wow, they have some really big important pieces in that museum. I often ask myself similar questions and find I just don't have an answer as to the why. I can tell you what I do and don't like but not really why. Modern sculpture, I know I tend to like the more rounded, softer pieces, like I'll love henry Moore or Hepworth, but just have no feeling other than "why bother?" for most of ernst or arp's works.Most of the very angular modern art just leaves me completely cold - except that if it's a mirror and it's placed in nature, then I love it; similar mirrored sculptures in town I have no interest in either. I love Andy Goldsworthy though, so maybe it is in fact something to do with the relationship to nature. Those are the ones I want to stroke and touch and feel. In fact, I'm just as, if not more likely to have my breath taken away by a beautiful landscape, or the play of light in the leaves of a tree (those roots!! <3 ) . If it's a painting I think it's most often the colours that delight me and thinking of it now, I wonder if it might again be "natural" colours that I get most enthused by? Colours that have warmth and depth? but there's plenty of black and white art that I adore, photography... And are we talking about music too? For music it's often music that makes me want to dance and sing with it, but not always - it's more about art that makes me FEEL. As to what makes me feel, I honestly can't pin it down. Maybe that's part of the magic of it. That it twangs heart strings that I didn't quite know I had, or on the contrary that I know well?
@ArianeZurcher212
@ArianeZurcher212 12 күн бұрын
@@lauremeaney7883 yes!!! I do too. Sometimes the answer is - I’m not sure, but then I like to sit with that and question it further. Sometimes it helps me to talk about it with another person to see what comes up. R. is great to talk to because he often has very different responses, though we also love similar things as well. But sometimes he’ll love something that leaves me cold and then he will tell me what he sees, what he’s responding to and then I start to feel more open to it. I’ve never been a fan of Jeff Koons until I saw Puppy outside the Guggenheim in Bilbao. Fell in love with that. But his vacuum cleaners from the 50’s… perhaps that’s the point, but I do tend to just keep walking. A friend of mine loves his work and explained to me why and it was brilliant and gave me a whole new appreciation for his work- a kind of inclusiveness of the mundane, etc but emotionally I feel detached. I love work that, as you say, tugs at my heart. I love Kentridge because he uses so many elements and music is such a huge component of his work. His message, it seems to me, (and I’m being ridiculously simplistic) is one of kindness, empathy and love. The overlay of sound, whether manufactured or natural is exciting. And I too am drawn to the more organic rounded lines than the angular. Color is huge as well. I love anything that stops me in my tracks and makes me think or feel. I love that art is humanity’s embrace. ❤️💕❤️ Hugs to you Laure.

For me, the beauty of art is that it transcends all spoken language. Perhaps I should not have used the word “universal” in the title, as we are indeed fortunate that English is spoken by so many, but art… it has its own unspoken language, I feel.
