So players and DMs can only create characters when inside a campaign? You can't just do it in downtime when you are not playing?

You can do it whenever you like, but the server has to be up and the proper world currently loaded. It doesn't have to be during a game session, but the server has to be live to access it, yes. This could be as simple as the server is hosted in the cloud, and is always accessible, or if the DM is self-hosting they can just leave the app open. No different than opening a game on R20 to create a character in a game there.

Everything in the video should still be accurate, it's just missing some of the newer features. I'd love to remake the class tutorials at some point, but the 5e system is currently getting a whirlwind of big updates, so I'm sort of waiting until most of the new features are implemented before I put all the effort into a big update video. I don't want to make a new one and then have it become immediately outdated

It does! If a player targets an enemy with an ally flanking then it will automatically apply off balance

Yes! Make sure your game system is updated and you will have the ability to create Race item types. They have advancements similar to Classes and Backgrounds where you can drop individual race features in.

Though your videos are few i find them to be somewhat helpful. However due to my version of Foundry not matching yours, I find it really hard to figure out how to make things. This is just a suggestion, but you might want to make new videos explaining how to do some of the things you have gone over in the past with the new formats they use. I understand if you don't want to, I have just been having a real hard time figuring it out and can't seem to find anyone who can help. Other then that, keep up the good work.

I definitely plan to make newer videos with updated info for things that have fallen out of date, I just have to pick my timing wisely. The dnd5e system especially is getting huge updates a lot more frequently, so I don't want to make a new video right away only to have to make another one a few weeks later. I'm glad you are still finding them helpful! What are some things that you have found difficult to understand? Any specific things that are out of date that made things hard to learn?

Yep! I wouldn't update those if it weren't applicable - they introduced this function in V11 and it will continue to work uh... presumably forever. But I updated the thumbnail/title to get people who are picking up Foundry starting with V12 to check it out.

I'm trying to add a custom class that uses spell points which is a unique type of spellcasting. They don't use any of the spell progression being used by other classes. The spell points do progress as the character levels, would I be able to handle that as a feature, kinda like Ki points? The player can also choose the spell casting ability they want for their caster, would a feature be capable of handling that as well?

You might be able to set something up like that with limited uses on another item totally, but I think there has been a module to try and get spell points working in the past. I would pop into the discord and ask around!

Make sure you update the dnd5e system! 11.315 is the Foundry version but the dnd system is updated seprately in the app. Click on "Game Systems" on your setup screen. Also make sure you don't have any modules enabled that might be changing the character sheet.

There semes to be a bug with the default sheet... if you have multple "sheet Modules". If you are on any non "new" sheet, and switch to the new one... you cant swich back (to say a Tidy 5e sheet) Andone got an idea on how to fix this?

I can't seem to figure out the simplest of things man. When I try to implement a scale value in a damage formula (while referencing the right class) I just get this error when I try to roll: "a die term must have a numeric number of faces". Everything is specified in the advancement... ugh

The compendiums come with everything that Wizards of the Coast allows to be distributed for free - the System Reference Document or SRD. Nothing else is allowed to be legally distributed without paying for it, that's WOTC's rule.

This is incredibly useful! Question, is there any way to download the .json files So i can import them to another server I run? I used to use Compendium2Module to do so, but it doesn't support the native compendium folders like this new method does.

Well the good news is this new method is MAKING a module for you already - so if you go into your data folder for Foundry you should be able to find the module containing all the shared compendiums! And you can just take that whole folder and dump it into another Foundry data folder instead to transfer it over.

Hi! Thank you for the super helpful guide. Do you have any idea why the background area doesn't automatically add the background feature? It is empty on one of my PC's, but if I try to bring the background or the feature (acolyte), it doesn't add it in the field. I'm talking about the first tab, under race and subrace - section. It tells me player character is allowed to have only one background - but I can't edit, remove it anywhere. Super annoying! All the other character sheets are working well in two of my games.

Sounds like there is some lingering data on that particular character sheet that's causing issues - might've been a migration issue when the world originally updated. I'm not sure how to fix it specifically, but if you pop into the Foundry Discord and ask in the #dnd5e channel I would bet someone knows how to fix!

