74 knots isnt bad at all. People talk about these like you're landing at 90 knots. Cant wait to start my build

If it's gusting, I usually do about 85. I've seen the IAS in EFIS data drop 20 knots on final when hitting a wind sheer. Good luck on your build!

what cruise power do you generally need to fly to get ~200 KTAS? I see you are at 63% power there.
@mikesatchell8317
@mikesatchell8317 14 күн бұрын
My "best power" speed at 5000 DA is about 186 KTAS a little over red line (2700). The EI/EFI system can pump a lot of fuel in to keep the CHTs and Oil temps under control if needed. Usually cruise 9K or higher, leaned to less than 8 GPH. When it's bumpy, throttle back a bit to around 130 KIAS. There's a winglet fairing mod that allegedly will yield a few more MPH. Also an adjustable NACA inlet lip can improve cooling control on take off and cruise.

I have questions sir. 1. Does have Heat/AC? 2. Shortest runway takeoff/or landing? 3. Can De-icing be installed 4. Can these be built with folding wings? Just curious, and thanks for vid, informative.
@mikesatchell8317
@mikesatchell8317 2 ай бұрын
Yes it has cabin heat. On sunny days the canopy alone can provide warmth if the cabin has minimal air leaks. Otherwise a heat muff and 3” scat tube provides plenty of heat for me. The shortest runway for take off and landing depends on density altitude, gross weight, wind, prop and engine. I’ve taken off in about 800-900 feet near sea level, 80 F, with only 10 gallons of gas and just me on board. Loaded pretty full on a hot day at 6500 DA, took a lot of runway. The Defiant is the only canard I’ve seen with one of the canard wings that would fold.

AFAIK, nobody has installed de-icing equipment on a Cozy other than heated Pitot and the ice shields for the elevator balance weights. I suppose it's possible to embed tubes to pump fluid to the leading edges.

Sorry for the dumb question but where is the baggage compartment? I had expected the baggage compartment to be forward of the cabin to balance out the engine and general propensity for aft cg?
@mikesatchell8317
@mikesatchell8317 2 ай бұрын
The plans call the inside strake areas and the inside of the spar as baggage/storage areas. Some people will use the nose to store tools, oil and other small stuff but space is pretty limited up there. The forward passenger foot area has some space if the back seaters aren’t very tall. Under all the seats thigh supports is enough room for small tool bags, quarts of oil, water bottles, nose tire. As far as large bags go, you can haul three people and stack the bags in one of the back seats. Some people have added baggage pods attached to the wings that will hold skis , golf clubs and soft sided bags.

I just got my plans a couple weeks ago and I've been reading through them as a first step. I'm really interested in your antenna setup. With the foil not in the bottom of the fuselage, how has your nav comm been working? Is there any problems? I think setting as many of the avionics up in a bay like you have makes good sense.

The VOR and ILS antennas seem to be working fine. I had a friend shoot an ILS with me and it worked as well as his GA antennas.

The METAR at KAFW was 20 knots gusting 30 on the surface. The air over the buildings usually causes some wind shear too. I was carrying a little more speed for gust factor so could easily go around if necessary.

Great vid and beautiful Cozy. Wondering how those cover flanges on each side of your canard work for keeping cold air and water out? I'm looking at doing something similar on my Long-EZ.

The most rain it's been in was when it was parked on a ramp in Alabama with a Bruce's travel cover on and some (maybe a pint) did get through the canopy/longeron area because the canopy wasn't latched. I did fly through some light rain on the way to Rough River and didn't get any rain in the cabin. I can feel a little bit of air around my feet but think it's coming through the nose gear cover and maybe a little bit through the top nose gear cover. I think lips with a bead of soft silicone would make a very good seal but need to have some kind of release agent on one of the lips so the cover is easy to take off.

Thanks Mark! Pulling the power back and not hearing the pitch change much was a big clue the issue wasn't mechanical. I didn't feel any change in control forces either. It was early on a Sunday morning so there wasn't much traffic on some decent sized roads nearby. I wondered what it sounded like from the ground.

Yes! God Bless Texas! RPH and JSO have even cheaper fuel (4.60 & 4.00). I think the balancer is a good deal because the static balance only gets up to 2230 RPM. The cost for two of those balance jobs is more than one Balancemaster.

That is a great, really great video! I feel like I spent the best 15 minutes of my life watching it. Very relaxing. My only suggestion would be to somehow have the instrument panel show more, and perhaps as I've seen on other videos, have an airspeed on the screen. It really changes the way you feel knowing the speed which then I can compare to my own experience. I had a Long Eze in 1980 with a friend for about 6 months and it was the most beautiful plane ride I ever had. Savannah, Georgia to Key West, Florida was like a ride around the block in that plane. Anyway, your video is outstanding!
