CRITERIA OF A BUDDHIST 1:16:59 - “When, Mahānāma, one has gone for REFUGE to the Buddha, the Dhamma, and the Saṅgha…” The word REFUGE I think speaks to me clearly regarding the Buddha and the Dhamma. I feel no aversion. But I get aversive when it comes to the idea of taking REFUGE in the Sangha… as a lay person? Maybe I don’t fully understand REFUGE in the Sangha? The how and the why? Maybe some concrete examples would help… examples of what taking such REFUGE in the Sangha would look like for a lay person? Or maybe I fully understand what such Sangha REFUGE means… Maybe taking REFUGE via the help/support of others in the Sangha just cuts against my (western) embrace of individualism/independence. (Therefore aversion.) I sense that it is really important for westerners to have a deeper/detailed understanding of the potential ACTIONS and BENEFITS involved in taking REFUGE in the Sangha as a lay person. I sense REFUGE is a under-examined word? I also know that REFUGE is so needed… BELIEF in the Sangha seems much easier than taking REFUGE in the Sangha. Believing in general seems much easier (too easy) than ‘refuging’… Namo Buddhaya

No one is Ugly or Beautiful by their appearance. These all wordings are "sañña"(perception), made by people. The individual is compounded of five factors that are constantly changing. Anattā. One is beautiful by their actions, good deeds, virtue. Even who don't have virtue, can develop it and become a good human being. As a Buddhist we should not give tags/label like this. Wordings are used just for conventional purpose.
