I've only sailed in Poole Harbour once- at an Osprey open back in the 1980s. Can't remember much about it but I think we were hosted by Poole Yacht Club. I can't even remember where we launched and recovered from but it can't have been anywhere tricky as I used to use a foxed rudder in those days so would have been sailing in and out rudderless.

Lovely trip down the Loch. Do you remember what the wind was getting up to when you started to lean out at about 31m? Would give me an idea of conditions you would expect. The waves can really build with that SW wind cant they!?
@sailingskismo
@sailingskismo 8 күн бұрын
Thanks Dave, the wind on that morning (31minutes in) was about 15-16 kts and the gusts forecast were considerably higher (25 kts) Both days on Loch Ness were quite windy with a minimum of F4G6 forecast. I dare say that had the forecast have been more in the F3 range then it would have been more of an 'explore' than a 'ride'! Remember it is 20NM long so if averaging 3Kts in a straight line it would take you 7 hours to complete with the wind behind you. And yes, on the first day, the wave height in the late afternoon was 'challenging', that's why we took refuge in the harbour before they got that big. The winds in the mid-late afternoon on the first day were F6 - we didn't fancy being in that! Thanks for watching, much appreciated.

@@sailingskismo Many thanks for that reply. I sail a Lugger so she's well suited to the "stronger" winds, but i'm very midful of waves!! Seems in a F4/F5 things don't get too crazy then. The fetch on that loch is considerable though.

Thats a lovley trip for a dinghy. Cheers for the video and inspiration. I'm currenlty trying to come up with Tent MK2 for my Lugger and will take a little bit of inspiration from this! One quick question. Can you right the GP14 with all that kit in or do you intend on never capsizing?
@sailingskismo
@sailingskismo 12 күн бұрын
@@SailingWithDave Thanks Dave, well, like yours, I have built-in buoyancy tanks down each side of the boat and that keeps the boat mostly out of the water if I’m on my side. The dry bags of sleeping stuff and clothes offer a bit of buoyancy too. That said, all that extra gear in the bottom of the boat also offers a bit more stability. I’ve never capsized with all that gear in but I’m more than confident that if I did I would be able to right it. It’s been 3 years since I last capsized and I had a fair amount of gear in the boat then and I ended up doing a dry capsize ( in front of King Harry Ferry in Falmouth! ) I did lose my paper chart and my favourite sandwich box.

We're looking at setting up two Wayfarers for a trip to Scotland next year. We're starting to plan early so we can budget, for space in diaries and gather boats an kit. Your seamanship skills and wind awareness are top notch The videos are a joy to watch and a lot if thought has gone into the edit of the clips which keep the viewer engaged.I am a Wayfarer sailor but now becoming fond of the GP 14 and it's capabilities. Personally I would get rid of some of the gear in the boat to enable more efficient boat performance and less faff finding,sorting which takes time. Just my view,easy to say though.However watching you on the boat you seem to be be very organised. Waiting for the next vid. Liked and subscribed 🙂🙂

Finally getting round to set up something similar on my GP14 - how do you attach cleats, fairleads to the boom and the mast? I'm debating between rivets and tapping. Another question, is there any benefit using a cam cleat instead of clamcleat for the reefing line?
@sailingskismo
@sailingskismo Ай бұрын
Hi, I use rivets to attach things to the boom, primarily because it is a quick way to do so. Also, the rivets are the same metal as the boom so less risk of galvanic corrosion. Nothing wrong with tapping and using threadlock but do use marine grade screws otherwise they will rust and weaken. As far as cleats go: I prefer cam cleats on warps under a lot of strain, I’ve used clam cleats in the past and they have failed to hold in heavy conditions. That may have been down to how I had the warp running into them or maybe a slight mismatch of size. If I ever get around to it, I will run my reef lines inside the boom to tidy it all up a bit.
