I just happened upon this tear-inducing opus and I can honestly say that RVW definitely had the Midas touch as a composer: everything he composed just turned to gold.

Ravilious studied under Nash. He had a good sense of line because he was first a woodblock carving artist. Some of his woodcuts were far better than thes paintings! You should see Nash before praising this artist too much.

Hi Malena, glad you enjoyed the video. Vaughan Williams actually arranged this music from an old tune that was supposedly written by Henry VIII. Hmm! Nice to hear all is well with you, even if you are having to brave the cold. Spring must be just around the corner where you are though, it will be autumn next for us. Best wishes for now, David

My husbands dad was drafted a few months after he and his mom got married in April 1942. After his basic training at Ft Leonard Wood in Central Missouri, he was sent to California for jungle warfare training. Mom went out there and spent a couple months, just to see him as much as possible. My hubby was conceived in Marysville , CA. His dad was shipped off to India, then Burma in the CBI theater. He survived and came home with a silver plate in his skull. Mom died just before their 67th anniversary - Dad outlived her by 5 years and a month., she was 93 and he was 95 when they each died. The greatest generation is almost gone from the earth.

@@happyme6153 - There are still some out there, but they are slowly dying off too. We are the chidren of those survivors of the Great Depression and World War 2. My husband was born in 1943, and I was born in 1948. I am the Baby Boomer. My husband and I just celebrated our 55th wedding anniversary - we are starting to think that this marriage just might last!

Why. Just why can't there be a place where we can go and listen to this music and dance and kiss and sway? Why is that so difficult ? Why can't Las Vegas have a place and every state as well. It just makes it so difficult and so lonely. I just don't care very much if I'm here or not. ❤

Symphonic poems like this one I like most in RVW's work. He sometimes uses folk tunes and adapts them perfectly to the symphonic context. And the paintings here are first class, showing romantic landscapes that make you dream of another era.

Why do I get so emotionally nostalgic listening to this? The Robinson Crusoe suite has the same effect. I'm just longing for those bygone days of childhood. Nothing seemed to concern us. We had no idea of what our future held for us but rather living each day as it happened. Some lovely memories and some not so. I wonder what children now would have thought of our past.

1 Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. 2 He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not. 3 And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee? 4 Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one. Job 14. I thought of the first verse after watching the moving video. There is One who does bring a clean thig out an unclean. I think you too did that as well with the pairing of these picture and Finzi's music. Well done.

Glad you enjoyed the video Kevin. I think Harold Darke is probably best known for his setting of "In the Bleak Midwinter", but, as you say, this is a very moving piece of music. It's nice to reflect upon the past as we get older; I'm a Sussex boy myself, but I did live and go to school in Kent for a few years.
