The blue lever is the spoilers. My brain said Pull back the throttle but my right hand was on the stick. It took two jerks before my brain said Switch hand asshole, and then I finally switched hands and pulled the throttle back. Good news was that Rotax engine took the abuse. I also learned to fly with my left hand if the engine is running.

@@tanyatucjer It is an amazing airplane! However, actually I am selling it. It has been great fun to fly since taking delivery in 2018. And actually I traded up in December of 2022 from serial number 12 and Dynon avionics to serial number 45 and dual Garmin G3X, amazing avionics. But it is time to move on.

To all, yes the clutch was replaced by a new design some months later. Stemme actually covered the cost, including overhauling the Rotax engine due to the overspeed. ROTEK Canada replaced the crankshaft, con rods, pistons, rocker arms just in case of damage. Then they inspected all of those parts and none of them had any damage! That Rotax engine is bulletproof.

Yes, the alarm is the stall warning. My previous S12 didn't have it. The stall of the S12 is so gentle anyway the warning really isn't necessary. And, while on the ground it really should NOT be blaring, it is very distracting. Before my next flight I probably will disconnect it.

The latest Stemme S12 has an overly sensitive stall warning horn. It goes off WAY too early and keeps blowing until you almost stop. I probably will disconnect it.

@ricklederman 11 ай бұрын
Thank You! Unlike most Stemme pilots, until now probably 90% of my landings have been with the engine running, just in case I need to go around. I have decided to make most of my landings as a glider, no engine. I do have the nosecone open just in case a deer runs out on the runway or someone else enters my path. It then only takes 5 seconds to get power from the engine.

While soaring, without the panels the battery might last 3 or 4 hours, the panels add another hour or two of battery life. This S12 has an additional battery that can be switched to, giving another 3 or 4 hours. My butt will not last 4 ours anyway!

My wife has been after me to pitch the hat. I have a couple new ones but the old hat just fits 😂, Next flight, new hat. And today I found the problem with the LX9000 audio. With my 1970's avionics maintenance experience, and an hour or so troubleshooting and wire testing, the speaker for the LXNav system is dead. Actually, my first civilian job after 4 years active duty in the USAF, was at National Flight Services at Toledo Express Airport. My second job was to fix a Cessna that had all of the radios go dead. Guess what, replace the speaker in the ceiling and all was well. It seems that speakers are a weak part of the cockpit avionics.

Is there a bit more aircraft vibration than in last year's video when cruising under power at 80+ mph? Might just be the camera mount a tiny bit looser, but compared to the NW Ohio flight at similar speed there are more motion blurs and artifacts. I noticed it because your videos are so characteristically smooth and high quality.

I'm interested! What's the average cruise speed, fuel burn, and range of your S12? (this is something only an owner would be honest about!) I love gliding and I love week long cross country flying adventures... I'm currently flying a Pipistrel Taurus but engine on speed is only 50 kt and meant for climb.
@ricklederman
@ricklederman Жыл бұрын
The S12 cruises at 110kts indicated, the same at 10,000 ft, burning 5 gallons an hour, 140 kts true I think at that altitude. It’s a great airplane. Send an email to [email protected] and I’ll give you lots of details
@ricklederman
@ricklederman Жыл бұрын
The Stemme S12 also has a 53:1 glide ratio. As I said in my other answer, 5 gph and 110 kts indicated is actual. My wife and I fly from KUSE to KMQJ to see grandkids, a 1:15 flight, all with engine running. I land with the engine running 90% of my flights. Landing is a piece of cake! It simply has no bad habits. During my initial training when I took delivery of s/n 12-012 I landed it with winds 18 kts gusting over 24 kts, with a DIRECT crosswind. It was simple. I recently took delivery of s/n 12-045, a dual Garmin G3X version, vs the Dynon/Garmin 660 in 12-012. Note, one of my videos, Clutch Failure. Stemme has this fixed now. [email protected]

Hello Rick, great video! question, why did you not set your stemme to soaring attitude after gliding distance to the airport was available? Is it better to rely on the faulty engine diminishing the glide ratio? thank you!
@ricklederman
@ricklederman 2 жыл бұрын
Juan, you are correct, after getting the throttle pulled back I should have turned my speed into altitude while I was making the turn back home. When the engine kept running I advanced the throttle slowly to see if the clutch would engage again. It did so I set it to 3,600 which is roughly zero sink. I also failed to slow to 60 kts for a better glide.

@ricklederman 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, it has been quite a few months since I've had lift like that day so I'm watching the video again. No trips like that planned. My software business pays for things like my S12 and I'm at the business every day. The S12 is so amazing, 53:1, but even better, roll into a 45 degree turn and the polyhedral wing requires NO opposite aileron for three or four turns! They got a LOT of things right with this one. After watching your breakfast video, can't do that there in a S12. My 82.5 foot wingspan would not fit. That is always a problem to consider!

I do like the Stemme concept. I could fly one on my SPL with self launch added. One thing puzzles me though (and Google doesn’t help!) can you land with the engine on? I think I heard the prop clearance isn’t enough so you need to shut down to land. Is that true?
@ricklederman
@ricklederman 2 жыл бұрын
The Stemme is amazing, the S12 has serious advantages over the S10. You are correct, you can fly one with your SPL but with a self launch added. Yes you can land with the engine running. Many S10 owners seldom or never land with the engine running. I land with my engine running 90% of the time and never have had trouble. The S12 landing gear is a little taller, and a little wider but having great landing technique helps. I've actually landed my S12 with a direct crosswind, 18 kts gusting to 24 kts and had no trouble.

Curious. I didn't understand why you chose to land back at the airport just after leaving it? Was there an issue?
@ricklederman
@ricklederman 2 жыл бұрын
No issue, just no lift. I planned from the beginning to make it a fairly short flight. Guessing there would be nobody at the R/C flying field for a flyby, and having no other place of interest to go to, and wanting to get a flight in, I made this one short. The takeoffs and landings are the challenge anyway. This one with its crosswind was especially rewarding.

Glad you enjoyed it! Winter has hit NW Ohio though. Since the Stemme doesn't have a cockpit heater I need a somewhat clear sky without a ton of wind to enjoy the flight. Good news is unfolding the wings and getting it ready to fly won't leave me dripping with sweat like a 90 degree day does. :)

Thanks Kevin. It was a short flight. Very little lift, and what was there was small and limited to maybe 2,500 ft high. But it was the first flight in 45 days or so, so it was about time. The landing was very interesting. The crosswind came more direct from the south, gusts to 17 knots. Notice how much left roll I had to hold just to stay in line with the runway. Makes for a confidence builder!
