Unfortunately the caver who carved Neil's name on the rock was a skilled stonemason, but not too hot on spelling. The thought was there though.

Thank's David that was a very informative film, I had my first trip around these mines in the late 60s early 70s and went back in 2019 so much has changed on the surface lots of trees and vegetation nowadays It's still a fascinating place to go underground here.

Thanks for your comments Keith. The mines in the 60's and 70's were much more accessible than they are today due to safety regulations, but access is still possibe thanks to a few dedicated and knowledgeable guides. John (Barnatt) and Len did a great job as guides in the film, bringing the history and importance of the mines to light.

Thanks David, I'd not seen this video before. Incidentally, a small sample was taken from one of the large diameter holes, as well as the small 3/4 inch shotholes. Also a control sample from the general area was taken & all were later analysed by SEM for minute traces of blast residue. Unfortunately the results were inconclusive but if anyone else would like to try a different technique, I still have the samples sealed in glass vials. Its certainly a fascinating place & one perhaps worthy of more study. Best wishes Nigel

An excellent documentary on the background for the film, Dave, I really enjoyed watching that. Doug was a man of many parts, as you probably know, in addition to his caving exploits. I remember one evening, after a good caving session with Keith Joule in Stoney Middleton, we met up with John and Doug in the Miners, and Doug spent the best part of an hour describing his wartime exploits, organising what might be euphamistically termed "ambulance logistics" in Italy - that would have made a book in its own right.

Such an insane story. We visited her for the first time this year, taken by the parents in law (I'd never heard of it). I get quite claustrophobic occasionally so was pretty wary of going in, especially with a baby and a 5 year old. Luckily, the tour guide was outstanding, and my love of history (and my knees holding up for the low ceiling part) kept me going right until the end. It was such an amazing place. Once everyone had gone (we stayed to give the kids some food) I asked the tour guide if people ever got lost or trapped.... He said "yeah, there's still one in there now, poor lad". I looked it up as soon as I was home. Literally my worst fear (apart from drowning) and wondered why anyone would ever go so deep. And how couldn't they get him out? (In my head out was all fairly open just steep and maybe the occasional hole....I ended up watching a ton of videos of people going that route....I couldn't believe the amount of pin hole sized access and contortion inducing terrain they had to navigate. It made me physically anxious but I couldn't stop watching. Such an amazingly tragic story. Hopefully one day your documentary might be uploaded as no where seems to have it stocked. I don't know why it still intreagues me so much. Thank you!

Peter, Thanks for your interesting comments - it certainly is a tragic story; Neil was a victim of circumstance in some ways, the ladder rung spacing and his long legs, the ladder trapped below him, the rotten rope and so on.
