Fog got me swamped by a non radar boat... In fog, you cant see, boats go slower, but cause larger wakes as you go slow off plane. As a large 40' vessel approached in the fog, they got pretty close because they feel they are going slow. They quick steer away as they see me, but then came their 4ft wake. Next thing i knew i had 1ft of water in my CC. It quickly drained.

We pride ourselves on promoting what's in the best interests of our members, not gasoline manufacturers or the corn lobby, Michael. There's no dispute that ethanol in fuel remains a problem for marine engines. It's ILLEGAL to use fuel containing ethanol in excess of 10% in marine engines. AND labeling of higher ethanol fuels at highway gas stations is STILL potentially confusing to those filling up their boats at the pump -- I almost made that mistake in my own car just yesterday. BoatUS will continue to recommend ethanol-free fuels for marine engines whenever possible. That said, we are excited about the potential of some BIOFUELS that have been extensively TESTED in marine engines and deemed safe. And they're finally becoming more available at marinas. We've been reporting on these developments in BoatUS Magazine and will continue to update as there's new info. But in the meantime, ethanol-free gas is a boat owner's best choice.

Fuel gauges are notoriously finicky, Dan. Especially if you have a fuel tank that's irregularly shaped. We recommend keeping track of your fuel burn during every trip -- not just relying on the gauge -- for that very reason. I have a TowBoat US Gold Mbr relationship. 2 years ago we had a south east Fla Summer Storm (not hurricane or named storm) come upon us. With minutes weather warning 70mph winds and 2 touchdown twisters! Well my 44' boat broke from anchorage, was pulled into a Marina, dragging against 5 boats & Marina dock pilings. It happened that TowBoat US was out securing other boats who broke loose. The "hooked-up" my boat without contacting me, towed to a local Marina "for safety", no people or property in Peril. Then I get a call from TowBoat US saying they "salvaged" my boat, No covered by my Gold Mbrship; Cost was $15,000., plus another $25,000 boats & Marina piling Paid. That's Spilt Milk under the Bridge! Do to this experience my Hurricane Plan now is to be on board (againest your advise) in Protected water with anchors(2) and all Safety measurements!! Q: How can I STOP a Tow Boat operator from taking my boat? NO trespassing? Emergence call ph#? Unauthorized to Tow? Thanks for replying!

Hey, why is he saying I'm only going to spend 20% of what it says on the sticker?!?
@boatus
@boatus 15 күн бұрын
Because if you buy a brand that holds its value, finance it, maintain it properly, and figure that you're eventually going to sell it and get some of that investment back, you are not going to outlay that full amount you see on the sticker. For those arguing that cash is better than financing, we did the math and if you invested the cash you would have paid instead of financing over the time you have the boat, you'd end up with significantly more money than you'd pay in interest over the term of the loan -- even with today's rates.

Good descriptive video. One suggestion is to limit the amount of anchor rode which extends into the channel. Some beaches have lots of boats running up and down and most of the boaters do not look for underwater anchor lines.

Im pretty sure i put to much new oil back in. Dipstick reading is real high. Haven't been on the water yet. Should i drain to where i am just ABOVE the SAFE reading on the dipstick? THOUGHTS? ADVICE??
@boatus
@boatus 15 күн бұрын
Thanks for the question, Chris. Yes, you want to get the oil into the proper range for sure. Running with too much can be very hard on the seals. If you don't already have one, we highly recommend getting a dipstick pump. You can purchase at West Marine or other stores. It allows you to pump out the oil directly from the dipstick hole. It's way less messy, and you can use it for all your oil changes. Hopefully this is a simple fix.

Hey, Tom. Yeah, we have a really good mic but it malfunctioned that day and we were left with ambient audio only. Definitely not one I'm proud of. If you subscribe to our videos, you'll see that we've upgraded our game significantly since then. We schedule our video shoots months in advance, and we were in the midst of Covid with a lot of restrictions, so reshooting wasn't feasible. Perhaps we'll put it on the list to revisit in the future.

Oopsies! Folks think it's "easy," but driving a tiller steer boat is counterintuitive until you get used to it. Hopefully the video helped a little. You are most welcome, Top. It's a little counterintuitive at first. If you can, get out into open water and play around (safely) to learn how the boat handles before you try close-quarters maneuvering. And you're correct -- taking the boating course does make you more knowledgeable than a lot of the folks out there. Congratulations on getting your certification! Be safe and have fun. Skip the wire, and use a split ring for seizing! Place the rope in the shackle, then add the split ring on the non-threaded side of the shackle. Screw the pin in. Once that's assembled, thread the split ring through the hole in the pin. You will never want to use wire again!!! The split ring is tool-free, and completely reusable.

Here is the plan...get the boats away from the path.
@boatus
@boatus 21 күн бұрын
Absolutely true, Rick. But there are a lot of other considerations, which means you need to have a plan in place. Does it need to be hauled? Do you have a contract for priority storm hauling with your marina? Does your insurance help share the cost of hauling before a storm? Does the marina have a safe place to store it on land? How do they prep hauled boats for a storm? Is your boat on a lift? Can't haul out? Can the boat ride it out in the marina? Who is doing the prep and when? What checklist prep items does your boat need? Do you have the supplies? If you can't leave your boat in the marina, where is the safest anchorage? And so on and so on. So, yes, getting away from the path is great -- but sometimes that's not feasible for many, many reasons. Preparation is key -- and that starts with a solid plan, which should be done months ahead of the start of hurricane season!

Do I understand this correctly for my electronic shifter: When my shift lever is between the neutral and forward detents, or between the neutral and reverse detents, I am shifting gears but not turning my propellers until I actually click into the F or R detents? No one has been able to explain this to me, and this video I think has come closest.
@boatus
@boatus 21 күн бұрын
Simple answer, phlegm: Between the detents it remains in neutral. You're out of gear until the propeller begins turning, and the moment you go into gear is when it will start spinning. Shifting is actually going from one to the other, and the only reason there's extra motion in the lever is so you don't shift too abruptly or accidentally. Hope this helps, and thanks for the question!
