A cat has no idea what a mirror is, all they know is that their opponent is matching every gesture, move, and attack.

I cannot touch the cat on the other side but I do not know why. If I go behind the mirror, the other cat has gone. Meow! Why is this?

I've had multiple cats react to something they saw me do in a mirror and turn to look at where I actually was (I don't think it was based on sound I made because when I noticed this I tested a couple of times by just moving string around quietly to be reflected)

Why don't cats act this way when seeing their reflection in windows or water?

How can a human learn to tell the difference between a cat that hasn't figured out the mirror test, versus a cat that _has_ figured out the mirror test and thinks that their reflection is fun to play with?

I tried this years ago with a cat I had at the time. It was a smaller mirror and he was a few years old, not a kitten. He just sat and looked at his reflection for a while; then he went behind the mirror, saw that there was nothing there and, after that, he just wasn't interested in it at all, completely ignored it.

The interesting thing is, while most cats fail the mirror test (some actually figure it out right away), its actually an unfair test. Cats don't actually see detail very well, especially close up. Cats are far sighted, so they don't see 'themselves' in a mirror, they see a cat shaped thing that doesn't make noise and has no scent. That freaks them out. The mirror test is not a fair test because it doesn't take into consideration how an animal identifies itself. Cats identify things by scent first and by sight second. Cats rub their own scent all over their territory, friendly creatures IN their territory and identify things including themselves mainly by smell. It also doesn't help that there are only something like 400 or so coat patterns a cat can have. Imagine if all human's had one of 400 faces and there was no diversity further than that...that would suck for recognizing people since everyone would have like 8 million doppelgangers. Humans probably wouldn't use sight as a primary for of identification either.

The kitten just intelligent enough to recognize that the other kitten doesn't exist on the other side of the mirror itself, but isn't clever enough to piece together that the other kitten is merely a reflection of itself, so it has to assume the other kitten is in some form a real entity.

I remembered from the time we adopted my dog Sushi he barked at his own reflection on the piano and when I hold him in my arms in front of the mirror he was squirming and try to bark at the mirror and I almost dropped him cuz of that

My cats weren't interested in mirrors but when he was a kitten one of them loved to attack the mouse pointer as it moved across the screen on my computer.

Neither of my cats are interested in mirrors at all, it's like they know it's them but just don't care to look at themselves.

I think the best parts are when she's poised to go to ground, then gets confused when the opponent doesn't pounce.
