They are great for wide open throttle but to drive and idle very much, they just aren’t practical

That’s what I’ve heard, throttle is too sensitive for cruising. This is a drag only truck for now anyways.

Check for vacuum leak
@HowertonPerformance14 күн бұрын
I believe the throttle blades need peened on the ends to lower the idle. It was running so rich that any adjustments I made would make no difference, otherwise I would suspect a vacuum leak.

Small block, yes, but that exhaust 🤔 no not for me the carb was the one to have a long time ago
@HowertonPerformance15 күн бұрын
Not our preferred exhaust either, but it’s what came with the truck when we traded, so it will have to do for now.

I've learned that when and if you get it just right. You have left a lot of hp on the table.

Looks like it is running good but once on the road this is a blower carb. It will be super hard to make it work smoothly on a non blower engine. It will not atomize very well without a blower. Try a tunnel ram Victor Jr intake.
@HowertonPerformance20 күн бұрын
It’s a drag only truck, so we will just be driving in pits and then wide open on the track. If it was a cruiser, I would probably change to something else. These carbs have been known to be good on NA motors though, so we are just trying to see how we like it.

I think you may need the kit that relocates the cable and the linkage to the other side of the carb. My friend had one of those on a 70 Olds Vista Cruiser 455 engine. Never could get it to run right with the linkage that you're using. I know just changing the linkage to the other side doesn't make much sense, period. But it made a world of difference in his car. He was using it simply to be different. Hardly anybody runs those anymore. It got such bad mpg that we tore it off and installed a Holley 750. I think it ran better with the 750 carb. Another thing is that it just pours fuel,a lot of fuel, possibly more than the engine can burn. It could wash the rings out if it's not tuned correctly, and you just drive it anyway.
@HowertonPerformance20 күн бұрын
We have the other linkage as well, but everyone that we have talked to said the bowl needs to be pointing front especially for drag racing. We have done some modifications to get the AFR in the correct range, but still are working to get it tuned just right. It was dumping WAY too much fuel at first and fouling plugs.
@franktraverso610521 күн бұрын
Well TomConner has the set up in what he says.We tried one of those beasts back when they first hit the market. Ide was tough the throat on that thing delivers a massive amount of fuel air,and getting it to mix and atomize correctly prior to delivery to cylinder requires a manifold that does just that. It worked best on a big block Chevy ran through a tunnel ram and velocity stack.
@HowertonPerformance20 күн бұрын
We might have to change to a higher rise intake, but we do have a 1” spacer under it at the moment. We have done some modifications to get the AFR where it needs to be, it was dumping way too much fuel to begin with and fouling plugs.
@skxj20 күн бұрын
A guy I knew had those carbs on a tunnel ram on a BBC when they were new to market and it ran great, I personally don't know much about them.
@jondahl317321 күн бұрын
Tuning one of those is the work of a lifetime.
@HowertonPerformance20 күн бұрын
It very simple operating, but also complex to tune. We have definitely had to do some research to figure it out.
@masterpah120 күн бұрын
Close enough. Lol.
@tomconner506721 күн бұрын
First thing is you need an intake with a tall open plenum like an Edelbrock Victor, or Victor Jr. or single carb tunnel ram, an MSD 6AL2 and a super high output ignition coil such as an MSD or Accel chevy shaft housing with the Chrysler/AMC cap for clearance, MSD Blaster 2 power tower coils, and a beastly set of Highly Insulated wires (Make sure #5 & #7 have plenty of space between them) A big cam and huge free flowing headers with unrestricted exhaust, and hotter plugs. The flap seals need to fully close over the racks. Remember that’s a 930 CFM gas hydrant, if you have it on a stock 350 you’re asking the engine to do quite a bit of guzzling, make sure your port intake runners, manifold runners and intake valve diameters are as large as possible so you don’t have too much intake air velocity, the larger the open plenum and slower the flow at the base of the carb, the more accurate the fuel mixture and carb venturi will match the engine’s needs, balls out they are a hard charging Carburetor try getting two of them on a tunnel ram to work! My best advice, put it on the suck side of a blower or turbo for the best results. Also, I made new backfire flappers out of a sheet of Teflon Film, and then when I messed them up accidentally, I cast a set out of High Temp RTV Silicone after tracing them onto a plastic cutting board, using a routing base on a dremel to the right depth and added fiber latch hook mesh in the center that I cut out for reinforcement. Less likely to burn especially when heated during curing time, i used spray wax for a release agent on the mold,wax paper and an Iron on low to mash it into the recesses, then used a light bulb about 10” away. This was before carbon fiber and Kevlar were readily available
@HowertonPerformance20 күн бұрын
We have the ignition to run it, but might have to switch over to a higher rise intake. We have a 1” spacer under it to help out with atomization though. I’ve heard of them running good on smaller engines, but with modifications. Since they are variable Venturi, they will only draw as much air/fuel as the motor demands, up to a certain point at least. We have done a few modifications to get AFR where it needs to be on this 408. Good idea on the backfire flaps though!

I was a regular at Predator East in Lakewood N.J. Does it run rich at idle? Does it have the street Idle circuit? The only way to tailor the fuel is through the nozzle bar, (by replacing it with a leaner or richer one) the accelerator pump, and Idle circuit ( I drilled the orifices plugged the access holes then drilled and tapped the metering screw hole.
@HowertonPerformance20 күн бұрын
It does not have the idle circuit. It was running super rich through the whole range h til we epoxied a few of the holes in the spray bar. We have learned at lot since first getting it.

Sometimes (like with many temp sensors to trigger electric fans) you need to trigger sone relays with a ground trigger rather than a 12v switch. You should provide an explanation of this in your video as well as in your kit instructions. Otherwise really good video.
@HowertonPerformanceАй бұрын
We have built lots of kits that are ground trigger for use with ECUs or ground switches. Most of the time if someone is needing something like that they will contact us. But yes, we should probably explain that on our website before people order.
