glass Palace on my last video. I came close to pushing the button on the RSD Gandalf… might still do! Great album! Great video pal. Subbed up. Cheers, Jack

Right on, it sure is Jack! Thanks for stopping by! "Explosions From the Glass Palace" is on my list, but I really prefer buying from record stores vs. Discogs, so I'll prob wait til I find a copy in the wild. Love your accent btw, and The Soft Boys are awesome too, strange alternate album cover art! Watching your video now.

@@VinylPiper I see your point, I never really gave that much thought. The only other American band I can think of that comes close to that territory is The Left Banke. Lots of keyboard wizardry, great vocals, melodies and lyrics.

The Gandalf is getting a general release on black vinyl. Buying RSD releases online right after RSD can be a mistake. The vast majority of RSD releases drop.

That’s great news! The whole point of me getting these on RSD was because they went for so much less than the going rate. But since I recorded this video the prices have gone way up!

@@giantorangerecords I wanted to get the Ramones 75 demos but the prices are too high right now. I have waited up to a year before the price dropped on a Bowie RSD release and a Sonics RSD release.

@@vinylrichie007 nice! That’s good strategy. I was jazzed about that Al Wilson album (RSD 2023) I showed in the B-Roll and that went from $28 to $11… I got that in November, and here it’s May and I still haven’t opened it yet. But yeah, that Ramones demos from this years RSD is on my list. Just gotta wait til the hype fades. I’ll have plenty to listen to in the meantime.

Yeah i have a UK copy of that Animals album, but i do have quite a few Kiwi pressings but then again i live in Melbourne so we have lots of New Zealanders and th heir albums too, love all that stuff. There is a great fiftieth anniversary pressing of Arthur woth a whole extra album. Picked up a great decca repressing of the first small faces album, i have as n OZ copy too, i have multiple copies of most smallfaces albums .take it easy mate

Right on, thanks for tuning in! That's cool how pressings from all parts of the world make it to different places over time. My only OG Small Faces is "Ogdens" with the circle sleeve and crazy clover fold out. I think my "There Are But Four Small Faces" might be a boot, but it's hard to tell. Good to know about that deluxe "Arthur." It was a high water mark album for The Kinks, though I love all their '60s stuff almost equally. And you know their outtakes from that era are probably as good as what made it on the albums. "The Great Lost Kinks Album" is proof of that.

Thanks for the kind words! I lived in Charleston for a long time, and my family still lives in Summerville, so when I go back to visit I usually stop in there. There are some other stores that are kinda cool, but they have let me down in a few ways that Monster never has. Yes, I love the psychedelic music and a lot of '60s music in general.

Right on! Glad you dig the sounds of the OTC. I've tried to lead many a horse to their water, but a lot of folks just don't get it. I'd never really thought to do a reaction video, but I've heard their music so many times for so many years it wouldn't be a first reaction, but I'd say I still feel some sort of positive or interesting reaction each time I listen. Their are many layers to The Olivia Tremor Control.
