Will you be incubating any more meat chickens this year? How many in total meat chickens do you have? After processing them how long will this amount last you? How often through the year do you incubate and process meat chickens? Just curious...
@quackersplatfarm4 күн бұрын
I have 20 eggs in the incubator right now, so if all goes okay we'll have almost 40 chickens in the freezer. That's pretty typical for what we eat in a year. It's like 1 chicken for every week and a half. The roosters are 8lbs so we get 2 meals from them.
@user-sj4mg7hs8i3 күн бұрын
@@quackersplatfarm Wow!!! I know it is a lot of work involved ...but...think about all the money you are saving. Out here for a small chicken we are paying ...on a good day...$10-12 per chicken. I suppose you have to figure in fed...but..no processing fee...lol

Who designed the "Chicken Tractor"? Will there be more eggs hatched this summer? While watching I was wondering who was going to get pushed out first. So very cute. How long after they hatch do they start eating and drinking?
@quackersplatfarm18 күн бұрын
I had a general idea of what I needed and then my Dad turned my thoughts into the chicken tractor! We are actually starting a second batch of eggs in the morning! The chicks dont need to eat or drink right away, but we offered them food and water once they were all hatched.

I dont think theres an odor at all, but maybe I'm just used to it? Once we start scooping it out, there is an ammonia type odor.

@@quackersplatfarm I suppose why I asked was we live near the Laurel Race Track and on HOT day the ammonia smell is quite overwhelming. Questions: What are you going to do with the wool? Have you ever shear them? One of my favorite parts of this video is how you trained them to a whistle to come in at night. Has it always been one special person who whistles them in? Just wondering if someone else whistled them in would they respond. As always thank you for sharing.
@quackersplatfarmАй бұрын
I can't whistle so on rare occasions if I have to call them in myself, I have to loudly sing the tune. They aren't picky, thankfully! We had 2 sheep over the years that didn't shed, so we had to shear them for summer. It's harder than it looks! I saved up the wool and we finally had a use for it this year! We built an insulated bee hive and used the wool as insulation. It's not fancy wool for spinning, the 2 sheep that we collect wool from are a wool/hair mix, so alot of their wool has thicker straight hairs in it.
@user-sj4mg7hs8iАй бұрын
@@quackersplatfarm Sounds like a excellent use for the wool and I'm sure the bees appreciate it during those cold months.

Okay how did they get back in their pen? Did they do it on their own ...OR...did someone volunteer to corral them? Three acres is a pretty large area. I know you said they pretty much stay close to their pen. Do you have to keep an eye on them because of flying predators? They all are looking health.
@quackersplatfarmАй бұрын
So far they go back into the pen on their own near sunset and then we close their gate and get the sheep locked in the barn too. Flying predators are the biggest threat in daytime. I hope that with both parents nearby, the babies will be okay. Harold always watches the sky.
