Thanks for this Nicholas! Yesterday’s session found me frantically moving the mike (Rode Ntk) around to minimize key clacking, particularly as I was multitracking oboes 1.2.3. Your instrument didn’t have that issue. Also you record in a very live room. Please comment on this choice. Thanks!

It would be lovely if John Wilson and the Sinfonia of London recorded Alfredo Casella's orchestrations for Balakirev's Islamey and J.S. Bach's Chaconne BWV1004. Casella's orchestration for Mily Balakirev's Islamey, is an orchestral tour de force - it will surely stretch the orchestra to the limit. There is astonishing volume per page, at least one page requires 30 staves, there is textural complexity, divisi strings, tutti passages that demand considerable instrumentation, but there are also passages full of colour and delicacy with subtle and fine instrumental soli emitting mesmerising melodic writing. On the other hand, Casella brought a lot of inventiveness and boldness to bear, when doing his orchestral transcription for Bach's Chaconne. He kept Bach's original violin, but simultaneously, he brought to the fore all the polyphonic and contrapuntal substratum that exists in latent form (in the original violin work).

Quel équlibre entre le contexte musicologique, l'étude de la composition et la performance. Les richesses de la forme sonate sont vives et enjouées.

I downloaded Beethoven set and really enjoyed your colorful, vibrant, imaginative playing throughout, which makes the Juilliard's 60s recordings sound grey by comparison, IMHO. That said, it is beyond frustrating that one of the most beautiful stretches in all of Beethoven -- the passage about 2/3's of the way though the Op 59 No. 1 slow mov't -- is a mere two or three energized atoms above inaudibility! And I listen in a dedicated, quiet sound room. Turn up the volume and forte sections are ear-splitting. No one was concerned about this during playback sessions? Same problem afflicted your Schubert SQ 15 in places. Otherwise, I look forward to the rest of the series.
