The way the seat tumbles after the first rocket burns out seems alarming, but nothing seemed to get tangled. The 'pilot' mentions a gun firing (probably the drogue gun intended to both stabilise the seat when falling from altitude, and to start extraction of the parachute (guessing, it's how the Martin-Baker seats with which I am more familiar work), which phase seems to go by very quickly in the zero-zero ejection, this drogue gun may defeat the possible tangling by launching the parachute drogue as far away as possible. Good design work.

At the end the narrator says the only man-rated zero-zero ejection seat in the world, or in the US? The automatically-deploying (and inflating) seat pack dinghy is interesting, while the Martin-Baker seats had seat-pack survival packs (it looked like a briefcase on the ones I am familiar with), did it inflate in contact with water?

IMO I think the Martin-Baker seats are superior to any American ejection-seat design.

Best video ever! I love the bit @00:15 about not remembering how to access the bulbs. That happens to all of us, old guy, esp those who are busy maintaining several cars! Two points: 1) Good of you to note that one doesn't need to remove the trunk trim. 2) Know that many of these Mazda tail light assemblies doesn't just "come right off." There are a couple of pins that require you remove the tail light assembly by pulling it out sideways rather than straight back. So, to do this for the right side assembly as shown, remove the two screws (@01:18) and then, with the butt of your left hand, knock the assembly out to the right. It should pop right off.

"Old guy"! I resemble that remark! OK, so I bought that car about 20 years ago when I was 50 but I still like pretty young girls (in their 40's) and rock n' roll (on the oldies station). Hummm, maybe you're right, but the voice in the video is an artificial text to speech voice LOL.

In 1983 I went to work for Webber aircraft in the R&D shop. I was about 26 years old. Great bunch of old men who showed me photos of all the guys from the right stuff. Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin etc. I told these old gentlemen that they were my heroes and they told me to shut up kid. I loved that coming from these fellas. In the back of the shop there was an old Gemini prototype seat just sitting there on the floor. And yes I remember actually sitting in it. These old guys told me about the trailers outside of the shop which held the astronauts for overnight fittings of their personal seats. Three of these guys I will never forget, Don and Ernie and fella named David j David. One of the stories from the R&D shop was that one of the guys out in the storage yard decided to pull the pin on a live ejection seat. It was found a mile and a half away in a liquor store parking lot. I found out later that the guy who pulled the pin turned into the current manager of the R&D shop. Can't remember his name but I remember him going home one day with that prototype Gemini seat.

Very cool..was just talking with my 74 year old Uncle last week. He worked for Weber on their ejection seats for the Gemini program. I am a former F-14 Martin-Baker seat specialist so we were comparing notes on the huge differences between both of them.

I had only seen a little of this before. Thanks for posting! At the time, Weber was located in Burbank and these tests were performed at Hansen Dam recreational area. I was an escape systems design and test engineer with McDonnell-Douglas in the late 80s-early 90s and attended several conferences where I met Jim Hall and a few others in that film.
