I did the US J1 visa summer '88. And went from Ireland to Wildwood, and worked the summer in Hunts Pier. I mainly ran the Wacky Shack near end of season.

I remember the summer of 88 like it was yesterday. I was 15. My family borrowed a friend’s conversion van and my mom, dad great aunt, me, my younger sister, newborn sister, my sister’s friend carrie,and my best friend Bucky all went to wildwood for a vacation in late July. My parents and great aunt stayed at the bal harbor with the baby and us kids got to stay at the conca d’or just steps from the beach. Appetite of destruction and hysteria were topping the billboard and the country was thriving. What I wouldn’t give to be right back there.

Very happy to see this! Its always great seeing rare Keystone Kops material! I wish there was footage of the interior, but this is the closest to getting that! On a side note, I have been working on a project named Kooky Trails and we have a character (named Sugar Kane) themed to the Keystone Kops dark ride! The thing with our project is that we like to make our characters loosely or fully themed to the many dark rides throughout history. Keystone Kops being one of them...

I remember the original Haunted House that was on one of the piers back in the late 1970s. I can’t remember which pier it was on, but it was a walk-through attraction that had live actors. It was a two-story house near the end of the pier. I remember one of the rooms was a bedroom scene with a corpse in a lavish bed that was covered with hundreds of rats. Most of the rats were fake, obviously, but they added several live ones to give it some authenticity. Doesn’t seem to be a lot of information online about this particular Haunted House.

Back in 1972 my dad found a baby turtle very close to that area and brought back to our apartment on 8th Ave across from Henfey Park. I have no idea why he took it off the beach! He put it in a large bowl of water on the kitchen table. The thing was dead by the next morning. I cried very hard because I felt so sorry for it.

This was the only ride that my mom took me on after turning 4 or 5. We always went on rides at night making this ride even scarier. Years later enjoyed taking my kids on it. Back the late 1950 & 60' s Hunt's pier had the best rides in Wildwood.

To think, Obummer was the new prez when all this was going on in Feb 2009. And our current prez was vice prez. The last time it operated was when Willy from Little Rock was prez in 1998. There's a whole generation who never got to ride this in Wildwood. They can now at Knoebel's but it's a new ride with new scenes. Knoebel's doesn't have the same vibe as Wildwood it's just an old amusement park in the woods in the middle of nowhere.
@robkrasinski62174 ай бұрын

You have a one of a kind piece of history. Do you still sell the figures and stuff that you handmake of Hunt's Pier stuff? i know Scott Hand would probably love to have this. He was a big Hunt's Pier fan as a kid in the 70's and early 80's. He has an ego problem though and blocked me from his private invite only Wildwoods facebook group as well as his personal page. Anthony Canzano did the same thing, block me from a similar boardwalk amusements facebook group when I tried to join and his personal page. I had tons of IM convos with those two about old amusements, etc. I visited Hunt's Pier in Aug 1982 and Aug 1983 and went through the Pirate Ship Skua.

That looks great! I remember going through the Skua pirate ship in the late 1970s when, I believe, the skull at the entrance was white. Do you have a replica of the Whacky Shack facade by any chance?
@funchase5 ай бұрын
The white skull and hand were originally used for both entrance and exit but because of the congestion, in 1983 they created a new entrance by adding the pirate face to the facade and the skull continued to be used as an exit only. I do have the original large model of the Whacky Shack facade that was hand built by Bill Tracy (Amusement Display Associates) in 1963. It was displayed in the lobby of the Strand Theatre in Wildwood to promote the new attraction in 1964.
@AbandonedMines115 ай бұрын
@@funchase Thanks for the clarification and info. Would love to see that Whacky Shack façade. That was my favorite ride as a kid when we would go there every summer in June. Always had to ride that almost as if it was a ritual. It’s what got me Interested in dark rides. I remember also going through the haunted house that was on one of the other piers where they had actual live actors inside the house and stuff like that. I remember finding a picture of that online a few years ago, but I don’t think there was ever a lot of preservation of that particular haunted house. I don’t think it was around for too many years. it was pretty good, though! I remember there was one scene inside showing a bedroom with a huge bed that was covered with rats. I remember some of the rats were alive and scampering all over the place. I remember they also had this psychedelic hallway or room that was painted in a black-and-white chessboard pattern. They had a strobe light in there that was flashing like crazy. Good times!
