No.... the problem is that it used to be a job for life, paid similarly to other public services such as police officers and nurses etc. The buses were council operated and it was seen as a career to work there. Deregulation meant that companies now run for profit and they have ruined the bus driver occupation in the process... it is now a shit job, little over minimum wage, with no respect given, treated like children, no perks, no benefits, no future and no job security. The companies do not look after the welfare of drivers and allow the public to abuse drivers so long as they pay their fare. Lothian buses are still going strong!! I wonder why... drivers on £38k a year, pension, private health insurance, modern buses, smart uniform, driver social clubs, job security, career progression and some respect!

This reminds me a little of the Gabriel Fernandez case in the US. People who have kids just for the government benefits. Gabriel's mother just wanted him back because her and her boyfriend wanted the benefits. They tortured him, and eventually the boyfriend beat him to death because according to him Gabriel was gay--Gabriel had been raised by his mother's uncle and his partner until the age of 4 until Gabriel's grandfather took him because he didn't want Gabriel being raised by gay men. Eventually the mother got custody of him when he was around 8 or so. So it went that Gabriel was dead less than a year after going to live with his mother and her boyfriend. Not saying what happened to Alfie wasn't horrendous, but what happened to poor Gabriel almost made me want to throw up. I couldn't' even finish watching the docuseries they have of his murder on Netflix, and usually I'm pretty good at compartmentalizing when watching these kind of things, which I watch a lot of.
