The stowaway chapter was a mix of so many things I love. An orphan answering the call to adventure. The high seas (I count the cargo hold). Weighing the fear of an unseen horror against the brutality of men waiting in the light above. A silent protector made of brooms scratching lullabies on boxes. And, in the end, it ripped my heart out. Perfect.

@@kayomartinez8671 for me it was a significant hurdle and I’m used to reading obscure stuff. Signs of Life required a reread from me to orient myself. I definitely think being able to read one volume of BRZRKR helped significantly get my feet under me. And the event in the prologue is referenced but the specifics are not necessary to understand. Mission gone wrong. Ulfson betrayed them. Done.

@FashionableCrow
@FashionableCrow 28 күн бұрын
@@TheColephelps I would say that the prologue is the most frustrating part of the book, that even upon re-read, it was better to skim. All you need to know is on a mission, Ulfson hurt a lot of people trying to kill off B. That’s it. Muscle through to the end signs of life (context for that chapter is only given at the end so read required kind of) and THEN I think that’s a good-ish spot to determine if the book catches your interest. Sorry if you already bought it, but thank goodness all of that is available in the sample as well

Tiste Andii/Liosan as Onyx/Alabaster Lords; dolls with people’s souls put inside; g*noc*des; story takes place across many thousands of years, proliferation of immortal characters; elemental dragons, some of which can veer into human form; crumbling Farum Azula as a skykeep. There are more but I forgorr, and I’m honestly just happy to see the comparison made. To be clear, I don’t think ER is a directly inspired by MbotF, but Miyazaki and Erikson are both masters of the craft, and pull from the same love of the fantasy genre. I really wished Erikson got called upon to work on the game instead of GRRM, because Malazan always felt like a fromsoft game to me. So arcane and obscure, like a mystical archeology digsite. I’d sever a limb before I’d remove either artist from my life.

Loosely related, but if anyone is looking for a book similar to dark souls, check out The Book of The New Sun. It is similar in the sense that the character progresses through a decaying civilization build up long dead civilizations that are also built on further dead civilizations. The lore is dense, and much is left to reader interpretation. Similarly to Fromsoft lore, remembering side remarks, bits of information said by the main character, Severian, become relevant 100s of pages later, so in a sense he gives you small puzzle pieces you can fit together later on.
