Yeah that unfortunately means two herds when it comes to breeding which doesn’t work for me. Plus I’m not going to pen up a bull 10 months outta the year
@whiteface50556 күн бұрын
Dont worry about the the hay. Think of every bale of hay as an acre of pasture. Probably cheaper than rental cost. Plus all the fertilizer wraped up and deposited on your acres. Win. Win.
@WR_Ranch6 күн бұрын
True, the soil will welcome the hay. However, I am also paying rent for the other half of the herd so unfortunately no savings there
@flocker1236 күн бұрын
At least hay is cheaper this year. I have 15 dexter's and rotate them on about 10 acres and always run out of pasture by mid august as the grass don't grow fast enough. Im going to try a couple paddock with Cereal rye in fall and spring and summer annuals starting in June, Im thinking pearl millet and Italian Rye as they both love heat and then back to Rye in the fall. We will see if it works. Also get a Bull they are pretty gentle at least mine is and they make sure they are bred. I leave him with the herd until a month after calving and the separate him with any older steers and feed them hay and pasture or you can coral the bull and just feed him hay if you don't have enough pasture.

@WR_Ranch10 күн бұрын
Interesting. I know there are two types of needles. Grit blasted and smooth? Which one are you using? Is it injecting any medication at all? The dart doesn’t have to stay in the animal as long as all the meds get pushed in. And what power setting are you using?

@@WR_Ranch so why IR over renting a bull? I imagine insemination rates would be higher with a Bull. Saying that a “bull for rent” is available.
@WR_RanchАй бұрын
Exactly that last point. Unfortunately nothing is for rent within driving distance. The dexter breed is not popular in my area. I knew going in when I chose this breed that AI was going to be my only guaranteed option.
@Eon69ncАй бұрын
Just my opinion, I would have leased a bull. While AI is great for introducing genetics the conception rate is lower as you know due to timing. I do enjoy your channel and it really shows how you care about your livestock.
@WR_RanchАй бұрын
Thank you! And for sure, if I could lease a bull 42 days a year I totally would! Unfortunately I have no options for that in my area. The dexter breed already is rare around here, and the few other producers within driving distance of me that I have found are not in a position to loan out the only herd bull they need to have on their cows at the same time as I need him. I love AI but yes, it’s a lot of work and money for chance success

Just found your site and enjoyed watching the cattle grazing, I'm a Brit and watch a British farmer's videos on his Dexter heard, managing overwintering in sheds and just getting the herd out onto grass. He also mows his own winter feed of hay, silage and haylage, the latter two are wrapped. Take a look at Farmer P. and see if you like it. In the mean time I'll catch up on yours. Take care.

Currently I don’t have a perimeter fence and only have a few goats and pigs so I only graze a tiny portion. Finally got the go ahead from the wife to order my perimeter fence! It's all about context and your overall goals for your farm. It's also worth noting that you might not know what that context is or what your goals are for a few years... or it may all change once you get to work. The #1 must is to be flexible and don't be afraid to switch things up to fit your life. Whether it's switching animal types, number of animals, adjusting pastures and paddocks to fit your needs. It never stays the same 😊

Ive watched 6 videos of farmers moving cattle this morning... why is it farmers always open the gate " into " the cattle instead of with the flow of cattle ???? Here at 2:43 your pushing the gate into the cattle ........and...... Pete ( just a few acres ) moving his cattle kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rJ6petyLztfVeZc.html at 17:17 he pulls the gate wires into the cattle ??? Kind of dangerous not to say foolish.... Just my view.
@WR_Ranch3 ай бұрын
Good observation and yes, always easier to open in the direction of flow. I can not speak for any one else, but as far as this video on my ranch these two gates only open one way. In fact, there is only one set of gates on the home ranch that can swing either way. This was not by design, unfortunately just how the old fence openings worked out. Lucky for me it never causes a problem (knock on wood). If I had wild cattle that could be different. Gotta make do with what we have!
