Cool video, makes a lot of sense! We're always happy to see people doing their own research, not just blindly going all in on one specific solution. Totally agreed on room treatment. Software solutions for calibrating your room and speakers are not a replacement for room treatment - it is always a good idea to have at least some basic treatment done, although the balance between the software correction and room treatment is probably subjective and very much dependent on your room, budget, and other personal conditions. Also, interesting point about how the different of different sound absorption materials affect different freq. ranges, this is rarely discussed when it comes to room treatment. Great advice regarding headphones and headphone calibration too - a lot of creators will find it to be a quick and legitimate (and consistent) solution with a lot of bang for your buck. With that said, we still find that room correction has a lot to offer even in poorly treated rooms. Yes, software calibration has its limits (standing waves, for example), and applying a significant software correction in an untreated room can indeed have questionable results in some areas due to the severe compensation applied. Despite that, a lot of Sonarworks users report a significant overall improvement in such scenarios too. And then of course, if your room is well-treated, software correction will provide that extra layer of accuracy too. Additionally, channel delay is also corrected for a better sound stage balance, which also adds to the improvement (especially when it comes to poor room properties). In other words, our experience and research show that software correction still has a lot to offer in both scenarios. Also, your point about speaker placement and positioning cannot be overstated. Severe low-end cancellations or buildups can often be significantly improved simply by adjusting the speaker placement, their distance from the back wall, etc. In fact, software calibration is a great analysis tool to use, as you can make educated decisions on adjusting your entire workspace layout (making adjustments based on the measurements). At the end of the day, mix translation is what counts - if you can clearly see that a specific approach improves the mix translation and consistency, then the method used is legitimate.

Wow! I really didn't expect the creators to comment on my video. Thank you for supporting what I said in the video. And I totally agree that if your room is well treated software can add that little touch to it. But that's just it. If you're going to use the software, your room should be well treated. It's meant to be the icing on the cake, not the cake. Anyway, I thought it was really cool that you guys commented. Thank you for supporting my small channel.

A constructive comment/criticism, if I may, from someone who has spent decades teaching and lecturing - you spent so much time, and so many times, telling me what you were GOING TO show me, that I lost interest before you got anywhere near showing me those things. Also, you didn't seem to have a plan or script (even just headings) that took us from an overview to details, or was entertaining and informative - it was just a totally random approach. I'm sure you know what you're doing, but from a teaching point of view, it lost me by the 6-minute marker and I just gave up.

@@Mr_Audio Thanks for taking my comments in the spirit in which they were intended :) Yes, we're all learning all the time. Having a properly structured video leads to more structured input into the brains of those watching. Same as when i give a 1-hour lecture to a lecture theatre with 550 students. I need to GET their attention, KEEP it, then SPARK their inquisitiveness, EXPLAIN stuff very logically and in order, clarifying any tricky concepts along the way. I'm sure you already know this, but knowing and doing it are two different things :) Keep at it - you obviously know your subject matter really well. It's just a case of practicing how to structure it, lay the video out (not a full shooting script but at least a series of topic headers) etc. And try to stop saying "I'm going to be covering this/explaining this/ etc in a few minutes". Maybe once, if you have to, but not as often as you do it in this video. Keep on learning :)

But I get a lot of projects from artists where they've only recorded one lead and from there you have to get creative. It works really good if you put a low-pass filter on it and cut out a lot of the highs. Maybe a bell dip around 2k or 3K as well? At least that's my experience.

@Mr_Audio2 ай бұрын
I downloaded the video from KZfaq cuz I thought you might be on to something. But the audio is mono. Because there is a time when I had an ear infection in my left ear. Which caused me to lose my hearing a bit in that ear about 70%. It was quite significant. And it stayed that way for about 3 months. I had to create an effect rack with a left and right channel so I could balance my audio for how my hearing was. Basically you put it in mono and mess with the left and right until it sounds like it's in the middle. It's a trick old school engineers used to use who had partial hearing loss in one ear. I made this video around that time so naturally, I thought that this could be true. I will probably do a video on hearing loss. Anyway if what you say is true that you're hearing 70% less on one side, you may have partial hearing loss.

