My English literature dissertation, that I'm working on now, is on Lovecraft. I love Folio Society, and yet I missed this one. If they reprint it I'll snap it up as I can't afford it otherwise.

Thank you! :D I do hope they reprint it so more people can get it. It's an absolutely gorgeous book and the stories I've read so far have been really weird and interesting. I hope you manage to snag yourself a copy!!

Not as prestigious a volume as this, but beautiful in its own right, I can recommend the Barnes and Noble leatherbound “The Complete Cthulhu Mythos Tales” (containing 23 stories).

I wont mind if you don't, but will you do any future videos with voice over? I really liked the video and will definitely watch more. Really well made.
@francesreadsbooks74443 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words :) I have thought about it before but at the moment I don't plan to do any voice overs. Mostly because I'm quite camera shy haha. But also, as there are already a few other excellent channels that do provide voice overs and reviews for their Folio books, I'm happy for now for my videos to focus mainly on providing a visual presentation of the books. I'm always open to feedback and ideas though so comments like this are much appreciated!

Really loving your work! I need to get a copy of this but I’m hoping to pick it up on a sale. I’ve been reading Something Wicked This Way Comes and I am enjoying it quite a bit more than Fahrenheit 451. It’s a true masterpiece! Thanks for the great work! I really look forward to these.
@francesreadsbooks74443 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! That kind of feedback really makes my day :) I was tempted to wait for this to go on sale, too, but I have a severe lack of patience and will-power haha. I've got to say, I'm really enjoying it so far - some of the stories I think are brilliant, and it might be amongst the nicest Folio books I own. Pictures don't quite do it justice! And the illustrations are stunning. I'm very much looking forward to reading Something Wicked! I've had it on my shelf for a while now but I've been putting off reading it because I know I'll be sad to finish it if that makes sense! I'm really glad to hear that you're enjoying it so much :D How I wish I knew about Folio earlier so I could've gotten myself a copy of The Martian Chronicles!

Most excellent! I loved the music! Keep up the great work! Any favorite ghost stories from this edition?
@francesreadsbooks74443 жыл бұрын
Thank you! :D There were quite a few good tales in this collection. 'The Eyes of the Panther' and 'The Upper Berth' I found really enjoyed, but 'The Captain of the 'Pole Star'' was probably the one that I thought about most after reading it. I'd say the stories at the beginning of the book were stronger than the ones towards the end, but I'm still glad that I got to read them all. They've been a nice start to the Halloween season!

Have you read the book yet? What are your thoughts?
@francesreadsbooks74443 жыл бұрын
I have! I got through it in two sittings I loved it that much. I read Fahrenheit 451 a short while back and I quickly became a Bradbury fan so this was a must-buy for me. I think I actually prefer this to F451 as well; it's just brilliant. Some stories I found better than others but on the whole I can't recommend it enough! I have a copy of Something Wicked which I'm looking forward to reading, and I'd love a copy of The Martian Chronicles but I discovered FS too late to get a copy and I can't find one for sale anywhere unfortunately. Have you read much Bradbury?
@rarebookreviewer3 жыл бұрын
Frances Reads Books Very good to hear! I just read 451 last week and enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to getting into Something Wicked sometime soon as well but I’ve heard it’s a tough read. Not sure how true that is.

Another great video! Great to see this book! I really need to get a copy. Love the camera work and music choice! I have found I like the slower pans the best, like you did for a good amount of The Farseer Trilogy. They really allow me to soak in all of the minute details. Overall, this is an ingenious way to review FS books!

I fortunately haven't experienced any shipment delays being in the UK, but I've heard shipments can take some time to get to other countries. I don't think it can be helped at the moment though due to Covid. I'm sure Folio Society are doing their best! Lord of the Flies is actually sold out currently on the FS site and I don't know when/if it'll be reprinted so if you really want a copy you may have to check out other sites/bookstores :)

This book is beautiful, but i find Leroux so difficult to read its putting me off buying it
@francesreadsbooks74443 жыл бұрын
This book is definitely one of the most beautiful Folio books I own! And it's interesting to hear that you're not a fan of Leroux's writing. For me, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I did like his writing! It is a bit unusual though, I'll admit. I also really enjoyed his short novel 'The Mystery of the Yellow Room' featured in Folio's 'Locked Room Mysteries" which I'd recommend :)

Gross, I didn't even notice that, nice catch. Honestly, I'm a bit disappointed in this edition. I'm not a big fan of the colors and the price seems a bit steep when each book only contains 5 illustrations each. Not just that, but in the US, the signed editions were going for almost $150 more than the standard set.

