Thanks for the "funny" stories about your experiences with Icelandic. Forgive the personal question but I'm confused - feel free to not answer if you don't want to or if you feel that it is "none of my business". Somewhere in the middle of the video [the "blue cheese" story"], you said something like "my boyfriend, when we were still friends". However, at the end, in explaining the "Hope Moon" art, you simply referred to him as your boyfriend. Again, if this is not my business etc, just ignore the question. If you want another funny language story... a friend of my father's was travelling through the province of Quebec, where they speak french. My father's friend was in a restaurant and wanted some milk. Alas, he couldn't recall the french word for "milk" ("lait"). On the spot, the best he could do was to make up a descriptive phrase for "milk": "eau de vache" ("water of cow"). That is sort of correct but and may have been understood, but I'm sure that it got puzzled looks from the restaurant staff!
@LoppyLoves
@LoppyLoves 4 күн бұрын
Haha the 'eau de vache' sounds like some of the descriptions I come up with when I can't remember the word 😂 For clarification the blue cheese story happened before our relationship started, hence back 'when we were still friends'. He is now my boyfriend and has been for a few years, the hope moon art was bought last year

I find it interesting that there is an Icelandic language exam. You say that it is "used in the citizenship application" - what other aspects are there for the whole citizenship application? Knowledge of Icelandic history, culture, laws etc?
@LoppyLoves
@LoppyLoves 12 күн бұрын
The rest of the requirements are just personal documents such as criminal record checks, proof of income etc There are no other exams about culture or history, just the language exam 🙂

We plan to move to Iceland after retirement. Do you Know what the minimum cost of living is in iceland (with a car, insurances etc) for 1 person?
@LoppyLoves
@LoppyLoves 12 күн бұрын
I've never had a car myself so I can't help with the costs including car and and insurance unfortunately. According to the national registry you will need a minimum income of 239.895 ISK a month to live in Iceland, although that sounds a bit low to me! I'd say realistically you'd want to have at least 300-350.000 ISK per month, but it all depends on weather you'll be renting, buying a home with a mortgage, or buying a home outright. Hope that helps! Good luck with your move 🙂

Hmmm. I thought that I had commented on this video the other day but I don't see it there. Thanks for another fun walk around Selfoss. Such a lovely town. I wanted to ask what are the structures that I can see on Google Maps' satellite view on the southeast side of town. They appear to be a large number of multi-unit houses (2-5 dwellings per building.)
@LoppyLoves
@LoppyLoves 16 күн бұрын
I think you also commented on my other Selfoss walking tour video so that might be why you don't see it on this video 🙂 Are the buildings in the video? If so could you tell me what time they appear in the video please so I can see what the buildings are. They are most likely apartment blocks
@timpointing
@timpointing 15 күн бұрын
@@LoppyLoves Alas, the buildings would have possibly shown up just after your jump cut around the horse farm (they are immediately south of the horse farm.) You are likely correct that they are likely apartment blocks - I am just not familiar with this sort of layout for apartments (I'm more familiar with the multi-floor style of apartments.) There is a large number (>100) buildings, each seems to contain 2-5 units. Apartment buildings makes sense - I had been wondering it might be some sort of camping/vacation housing or something like that.

