Maybe you have this cuz the strings are not tensioned tightly enough so they don't have enough grip with the wheel. This can be fixed by making the height of the bridge lower or remove bridge at all. Also it can be significant to remove the sharp edges of the wheel to increase the area of contact with the strings. And yes, don't forget use enough of rosin. Also instrument needs a sound hole in its top deck to rich sound.

At the end of your video I realized the reverb effect didn't quite compensate lack of the resonance box. I'm trying to figure out how this problem can be solved using sound effects? Or just print out the entire instrument, and make it sound more traditional? Anyway, that was interesting.

I think most people who are looking for a more acoustic sound just mic up an acoustic. I've never heard an electric that doesn't sound at least a little... well, electric. I believe I was using one of the basic reverbs inside Guitar Rig Pro? (I really need to get better about taking notes along the way). So, it's possible that a different effect and/or pedal would do a better job. Also, weirdly enough, my "real" electric is a Zeta Jazz, and... this little 3d print sounds less "electric" to me than that one. I have no idea why, but... the pickup also matters here. Both of these things are something I'd like to experiment with more towards the end of the year, though. Fun experiments! And thanks for tuning in! 🎻

@@ComposerKristin No problem Kristin, I used to compose music since C64 and then Amiga500. Hundred years ago and I totally understand your passion. Thinking about it I recollected if you find the right sample, you can make your violin sound like entire orchestra. Or like you said pedal or rather sound effect where you can mix effects together. It takes time to find the sound you'd want to get, but that's the beauty of experimenting, and fun on its own. If comes to getting rid of electric sound. I wouldn't. In my comment I was referring to the sound of traditional violin which is more 3 dimensional and powerful. And I was thinking how to get the same result on electric one. And then realized, it can sound even more powerful w/ proper samples and effects. Good luck with your experiments.

With all due respect, why not use lock washers? EDIT: or loctite
@ComposerKristin
@ComposerKristin Ай бұрын
I experimented with lock washers and didn't think they were particularly effective in this context. I did use Loctite for the end of the crank in version 1, but overall I don't like using the stuff on an active build that needs to be changed/adjusted/etc. My little tubing clamp worked the best out of everything that I tried, but I'm sure there are plenty of other effective solutions. I'll have the stls up shortly, so you're welcome to give building this a try and report back what worked best for you. I don't always show everything I try on camera, because then people will complain that the video is too long and boring. <shrug> Everyone's got an opinion on the internet....

After posting I starting thinking that the Performer v5 disk was kind of a high version number, so I did a little digging. Apparently Digital Performer and Performer did technically exist at the same time by this point, but I don't think the first version or two of Digital Performer were particularly accessible to most people. It wasn't until the late 90s/early 2000s that actually recording to your hard disk like we do today was feasible for the average composer/musician. If anyone remembers/has experience with those early Digital Performer versions during this time... comment!

Not sure how to load them, I could buy a 3.5" reader, then buy the latest Reason and hope it loads (doubtful it would play as it did on v1.0).. but.. regardless, for us historians, it is interesting finding such relics. :)

The lovely wonky sound is the benefit of it being too short. It's impossible to control the peg position on a short string as the pressure also increases the string tension too much. (Chicken & Egg problem) I kind of get that the wonky sound was probably part of the highly desirable feature set, but if you make it longer, you will be able to actually control the pitch to some extent. And of course, the wheel edge shouldn't be 3D printed you can glue a wooden veneer on it, sand it smooth and use rosin.