I intend to watch the video when I have the time to, but right now I'm just putting it in my watch later list That said, is the function of the Darkness spell covered in this video? If not, I'll look at what's covered here and see if I can use any of the dynamic lighting to create a workaround for the spell

Sorry for the long wait for reply! This video does not cover the Darkness spell because it's kind of a hassle to implement - you would basically need a movable sphere of walls but somehow also while inside all tokens are blinded. I think there are some modules out there that have tried this but don't know if any succeeded. The short answer for the best way to do Dakrness is, IMO, either to just use a regular AOE template (or maybe a drawing) and ask players to do their best to imagine, or use a light with a black fill and do the same. Best to rely on good old tabletop imagination for the time being.

You can create folders in a game world's compendiums tab and drag the shared compendiums into them, and that world will remember the folder structure even through a disable/reenable of the module, but I'm not actually sure if you can set that folder structure in the module itself. Worth asking in the Discord for sure

They did remove the resources - but only sort of. If you had custom resources on the legacy sheet, they should migrate into the "favorites" section on the new one as a holdover. If you don't see them, maybe set the sheet BACK to legacy sheet and add them in again. Those blank custom boxes are removed, but the functionality still exists. You can create any item type (feature, equipment, etc) and give that item Limited Uses. This allows you to keep track of a resource exactly the way the old boxes worked, but also allows you to name the resource, give it an icon, and do all sorts of other things with macros and effects etc etc (if you want) or just can be used to track like you did before, but now you can have way more than just 3. You can then just add the item to the Favorites bar so its available on every tab of the sheet. It might sound annoying to have the extra step of creating an item first but it's the more "proper" way to do things, the custom resource boxes were originally added because it was assumed that characters wouldn't need to track more than 3 things (lol). Charges on items didn't always exist so that was the way to do it, but then once they were added to items the boxes became a little redundant, because with class advancement it made much more sense to have tracked resourced be a part of the actual class feature (like Channel Divinity, etc etc).

You can do it but with a bit of CSS - no button to do it in the UI. Folks in the Discord have walked people through it before, it's not terribly complicated if you're interested

There used to be a key to hold to interact with the description pop out on the left when hovering a spell\feature\weapon\etc. How do I do this so I can scroll some of the longer descriptions without flooding chat or going into edit? It used to be 'x'.

It's super finnicky but I CAN confirm middle clicking on the tooltip will lock it and let you scroll, but it is really tough. Tooltips for things like skill checks disappear like instantly but the ones for items linger for a few moments to let you click on them. They definitely need work@@CarnivorousMeat

I didn't make these ones, but the maps are made with the Forgotten Adventures assets! They are awesome, and free to use (until you want to sell the maps you make with them, etc).

I would like to switch to PF2E due to foundry support, 5e is proving to be a nightmare. However, I have no idea how to play PF2e. Where do I acquire the rules (Pdf) to learn to the rules to play this module. Also, I noticed it was going through a revamp, so what do I buy? any help would be appreciated. Cheers

Heyo! Welcome! So there's a few things to note: 1) All of the rules for PF2e can be read for free on Archives of Nethys: 2e.aonprd.com/ 2) PF2e is in the process of releasing a "remaster," which are new versions of the core books with rules that are 90% the same as before with some nice quality of life changes to the remaining 10%. Right I believe only half of the books are released for purchase, but you can purchase them (including a PDF) from Paizo's website. Be warned, their website is terrible, lol. If you wanna buy PDFs, I recommend the Player Core book, and then the GM Core if you want it. Be warned that Player Core is only about half the classes that currently exist, the rest coming out this summer in Player Core 2. 3) Archives of Nethys doesnt quite have the remastered rules up yet, but they will on March 16th I believe! Buying the Beginner Box on Foundry is also a great way to dip your toes in - I have introduced 2 groups with that and they loved it.

Has no one created a "additional 5e compendium" for the stuff that is not in the 5e srd. Don't tell me that this is not allowed. You cannot copyright game mechanics. You can create the rest of the content with non-copyrightable text. Solasta exists because of this, Pathfinder exists because of this. all of the OSR exists because of this. Adding things like the Tinkerer Class with (Alchemist, Gunslinger, Armorsmith, and Construct Smith) subclasses for example it would be custom third party material same as any other... Maybe I am using wrong search parameters?

