Great video Tom! Is creating a new layer the only way to use sharpen AI selectively? Can you not invoke it from the original mask? No worries and thanks. Subscribed!
@TomCheswick
@TomCheswick 2 ай бұрын
Thank you for subscribing! I am not aware of a way to selectively use Tack Sharp AI without using a 2nd layer of the image. Hopefully someone will chime in if they know of a way. If you want to keep to just the original layer, you could try adding an Effects filter like Dynamic Contrast and mask that in. That does a very good job with sharpening.

Thanks for this video. You explained the new features in an easy to understand way. One question, why did you merge the photos instead of using the Stamped Layer option?
@TomCheswick
@TomCheswick 2 ай бұрын
Glad it was helpful! Great question! Either way will work. I merged the layers because I know I wasn't going to re-edit either layer and was only going to work on the newly merged layer. This practice dates back to my early days with photoshop and merging layers to save disk space. Old habits!

Thanks Tom. I downloaded this new version yesterday and uploads are pretty fast on the new unedited RAW files but some of on the previously edited files, the upload is not so fast. Some take 15-20 seconds on the Develop mode. The problem is 99% of my images are already edited.

I just noticed that too when opening some folders that I had images that I had worked on. It seems to be a problem when Browse module. When I open the images in Develop, I can quickly scroll through the images again. I went to Preferences > System and Empty Browse Cache and then it reloaded the folder and it is fast again.

This is an excellent tutorial. Can you also do a tutorial on how to make a mask smooth, not polygon like? I do product photography and I need hard, straight lines in some areas of my product image and then I need half-circle, round like lines in other areas of my product. Some programs are good at selecting straight or round lines, but some programs are not. I am not talking about feathering.
@TomCheswick
@TomCheswick 2 ай бұрын
Thank you! ON1 does have Line Mask tool (Shift P), though it doesn't let you adjust around curves like Photoshop's Pen tool. ON1 also gives you different options when Refining a selection. Instead of Hair/Branches, consider trying Hard Edges.

GREAT video!! I was able to follow along and was amazed at the results. Question ... is there a way to replace the preset with a different background!
@TomCheswick
@TomCheswick 2 ай бұрын
Thank you and I am happy that you were able to follow along! Yes, you can replace the preset. Once you select a new texture for the background, you can right-click on the preset and select Update Preset with Current Settings. Another option so that you don't overwrite the original preset, is once you change the background, go to Settings and select Save Settings as Preset. This will save it as a new preset.

@@TomCheswick is there a way to bring in a JPG background to replace the adaptive preset? The preset does a great job of removing background in the hair. But if I try to bring in a background on a layer, and use a refine brush, the results are terrible. I want to use the preset to prepare the image for a background of my choosing. Any ideas?
@TomCheswick

I import my backgrounds in the Textures filter under Effects. I then mask out my subject and then set the Mode to Replace and set the Opacity to 100. Hope this helps!

Can you use Reablum without Photoshop?
@TomCheswick
@TomCheswick 3 ай бұрын
Yes, you can use Reblum as a stand-alone program. Just like I showed when using it for a batch of images, you can use it for a single image too. No need for Photoshop or a program like ON1.
@RDJim
@RDJim 3 ай бұрын
@@TomCheswick I have On1 but was wondering if Reablum works as a stand alone plug-in for ON1? or just stand alone?
@TomCheswick
@TomCheswick 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the follow up question Jim, but I am not sure if I am understanding it. Stand alone programs and plugins are two separate types of programs. Stand alone means the program runs by itself and does not need a host program like photoshop or ON1. A plugin works within or is launched by a host program. Reblum can work either way. In the video, I used it as a plugin in ON1 when I was retouching individual images. ON1 launches Reblum and then Reblum automatically adds a new layer in ON1 with the retouching. Then I used Reblum as a Stand alone program when I did a group of photos to show the batch capabilities of Reblum. I hope this answer helps, but if not, let me know and I can try again.

Question for a future topic. I love ON1 as an editor, but I don't use the DAM because Sync 360 in a word, SUCKS. I've been using Mylio as a DAM and it works great for that, allowing me to sync all my devices and even pull down originals when needed. Do you happen to have a recommended workflow for this? I'd really like to have both apps pointing at the same set of photos.

Tom, thank you for another helpful video. I am curious though, is there any particular reason why you use the opacity setting under blending over expanding the opacity section within the local adjustment or effect to change opacity? From what I can tell they are linked and perform the same function.
@TomCheswick
@TomCheswick 4 ай бұрын
That is a great question Schuey! Your way is much better, it is quicker and easier then going into the properties panel's blending tab. Thanks for pointing that out. I do a lot of masking where I will need to change the blending mode from Normal to something like Overlay, Softlight or Color. I just got in to the habit of changing the Opacity there too. In the future, when I am just adjusting Opacity, I will use your way. Thank you!

How did you remove the grey line on der right arm? You didn't show that....
@TomCheswick
@TomCheswick 5 ай бұрын
Hey Carl, are you asking about the grey on the edge of her arm at 10:52 in the video? If so, the skin has a soft edge so there does appear to have a soft grey transition on the edge. Since I am replacing the background with a background that has a similar luminosity, the grey edge just goes away. It may show up if I was to make the new background white or black. I will have to make a more advanced masking tutorial on how to deal with halos or when the cutout isn't very clean. In the mean time, my best advice is if you know that you want to swap a background, select the background before the shoot. If it is really dark, shoot on a black or dark grey background. Be sure to have edge lights so there is good separation from you subject and background. If the new background is really light, shoot on a light grey background. And in this example, a medium grey background was the right choice. Hope this helps, but feel free to follow up if I didn't answer your question.

Oh also one can simply keep a folder of favorite backgrounds blurred ahead of time as basically one needs to do this all the time. Same thing can be done with skies using negative clarity.
