Not a good place to hang that thermometer should have it at about 3 ft above the floor opposite of where you have the heater

You need a high quality down sleeping bag. I sleep in negative 15 comfortably with no heat. That's the ideal heat source that never fails you. Your own body heat. Save fuel. No risk of carbon monoxide. No risk of fire. When you wake up light your heater and stay in your bag until it warms up. Actually at negative 15 I put my down sleeping bag inside my Wiggys synthetic bag and I stay perfectly warm.

Mr. Rick, The difficulties you had are why I have spent the winter watching videos about pitching these springbar tents. They're all made pretty much the same way. And with all the notes I've taken, I'm certain I'll find my own way to make it harder than it needs to be. Thank you for being willing to huff and puff and struggle on camera. I made the right decision to get a 10 x 10 and not the 10 x 14. We really need realistic expectations. I'm new to camping. I just got my first canvas tent and it's helpful to see that huffing and puffing and forgetting to make sure which side is facing which and the temptation to cuss your own self are not unique to me. Edited to add: I bought a planar diesel heater because I can use kerosene in it and the 4kw unit will work well with my 10 x 10 tent AND I use an electric blanket. That means using electric sites or a battery bank but it's comfortable. I plan redundancy.

Great points. I'm looking into the diesel heater now but hadn't given any thought to the electric blankets. I love these canvas tents though and now I know to look for the door a little better. Try the Russian bear tent, UP-5. They are Amazing. I have the UP-2 and that one had a zipper leakage issue but their customer support is WAY above and beyond! The sizing chart they use is a tad off because my wife and I, on two cots pretty much took every ounce of space available with only a wood box between us for a table. They ARE great tents but after getting soaked twice it was a hard choice to go another route. Hopefully this tent will be roomy enough and keep us dry. The reason I mentioned the RBM tent is because of the 5 star rating And the customer support.

Thanks for the advice. I'll look into that tent. Mike has the 12'x12' tent and that may be better with two cots, especially if you add a table, the wood stove, a table, and two chairs. On bad weather days, you may like to be able to spread out and enjoy the inside of the tent more. The 10'x10' is perfect for me but I would really consider the 12'x12' tent, depending on what you put in the tent. Let me know if you have any questions. Rick

Similar to a ceiling fan effect, maybe if you hang a battery-operated fan at the top of your tent facing down. It would push the hot air down and circulate the air. I am also wondering what level of ventilation you had?
@campingwithmikenrickoutdoors

I have two small vents at the top of each end of the tent, plus I usually open a small section of a window to help with the ventilation. Both of these fans helped to distribute the air much better. Great advice though. Thanks, Rick

How do you control the temperature in the oven portion?
@campingwithmikenrickoutdoors
@campingwithmikenrickoutdoors 6 ай бұрын
Great question. The issue we had was getting the fire hot enough to cook the apple pie. Important Tip: Don't try cooking an apple pie in the oven. The temperature needed to be about 400 degrees F and we could never get it there and it about drove us out of the tent due to the heat. I now only cook things that need to be around 350 degrees, so increasing or decreasing the openings in the door and on the pipe is what's needed to increase or decrease the oxygen flow. The heat is all controlled by the stove. Let us know if you have any other questions. Rick

A few recommendations : 1) get an official Mr. Buddy Hose as they are supposed to be oil free! Also, get an “Amish Fan” to put on top of Heater !!! They require NO power - just the heat rising converts to voltage and spins the fan blade !! Changes the entire equation ! Lastly - cut a piece of “Reflectix” to attach somehow into the top of the tent ! Hope that helps

Glad to see you are working it out. You have me very curious so I did a bit of research. Impact drills simply hammer in a clockwise or counter-clockwise manner. Hammer drills on the other hand, hammer downward, assisting in drilling through concrete and possible even rock. Impact wrenches also hammer in a clockwise/counter clockwise action. So, it appears the hammer drill is the best option. However, when hitting large rocks, borders, or bedrock I doubt any of them would be much assistance. Then there are the large nail type tent stakes that you can really go to wailing on with a hand mall and are easier than hitting on a J stake. 😝 Most folks rave about them.
@campingwithmikenrickoutdoors
@campingwithmikenrickoutdoors 8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the information. I'll check out the hammer drill, but will make sure it has more power. The one problem I see with the tent screw method is that it does cost a lot more to buy the hammer drill over the cost of a rubber mallet, however, this is something I really want to test, as these cabin style tents have so many stakes. Hey Rick. Love the stove and I feel your pain. Things never go as smooth as you imagine them too. When you get your new rain cap arrestor I would attach three Small Stainless Steel D-Ring Tie Downs on the support legs of the rain cap. Then attach three stainless steel cables (1/16 or 3/32) a couple of feet long to those D rings...or use small chain. On the other end simply put on something like a keychain ring to tie the cordage to. That way you can use paracord or other cordage to stake out the chimney. You could even put small carabiners on the cordage end that will attach to the D-Rings. When attaching the cordage to the stake you can either use the aluminum slide adjusters or simply use a loop hitch (like a prussic knot) . Something a little more sophisticated but even better would be "tie down strap rings." They are a piece of flat stainless, bent at a 45 degree angle, with a small hole in one end and a larger hole in the other. The small end would go over the tent pole spike with the 45 facing up....do that before you attach the tent pole guy line. Then attach the tent guy line on top of that. The chimney guyline would go through the larger hole and using the tensioner you can tweak the tension and better align and keep the chimney stable. That way you would be attaching the chimney support line directly to the tent pole so that when the wind blows and moves the tent, everything moves together. If the guy line is attached to the ground the chimney may move a little with the tent but the guy won't...causing some pulling. I know, it is clear as mud. On Amazon search: Small Stainless Steel D-Ring Tie Downs (they are cheap) Cordage tensioner: Guyline Cord Adjuster Paracord Tensioner (also cheap) Tie Down Strap Rings: Dog River Tools Stainless Steel Multi-Purpose Tie Down Anchor Strapping Hooks (Get the small ones.....make certain to check the size so that the small hole fits nicely around the tent pole spike)