Unfortunately this is not correct - the SRD is released under the creative commons license. Anything in the SRD as such can be reprinted, redistributed, used, etc etc within the parameters of CC. This is also why homebrew sources can create their own content that uses 5e-specific terms like "advantage" and whatnot - it's because that is SPECIFICALLY allowed to be used by WOTC. The rest of 5e is very much protected. The content couldn't be redisitributed legally via any source that hasn't been approved by WOTC, and even then WOTC sets the terms for HOW it can be distributed by those sources (which is why you have to pay for it literally everywhere and physical books don't translate to D&D Beyond and vice versa - WOTC dictates it is paid for in each location). Now, Foundry HAS only in the past few weeks come to a licensing agreement with WOTC. They are NOW allowed to sell official content, but they have to get around to making it first. But no one else would be allowed to just make a module full of all of the content and distribute it for free. (Obligatory "I am not a lawyer" disclaimer). Now, if someone were to create a class called the "gunsmith" or some such and had features that were identical to the artificer but did not use any of the written descriptive text (the text itself is the big sticking point for copyright law) would that be fine? Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. MAYBE. (Do not do this I am NOT encouraging anyone to do this). But everyone with a brain obviously understands that that's very much skirting the line, at best. Which means Foundry would likely have to shut it down (especially nowso that they ARE licensed).

@@alaustin.Fortunately you are wrong. And I do have half a brain, an whole one in fact... Your insults aside, you are 100% wrong. Copyright law doesn't work that way. Mechanics CANNOT be copyrighted. As long as it is not a cut-n-paste job. As long as you use your own words and do not use specific names taken from. i.e Tiny Hut, Floating Disk, Magnificent Mansion etc. Pathfinder is D&D 3.5, Every OSR game is Basic (OSRIC, OSE etc). The biggest example of what I am saying is Solasta Crown of the Magister, and its mods. WOTC backed Baldur's Gate. But not Solasta. They used the SRD. and added to it. If this was not ok, WOTC would have sent the Pinkertons to their door. In fact importing from D&D Beyond or pulling from a PDF, and using that on a cloud hosted server is way more grey area and sketchy than 3rd Party Community Content Module which is NOT skirting the law. We can see successful usages of the copyright boundaries throughout the entire table top gaming community and many others but gaming is the biggest. LOL also Words with Friends is Scrabble btw. Just watch stuff from around the OGL debacle time , listen to what the Rules Lawyer says he is an lawyer. Even the Legal Eagle guy got into it WOTC uses this themselves... halfling vs hobbit. WOTC is banking on people being to afraid to do it, its not illegal at all.

That still needs to be struck down out of an abundance of caution if nothing else. Sorry bout that. Secondly, I have seen this conversation go down like 10,000 times at this point hanging out in the support Discord. I won't argue with you about it, so if you want to go create everything and leave out just the proper nouns, feel free, and then feel free to email it to WOTC and show them how you're distributing it and see how they feel about it. They'll love it. Take it easy.

What about custom resources? Some modules - for example, the very popular Spell Points - and game features, such as keeping track of the number of arrows in a quiver if you play in a game that considers such minute details - require a resource to function properly, and yet i cant seem to find a place to create my own resources?

a follow up - i know i can switch between the legacy version and the newer one in order to create, view, and manipulate resource values, but i would *REALLY* rather not have to do that, especially since i run casters in gaes with sthe spell point variant rule quite often

@@puljicdanCustom resources are the only fields that didn't make the cut in the new sheet - but that's because their functionality exists inside of any other item. You can keep track of arrows by just adjusting the quantity of said arrow. You can even edit a ranged weapon (let's say Shortbow) to consume the ammunition. Edit the bow item, Details tab, set Resource Consumption to Ammunition, select the ammo you want it to use (both the weapon and the ammo need to be on the same character sheet for it to appear). The bow literally will not fire if you run out of ammo. If you are keeping track of some other arbitrary number, you can create any other item (features are items don't forget) and give it Limited Uses in its Details tab, including if it recharges on a rest. Same exact function but you just have to create an item first. Doing it this way also enables additional layers of functionality if people want them. If you want to be able to see the resources without going into another tab, you can add it to favorites. At that point it works nigh identically to the custom resources from before. Not sure what the modules will do to switch things up but I am sure they will find an elegant solution

@@alaustin. Now it looks like if you add a named resource in the legacy sheet they get appended to the favorites section with the tag "LR" (maybe Legacy Resource?) so it seems to be fixed, at least concerning the spell points module