Of course we were still with you when you were walking along the north side of the Ölfusá, before you headed into that lovely "Cave Forest" sanctuary! (How could you possibly think that we might abandon you 😉?!?!) How lucky you are to have something like that less than a half-hour walk from your home. Thank you so much for taking us along on your walk. Again, like during your drive to Reykjavik, I felt I was there with you, though walking with you this time, rather than in the car. For most of the route, I was able to "follow" along on Google Maps, although I got turned around a bit - just where you were trying to re-find the path in the Sanctuary. 😄😊 You started by indicating that you were starting your walk before 7 o'clock - how busy (with pedestrians) would some of those places be later, like mid-morning or early afternoon? Thank you Lauren for taking us on a walking tour of Selfoss on what looked to be a lovely sunny, windy and I suspect cool early morning. It's nice to get an idea of the area and how much bigger it is than I first thought. It's nice to see all the different types of buildings and styles of houses and the flora and fauna too. Again the backdrop of mountains and the picnic benches by the water, although looked a bit too windy and may be cold to sit there that day but am sure it would be no doubt a good spot to watch the world go by. That was interesting to know that the rabbits were originally domesticated and not wild like here and I take it that somehow they have acclimatised to the environment and climate as time has gone on? What is the new road and bridge being built for? Just curious.
@LoppyLoves
@LoppyLoves 21 күн бұрын
There is also more of the town that I haven't filmed yet, Selfoss is growing very quickly! The temperature was quite mild, I had my coat on as it had been cold the day before but I was getting a bit to warm in it. Yes the rabbits seem to have settled to the climate and this isn't the only place in Iceland where the rabbits live, there's also an area in Reykjavík with many rabbits. There's a project to try to reduce the numbers over the last few years, some of the rabbits have been caught and put up for adoption. The new bridge is to try to ease the flow of traffic through Selfoss. Tthe current bridge and the main street running through Selfoss are part of the ring road so we can get a lot of traffic in the Summer. Thanks for watching! 🙂

I love the current exchange rate between the Iceland Krona and the Canadian Dollar, because 1 kr is pretty much one Canadian cent (0.01 dollar), making it trivial to convert your food prices to CAD. It's like a metric conversion! That said, I'm finding the Iceland prices that you are quoting rather high (or maybe it is just that Canada/US prices are low relative to much of the world.) $9 for a small fries (even if that is a generous helping for "small") is quite a lot. That said, I understand that Iceland must import many food items, which would go a long way to explain the prices. I also found it peculiar that the beef soup option was less than the chicken option - the reverse to what I would expect here. Just FYI, for Reykjavik Chips, according to the online menu anyway, the sauces are extra (200 kr) Also, thanks again for another look at life in Iceland.
@LoppyLoves
@LoppyLoves 24 күн бұрын
Yes we have a lot of things imported to Iceland, the cost of living is very high here, and we pay high taxes which all contribute to the prices. It is an expensive country! I just checked the Reykjavík chips website and you are correct! This video was made almost 2 years ago so a lot of the prices are probably now inaccurate, I'm planning to make an updated video this Summer 😊
@timpointing
@timpointing 24 күн бұрын
@LoppyLoves Actially, for Reykjavik Fries, at least, your price from the video are still accurate - perhaps the sauces are now extra to compensate for their rising costs but without increasing the prices on their menu. I'll have to check with our local Subway to gauge the Icelandic prices, as I would think that the offerings would at least be comparable.

The music you put to it is so relaxing and I almost feel I am in the car looking out of the window too! Just a question about filming people being illegal in Iceland, how would say a tourist/visitor fare if they were for example filming or photographing a landmark or say the streets for their memories, a travel log of their time in Iceland? As people will no doubt be around or maybe walk into you filming inadvertently, or just happen to be there at the point of your filming. How does this work? Thanks.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the video Susan, thanks for watching 😊 I think the most likely outcome is that nothing would happen, there are many videos I've seen on KZfaq of tourists filming in Iceland and catching people in the background. If a local thought you were filming them and felt uncomfortable they might tell you off. But if you were unlucky and caught someone on film who then found the video online and really wanted to pursue it, then they would be within their right to sue you which could end up being very expensive!

I've been trying to get someone who moved here without EU citizenship to interview on this channel but it's quite difficult to find someone willing to share their story on KZfaq unfortunately! As far as I'm aware the 3 main avenues you can use to move here are; having a special education and experience in a field that's needed here, studying at a university here, or marrying an Icelander. There may be other ways to move here that I'm not aware of. There are a couple of KZfaq channels run by Americans who live in Iceland who may be able to help you. 'All things Iceland' and 'Iceland with a View' are the names of the channels. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful! I hope you get the information you need and have the chance to move here ❤️