In Ableton Mac, does Melodyne export the adjusted track automatically?
@Mr_Audio3 ай бұрын
Actually with Ableton you record your audio into melodyne and then melodyne plays the audio from there What I like to do is once I've tune and timeline everything inside of melodyne I'll freeze the track, duplicate it, mute the original, then minimize it so I have a backup. You know if I like want to go back and change it later. This way I can commit to the audio but I always have the option to go back. And then I flatten the duplicate track. Then your track has all the melodyne baked in.

Question do you ever use your rack as a bus or group?....or do u throw it on each track......i tend to use just one group for all my vocals and then later on i will go to each individual track with an eq or something
@Mr_Audio4 ай бұрын
That's a good question I try to do this on individual tracks Because of compression I want the compression to be triggered by an individual track, not a group of them But you can try it and see if it sounds good And if it sounds good, leave it. I tend to like happy accidents
@less_tress4 ай бұрын
@@Mr_Audio I do like this rack. i still use it as a vocal bus but i can see why u said that...the compressor on it is pretty intense it seems....i think what i may start doing is leaving both compressors off...this way i can get a general eq for all vocals from one person....then in individual tracks come back with some compressors

You know I find zero latency isn't everything it's cracked up to be You have to make a lot of compromises to do this Since I know that I'm going to be lining up everything to the grid mostly unless it's a swung note I just manually move the clip after recording Seems like it might take a while but it's really fast The way I like to do it is you move one track then record everything else Then move it all over at once to line up with the first one you already moved This way I get to keep all my high latency plugins in use if I so choose But I'm weird

If you record in 32 bit float there isn’t a lot out there that can read that file at this time. So you have to export it post in 16 hit or 24 bit anyway. Correct? Currently no phones or pcs can play back the file.
@Mr_Audio5 ай бұрын
I still record in at 24. There aren't many 32-bit capable interfaces out there that can record in at 32. So 24-bit is what I use going in. But when I'm processing my audio I do it in 32 bit This allows for more headroom all around Still have the same headroom going in But once in the daw, you can process in 32 bit, which gives you infinite amount of headroom between the noise floor and the noise ceiling And I don't know who told you that phones can't play 32-bit audio. Mine does just fine. I test all of my tracks out on my phone and in my car, and I'm always using 48k 32-bit audio for that test. And PCs do very well with 32-bit audio. I use 32 bit all the way through mastering. After that I format it to 24-bit audio 44.1 khz sample rate. This is to ensure that streaming services don't use an inferior converting method to make my audio 24-bit 44.1 khz I've got a video out that it explains formatting But I've got a faster way to do it now. I'll probably update the video soon. I'll post a link here when I'm done with it. I hope this helps if you have any more questions, I would love to hop on a zoom call and discuss them at length. So is this considered mixing and therefore the mix engineers job to do things like this or is it on the artist to do this kind of creative creation of artificial harmonies prior to sending to the mix engineer?
@Mr_Audio5 ай бұрын
That's a very good question. And it's considered a little of both. The producer's job is to get it all on the page so to speak this also might mean it's the artist job if you're doubling as the producer. The mixing engineers job is to mix the track with what they've been given. But nowadays a lot of people wear multiple hats and do all of the work. Like me! And the answer is if you can create them and you want them in there and you are the artist go for it. This also might help the mix engineer see what direction you want the song to go in. But this can also be put on the mix engineer. To make those creative taste decisions. Taste comes with time. You'll get better at making creative decisions, like this one, the more you work on music. I do a free mix giveaway every month where I work with an artist to make a full production. If you're an artist, you should enter the contest you might win! I also do free mastering. Here's both of those links with the info. www.mraudio.studio/free-mix-giveaway www.mraudio.studio/free-mastering

Yeah actually that's where I started in the music production world. All the way back in 2008. @Mr_Audio5 ай бұрын
And vocal processing just means that I'm going to take a vocal, tune-it then time- align it, then I'll use EQ, compression saturation and some de-essing to process your vocal. If you send me an instrumental along with the vocal I'll add some nice reverb and delay throws. I may also add some doubles and harmonies. Just to emphasize certain words or phrases usually to create rhythm or emotional effect.
