A standard Sportster is still a great bike. Harley has made the new ones cheap and nasty instead. You need to take a lot of stuff off to replace one part. And buy some blue Loctite.

Im a beginner. 1. How do you “chase” a wheelie? 2. When are you changing gears? 3. Is that why your reving the throttle intermittently?
@JoelTarquin21
@JoelTarquin21 Жыл бұрын
Hi Isabel, When I say “chasing a wheelie”, that is basically a speed wheelie, vs a balance wheelie. By speed wheelie, I mean that once the front wheel is off the ground, only the power of the motorcycle is keeping the front wheel up, and that power will soon run out. I change gears while still in the middle of my RPM range because thats where the torque is. If you over rev, you will not have the torque to keep popping the wheel up, thus chasing the wheelie until the wheel touches down. By shifting early, I have enough torque left in each gear to be able to keep lifting the front tire higher up into more of a balance wheelie. The longer you can keep the front wheel high, the longer you can ride the wheelie. The intermittent throttle reving is a balancing game, trying to give enough throttle to keep the front wheel high and not let it drop vs getting too high and looping out. Hope that helps…

That is a 1200. I always use two into one pipes, as they create better low end, and sound bitchin. That bike also has stage one air cleaner/carb tuning.

Hey Joe, I know it's been years since you put out the Sportster build series but, I wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed it. Some of the numbers may have changed since then but, the tech info still stands. A great job for the budget you set, it's very easy to spend much more. BTW - your wheelies truly do make you Rad 👍

I realize this video is 6 years old but, I hope you are happy, health & still ripping a Harley around like you're 20

Man that’s awesome! I’d be happy with just being able to get the front end off the ground. But I’ve been riding about 4 months. I’ll be 52 this Christmas, which is a week away. I just got an iron 883, in oct., 2020, my first actual motorcycle, kind of a present from my wife! Not a bad present I might add! Funnest thing I think I’ve ever done in my life is to start riding! I wish I would have started a long time ago!

Where ever you live the laws there must be very “friendly “ to motorcycles? No turn signals, no mirrors, no front fender, no Speedo! None of that will fly in Oklahoma! Even a front fender is required by Oklahoma law!? Talk about your overkill. We do not have to wear helmets though! We also must have a daytime running headlight to be street legal.
@JoelTarquin21
@JoelTarquin21 3 жыл бұрын
Actually our laws require most of those things as well. Cops around here don't typically pull someone over for those infractions, but if I got caught riding a wheelie or something, they would drill me for all those things. I saw you comment on another one of my videos about my Evel Kneivel toy, if you haven't seen it yet, you might get a kick out of my Evel Kneivel tribute video. You should be able to find it on my KZfaq page. Glad that you are finally riding. Be safe out there...

Hey Joe, I just sold my Triumph Scrammy and looking to do a similar tracker Sportster build. There's no shortage of cheap Sportsters where I live. Would you recommend an 883 or 1200? Also would you do pre rubber mount sporty or post? Thanks man! Old guys do willies too! Lol.
@JoelTarquin21

Hey Man, I would only do a 1200, as they say “There is no replacement for displacement.” And a 1200 is a really fun bike. I had been told to go solid mount for a race bike, but I don’t know how much that really matters. Enjoy...

My first Harley was a 1977 XLCH Sportster. I ordered it while I was stationed in Japan in 1976 and picked it up when I got home. I rode it down to my new duty station in Georgia, and through a friend got to run it on a dirt track, totally stock, no modifications at all. It was the most fun you could have on a motorcycle at the time. I'm down the street in San Diego and my FXDWG would be a little big for the track, but it would be so cool to do what you are doing. Keep us posted, maybe we locals can come out to see you race.

Have you ever flipped the bike on a wheelie? How do you prevent giving it too much to quick so you don't flip?
@JoelTarquin21
@JoelTarquin21 4 жыл бұрын
I haven’t flipped a bike since my 1986 YZ 125. I ALWAYS keep my foot on the rear brake. As for giving too much gas, a Harley is pretty hard to flip backwards unless you are trying to drag your fender. Good luck...

It was an “on a budget” build, and Baja Designs is a long time sponsor, I needed a place to put a number, and that was free. I agree that it does not have a dirt track look, but it was street legal AND race legal, so it fit the budget and the need.