Kristin, just finished the entire performance. I wonder if you would be amenable to a “how to” video on how a work like this is performed and recorded. For instance, do you play into a looper and then the looper’s output is fed into your DAW’s inputs? Or do you loop the performances within Ableton itself? I have no idea if your listeners would be interested, but I would like to see your techniques in making a similar short piece.
@ComposerKristin
@ComposerKristin 3 ай бұрын
Wow, thanks for watching all that, LOL. Honestly, I still haven't figured out who the heck my audience is yet (or... even what _I'm_ doing), but I wouldn't be opposed to making a video like that at some point. The Cliff Notes version this is: it's all in Ableton. I was actually working off my desktop that's situated behind me in a too-awkward-to-film-in location (Long HDMI/audio/USB cables + a little portable flatscreen I'm viewing on. Violin + mic was plugged directly into my MOTU mk5 interface). Theoretically that would give me more processing power than a laptop for everything, but probably 30 minutes or so near the end the audio in my headphone playback was jittering a lot from the massive amount of tracks/effects I was piling on. Thankfully the recorded file didn't reflect this, but... I'm going to need to come up with a more stable system and/or use way less effects, I guess. Whether that means adding looper pedals or a mixer + some sort of external recording device I'm not sure yet. I probably should get on that, hmmm.... Slightly longer addition: What you see on the video is literally my first time attempting a whole live setup like this. I mostly use Ableton just in a writing/production situation. The day before I set up a template with random sample sounds/effects I liked in different tracks, so they'd be easily accessible. Otherwise, I just kind of went for it, assuming I could scrap it and re-record if it was a disaster. I guess I lucked out! It's kind of a mystery to me, too. :)

@ComposerKristin
@ComposerKristin 4 ай бұрын
Well... music school doesn't exactly pay the bills, so I wouldn't wish too hard, LOL. I'm extraordinarily flattered, but I would just feel weird commenting/critiquing someone else's music at this point. This is actually a topic I've struggled with a bit since starting this channel: How to actually teach composition. Because my experience was more one of being loaded up with theory and form classes, but the actual composing was more of a "figure it out" process. Even private lessons were just the professor making suggestions, which I promptly ignored (which made him progressively madder and madder, to be fair). So... I've long thought about whether it's a "teachable" skill. And... of course it is. None of us just come out of womb knowing how to do this, but I'm not sure I've entirely identified what I think that process is or should be. I guess I'm going to be mulling that over for a while. My general (probably unhelpful) suggestions/comments are: 1. Listen, listen, listen to a lot of music. Especially stuff that you like and that's close to your style. How often does the melody and/or harmony change? How often does it repeat phrases and sections? Do you like how that sounds? If you read music and there's a score or sheet music you can follow along with, also do that. Otherwise, make note of what you're hearing, using whatever language you have, while you're following along. You don't necessarily need to know the names of things to hear them. 2. I often think structure is more important that the little details. You can have a great melody or chord progression, but if you just repeat that one phrase over and over again, without any changes, well... most people aren't going to love listening to that. There's an element of that in minimalism, but that music still tends to, eventually, go somewhere. 3. You're going to suck. Probably forever. The older I get, the less I understand what "good" music even is. The stuff I like seems to be universally disliked, so... does it make it bad? Are my tastes bad? Are their tastes bad? Beats me. I have enough fancy words in my back pocket that I can make a great argument either way, but winning a debate doesn't necessarily mean I've won some big "truth". I have many days I truly don't know what that means. Is there truth in music? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 4. Ask "why?" I ask this a lot of people, and I don't know if it's too much for anyone who's starting out. The first thing I ever wrote was a string quartet, because I just wanted to see if I could do it (I mean, if that Mozart dude could write something at 5 .... 😂 ). I also played in a string quartet at the time, so it wasn't too unlike just writing something for your band. It was terrible, but... I kept at it anyway. But at a certain point, I do think people need to ask the why of their music, mostly because it determines your choices. I'm not getting into the charts with an atonal pop song, so I'm going to have to conform to some sort of standard if that's what I'm seeking. Likewise, do you want something that sounds pretty, or shocking, or is some sort of puzzle, or expresses an explicit emotion? It's fine to not really know, but I find there's some value in the asking. Aaaand... now I want to write an atonal pop song. Damn it....

I’ve always liked SOUND and vibration because of these micro Toale instruments a lot of the instruments in my ancestry are surprisingly not just logic or percussive. They are also based in noise I have several instruments that make some very peculiar noises and I incorporate them with electronics, so that’s one thing I do but lately I’ve been having a lot of fun with the ambient noise box.
