Pavarotti. Period. Dead stop. End of discussion. Anyone who says differently isn't someone whose opinion I am interested in.

Angela Lansbury is the most surprising. We all know what a hell of a performer she was but she really came through for Gypsy. She didn’t play Rose as the monster most actresses do. Especially in Rose’s Turn (Patti LuPone!). I actually felt very sorry for Lansbury’s Rose. Especially with the bows to an imaginary audience. However, we must be honest. This was Merman’s role. Sondheim said, and I’m paraphrasing, that Ethel really wasn’t an actress and struggled with the “mo… moma” stutter. Say what you want about her acting but she did an outstanding job in 1959 before the heightened emotions started to creep in. When it comes to recent productions, Imelda Staunton practically reinvented the role and received a well deserved Olivier Award for her triumphant performance. Patti LuPone didn’t do it for me at all. I fully respect Miss LuPone’s talent! However, she started out manic and then left herself no where to go. I understand it must have been a very powerful experience in the theatre but in hindsight it was an overrated production.

Jennifer Holiday gave the iconic performance by which everyone else has to try to measure themselves against. Shootout to the American Idol contestant who was able to sing with Jennifer Holiday at the finale and not get blown away songing next to JH. Great job! I voted for u to win it ALL. What happened to her? Many great person...❤

Edit: Seems like the Jennifer's can sing this song! JHol, JHud, JSan!!! Nicole Scherzinger and her Pacific Islander sisters sounded excellent as well. Singers should never smoke. I've seen many singers ruin their voices quickly including Whitney Houston by smoking. Please learn to meditate!

Neither of them made the Grade..... They just couldn't hit the main marks....And you know what I referring to . They just couldn't STICK the triplets,....so sad. They all just went their way......Waaaaaaaaay off the song. They added their own bits and pieces and fillers to the song......They all were just TERRIBLE. Instead of just relaxing and let the music come to them.....they rushed it and was so anxious to hit the main marks.....they blew it. And I bet you that all of their family and friends and people at the show......LIED TO THEM SAYING THEY DID VERY WELL......

Some very impressive skills among them all, but Lucia Popp and Cristina Deuketom moved something in my chest with their blending of expressiveness and technical skill. Some of the voices sounded strained, theirs seemed effortless.

I liked Maria Callas' version very much, also. When I hear her deliver that impossible staccato, it seems to me her throat is relaxed. It seems to me she took her time with it. If that's possible.

Credit to all of them for their singing, but the one who really inhabits the role - and sings it well - is Natalie Dessay, who doesn't figure here but can be found elsewhere on KZfaq. Most of these singers look like women making doll-like gestures ; Dessay is astonishing in her acting as well as her singing, and with her impersonation of a doll comes a pathos that none of these singers achieves.

One of my favorite albums of all time! Excellent engineering - can't believe it was done on 8-trks. Alan Spenner's playing on this record is the reason why I learned to play bass!