@@francesreadsbooks7444 I’m reposting this, as I’m not sure I posted it in a way you'd be notified. --------------------------------- You’re very welcome! I saw you posted a Persian Fire video recently. Looking forward to it! So far I've bought Game of Thrones, Dune, Eagle Against the Sun (about WWII), and a barely used copy of The Bayeux Tapestry, as it is sold out. I'd love to get the Farseer Trilogy next. I haven't read it before, but it sounds amazing and FS' edition is just gorgeous! I’ve only briefly looked through the non-fiction books, I’m about halfway through Dune and maybe one-third through GOT. I’ve read Dune before, but rereading it with a FS edition is a real treat! I love their choice of buckram for the cover material. The gritty texture reminds me of sand, which is a really cool link to the story! Sam Weber’s cover design is incredible and his illustrations in the book are gorgeous! I find I prefer his more lifelike illustrations over other artists’ styles, though it is interesting to learn about other ways to express aspects of a story through art. GOT’s quality is outstanding! Each page is a thing of beauty! Every last detail was designed and built to perfection! The binding is so wonderful to look at and to touch. The slipcase is fantastic, and the enormous fold-out map is a work of art. I do see a difference in quality at each price point, and between fiction and non-fiction. Do you see that as well?
@francesreadsbooks74443 жыл бұрын
They're some brilliant books!! A Game of Thrones is one one the first FS books I ever bought at it still remains one of the best, I think. As you say, the quality of it is just incredible and it is a perfect example of what Folio Society offers. It didn't take me long to buy A Clash of Kings! And now I'm (very impatiently) waiting for the third book! I've never read Dune before but I bought a copy just recently so I could read it before the film comes out and it really is a stunner. I've seen Sam Weber's illustrations for Lord of the Flies and Fahrenheit 451 and sometimes I liked them but sometimes I found them a bit... bare? I'm really hoping I like them for Dune though. Eagle Against the Sun is on my wishlist but it's fighting alongside plenty others too so I'm not sure when I'll manage to get a copy. You'll have to let me know how it is! I agree, you can definitely see and feel a difference in quality at the various price points. One of the most 'quality' non-fiction books I have from FS is 'The Golden Bough'. It's just beautiful and possibly the nicest feeling book in my collection. I'd never heard of it before but it was in the sale when I discovered FS so I snapped it up quickly because the subject sounded fascinating. I'm very glad I managed to get a copy. I really hope you're enjoying your books and thank you again for the comments! :)

@@francesreadsbooks7444 Thanks! I'm pretty happy with them. They've been a great introduction to the Folio Society. Glad you've been able to get GOT and the sequel! Such a great edition! Yeah, I heard about the new Dune movie coming up. I laughed when I saw Timothee Chalamet was staring, as he seems to be in everything these days. I think he'll do a good job. I really liked the Sci-Fi channel's mini-series and hope the movie is well made. I haven't seen too many of Sam Weber's illustrations yet, but some illustrators have almost a comic book feel, which for me takes away from the serious nature of some books. I don't have the most vivid imagination, so it's nice to find illustrations that are close to what you're imagining or even more lifelike. Yeah, I'll let you know how Eagle Against the Sun goes. I read a good portion of the first chapter in an ebook to confirm I wanted to buy the FS edition. The author can paint a scene well and is very meticulous in listing his sources, which are mostly primary sources. In this day and age of claims of "fake news" it's nice to see how more traditional or academic writing methods can mute those claims as well as establish trust with the reader. The fact that this book is part of the curriculum at West Point says a lot about it's quality and accuracy. Good to know I'm not missing something regarding FS' book quality. I'd love it if each book had the same quality as the GOT books, but that would probably make their pricing prohibitive. I'll have to check out FS' edition of the Golden Bough. You're welcome and keep up the great work!