Hey Rick, I must say you are the most polite channel when it comes to reply responses. Everyone always wants to contribute and that is a great thing but some channels get a bit snarky and I can kind of understand why. I appreciate your humility. Now...my two cents, Lone Wold 902 just did a great video on wood stove. He is as expert as they come....having probably 15 or so stoves many of which are his design and brand. It is quite an in-depth video that covers a lot of things we generally don't think about. For instance, a woodstove height plays an important role in heating a tent. The closer to the ground then the lower the frost band will be at the bottom of the tent. Importantly too then, is how high your cot is off of the floor. A taller cot will keep you warmer, something like the Teton xl or xxl for instance. It is getting you up into the heated zone. Also, I see where someone mentioned the diesel heater....man, that is the only way to go. It sits outside and pumps dry heat right into the tent through a 3" or so ducted hose. There are two great advantages, one, propane produces 1.6 lbs of water for each pound of propane burned. Therefore, a 20# tank will introduce about 4 gallons of water into the tent. Think of turning over an almost full 5 gallon jerry can in your tent. That is a lot of water that also effects heat efficiency. If it is cold enough, even with heat, you will find a frost line in the tent as well as the discomfort of high humidity. Secondly, the diesel heater "sips" fuel. You could likely run it 24/7 on less than 3 gallons of diesel a week. They do however require a 12v power source... which is no problem if you have a solar generator and a few panels. Also note, when shopping for one make certain it can be set for higher altitudes....some don't. Disclainer* I do not own one but I have done my research and intend to put one in my camping trailer. A trailers central heat can eat through a 30# tank quick.

Awesome tips and comments. I'll check out Lone Wolf 902. Actually I already subscribe to him, so I'll start checking out his videos more. Do you have some recommendations on a diesel heater? Rick

As far as being polite, it can be a challenge at times and I have blocked a few people from ever seeing the channel again who were extremely toxic, but Mike and I are here to share our adventures, show people how we're learning, plus learn from others like yourself. Uploading quality videos may be the most important part of this business, but engaging with viewers is a close second. Rick

Looks like you have it figured out. That looks really comfortable. The fitted top sheet is the keystone....keeping stuff in place. I really like the idea of the comforter at the foot of the cot. Cold feet make for a lousy nights sleep. I was watching a video the other day that had a sweet pointer for tent camping. The guy purchased a couple of those cheap 100% wool military blankets and used them like carpet on the floor. A really nice comfy touch I think.

I love that tent. Very awesome. I have wondered why they did not go ahead and put an awning window on the other side. No biggy, I have just been wondering....cost savings I guess. I think you did the right thing going 12x12 particularly when using a stove. Great set up.

Thanks for the thumbs up. So, that was Mike with his 12'x12' tent and I bought the 10'x10' tent in October and used it on our fishing trip near Telluride about two weeks ago. Your comment on the 12x12 hits home a little because I was having issues with my tent getting to hot when I ran the wood stove. I'm currently working on some things on the Camp Chef Alpine stove to reduce the oxygen getting into the stove so I can control the heat better. I have about 10 camp videos from that trip that are going up soon (and it's the same Reservoir in the video where Mike put up his tent), plus I just put up a video of the trout catches from the trip. There were 18 trout catches and most of them were 19" browns. Here's the link to the video if you're interested. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ep9poZmryZauh6c.html Rick

@@campingwithmikenrickoutdoors This popped back up in my auto-play and I watched it all the way through again. I will definitely get this tent soon, I hope. Tell Mike to use a Sharpie and mark the bottom of the tent with "Front" on the two innermost quarters so that no matter what order he folds it, "Front" will be written on the top of the outer fold. Hope yall are well and still camping. Cheers!

It's hard to watch this video all that heavy breathing dude you are out of shape, but the tent is great I am thinking of getting the same tent

It's partly the 7700 feet in elevation and putting up a heavy tent by myself. I'll try to cut down on the breathing because it irritates me too. MIke

This would be so very cozy on cold winter nights. Some of the features it has seem great; I especially like the guy-line tensioners. About the only thing that would make it better would be to have TPU window coverings. At the end of the day though, I can't see myself pounding 18-20 stakes into frozen ground. Have you used it in a heavy snow fall yet? If so, how does it shed?

We have used these several times in extreme cold weather but not in heavy snow. I'm going to be doing a lot of winter camping this year in my Kodiak Canvas 10x10 tent so I'll make sure I set it up before a big snow storm to test it. I'll probably get the middle support pole for that trip. Also, besides Mike's 12'x12' cabin lodge tent, I have the 10'x14' Flexbow tent, and the 10'x10' cabin lodge tent. Both cabin lodge tents are stove ready and both Mike and I have wood stoves. Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick

It's 7000 feet plus being over weight. I can't help the elevation but I am working on the weight issue. Rick
